First check how much space is free on the exact drive or console storage where the game will be installed. Then use the platform’s built-in cleanup tools, move files or games you want to keep, and delete only data you recognize. Windows and Steam steps do not apply to every console; the instructions below cover Windows 10/11, Steam, and PS5.
Check the actual install destination first
On Windows, open This PC in File Explorer and check the available space for each connected drive. Make sure you are looking at the drive selected in the game launcher, not just the drive where Windows is installed. If the launcher lets you choose another drive with enough room, using it may avoid deleting anything.
On a console, check the console’s storage screen and distinguish internal storage from any expansion drive or USB storage. Also pause or finish other large installs and downloads so they are not competing for space.
There is no universal free-space buffer that applies to every game. Download size, installation, updates, and platform storage reservations vary, so use the space requirement shown by the game or platform rather than assuming a fixed amount of extra room.

Free space safely on Windows 10 and 11
Review Cleanup recommendations
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Open Cleanup recommendations and review the categories, selected files, and estimated space savings.
- Select only items you recognize and are comfortable removing, then confirm the cleanup.
Recommendations can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Check what is selected rather than treating the estimated savings as a promise; the amount is specific to your device. Microsoft’s [Windows storage cleanup guide] describes these options.
Use Storage Sense with care
In Settings > System > Storage, Storage Sense can automatically remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Its default settings do not clear Downloads or cloud files, but review its configuration before enabling or changing automation. Microsoft explains Storage Sense in its Storage Sense support guide.

If you are considering deleting Previous Windows Installation(s) in cleanup options, note that doing so removes the ability to roll back to the previous Windows version.
Move personal files instead of deleting them
In File Explorer, check large personal folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads. Sort by size, then move files you want to keep to another internal drive or an external drive. You can also set another drive as the destination for future downloads or game installs, where the app allows it.

If you delete files, empty the Recycle Bin to reclaim their space. Avoid manually removing unfamiliar Windows folders or game files outside the launcher; deleting the wrong files can break Windows or a game installation.
Move or remove an existing Steam game
If an installed game is taking up most of the space, moving it to another Steam library can preserve the installation. Steam recommends backing up the steamapps folder before moving game files. Follow Steam’s supported process in its guide to moving a Steam installation and games, rather than dragging folders around manually.

Before uninstalling or moving a game, check how its saves are stored. Steam Cloud does not cover every title or every third-party save location, so copy or back up saves you cannot afford to lose before removing the installation.
Free space on PS5 without confusing game data and saves
Delete or trim installed games and apps
- Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select the game or app you want to remove.
- Where a title offers Customize, use it to remove optional portions you do not need; not every game provides this option.
- Confirm only the content you intend to delete.
Installed game files and saved data are handled separately. Use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings to manage saves. PlayStation describes PS Plus cloud uploads and copying PS4 save data to USB in its PS5 storage management guide. Check the save’s status and backup options before deleting related data.

PS5 M.2 expansion requirements
For PS5 M.2 expansion, Sony specifies a PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe SSD with an M.2 Key M interface and a capacity of 250 GB to 8 TB. Supported form factors are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110; the drive can be up to 25 mm wide, subject to Sony’s listed length and thickness limits. Sony recommends sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s and effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. M.2 SATA is not supported. Check the complete drive and heatsink dimensions, and note that meeting the specifications does not guarantee compatibility with every third-party device.
Unlike USB extended storage, compatible M.2 storage can hold PS5 games for downloading, updating, and direct play. PS5 games moved to USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage or M.2 before they can be played.
