Open Xbox’s storage-management area to see what is using space, then uninstall a game or other content you no longer need right now. If you remove a game, Xbox Support also provides guidance for uninstalling and reinstalling games. For a recurring shortage on Xbox Series X|S, consider a compatible storage expansion card.
Start by checking what is using storage
Use the console’s storage-management area to review installed games and content, and decide what can be removed. Xbox Support’s Manage storage page is the official reference for this task. Menu labels can change, so follow the wording shown on your console rather than relying on an outdated button-by-button path.
Uninstall something you can do without for now
If a game is not needed at the moment, uninstalling it is a straightforward way to make room for another installation. Xbox Support maintains instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling a game. Check the console’s current prompts before confirming removal.
Removing an installed game is not the same as giving up access to it permanently: use the official reinstall guidance to check how to install it again. The page is titled for Microsoft Casual Games, so consult it alongside your console’s own library and prompts for the game you are managing.

Consider an expansion card if the problem keeps coming back
For Xbox Series X|S owners who regularly run short of room, a compatible storage expansion card is a hardware option. Xbox Support explains the category in its guide to using a storage expansion card with Xbox Series X|S. Check that a card is compatible with your console and compare current capacity, price, and availability before buying; no particular model or price is established here.
Check compatibility before choosing a USB drive
Do not assume that any external USB drive can run every Xbox Series X|S-optimized game. The rules for storing and playing games can depend on the drive and game, and the available official details do not establish those requirements. Verify current Xbox compatibility guidance before choosing a USB drive or moving games to one.
