The right fix depends on whether you’re using a Windows PC, PS5, or Nintendo Switch: a drive that can hold a game does not always let you play it from that drive.
First, check which device and storage location are full
Use the built-in storage screen before deleting anything. It shows where space is being used and helps you avoid removing files blindly.
- Windows 10 or 11: Open File Explorer and select This PC to see available space on each drive. For cleanup options, go to Settings > System > Storage and review Cleanup recommendations.
- PS5: Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Nintendo Switch family: Open System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software.
The menus and what they can do differ by platform; follow the relevant path rather than assuming a generic external drive will work the same way everywhere. Microsoft’s Windows storage guide, Sony’s PS5 storage instructions and Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ describe the platform-specific options.
Free space on Windows 10 or 11
Review cleanup suggestions
In Settings > System > Storage, open Cleanup recommendations. Windows can surface temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files and unused apps. Review the items and the displayed potential space savings before choosing what to remove; a suggested item is not automatically something you should delete.

Storage Sense can also clear temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Check its settings and the items selected for removal so you know what will be deleted. Emptying the Recycle Bin matters if you already deleted files: until it is emptied, those files may still occupy drive space.
Sort personal files by size, and move what you want to keep
Videos, Music, Pictures and Downloads are common places to find large personal files. Open those folders in File Explorer and sort by size. Delete only files you recognize and no longer want; move wanted files to another drive or external storage instead. Microsoft’s guide to freeing up drive space covers these cleanup options.

Free space on PS5
Remove a title or selected game data
In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, review installed titles and their space use. Delete a game or data only if you’re ready to remove it from that storage location. For games that offer Customize, Sony says you may be able to remove particular add-ons or completed portions while keeping the rest of the game. Check the options for the selected title rather than assuming every game supports partial removal.

Know whether an external drive lets you play the game
PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to PS5 console storage before you can play them. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. An installed M.2 SSD can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games, making it a different option from USB storage when you want games to remain playable from added storage. Check Sony’s PS5 storage and M.2 SSD support information for device requirements and compatibility.

Archive an unplayed download to keep its save data
In System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software, choose a downloaded game you are willing to remove from the console. Nintendo’s archive option deletes the downloaded software while preserving its save data and HOME Menu icon. Select that icon later to redownload the software. This is useful when you need room now but may want to play the game again.

Nintendo also offers a delete option, so check which action you are choosing. Its instructions explain how to archive or delete downloadable software without impacting save data.
Use supported storage for downloads
A microSD card can hold downloadable software on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo says external USB hard drives are not currently supported for Switch data management, so a USB drive is not a substitute for a microSD card. Consult Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ for the platform’s storage details.

Choose extra storage based on where you need to play
External storage is not a universal solution. The key distinction is whether it merely gives you somewhere to offload a game or lets you launch it from the added storage.

How much free space does the download need?
There is no universal spare-space buffer established for large game downloads in the platform support guidance here. Game and system requirements vary, so use the current game-store listing and the space requirement or prompt shown by your device. Don’t rely on a fixed percentage or assume the listed game size is the only space the installation needs.
If the built-in cleanup does not free enough room, choose additional storage that is supported by your platform and suits how you want to play. For hardware compatibility, check the current requirements for your exact device before buying.
