1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn an ESRB label, content descriptors flag material that may have contributed to a game’s rating or may matter to consumers. They work alongside—not instead of—the age-based rating category. For a better sense of what appears and how it is presented, check the rating summary when one is available.
What do video game content descriptors mean?
This guide covers the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) system, which is most directly relevant to games carrying ESRB information, including US-facing listings. Descriptors are content signals, not a complete inventory of everything in a game. ESRB says they are applied relative to the assigned rating category and are not intended to list all content. ESRB’s Ratings Guide provides the definitions.
Read three pieces of information together: the age category, the descriptors, and—if available—the rating summary. The category suggests age appropriateness; descriptors call out content; the summary can give more detail about its context. ESRB’s rating process considers context as well as content, including reward systems and player control, so the label is not simply a count of scenes. ESRB explains its rating process, which differs for physically distributed games and digitally available games.
What do the violence descriptors mean?
| Descriptor | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Violence | Scenes involving aggressive conflict; may include bloodless dismemberment. (ESRB Ratings Guide) |
| Fantasy Violence | Violent actions of a fantasy nature involving human or non-human characters in situations easily distinguished from real life. (ESRB Ratings Guide) |
| Intense Violence | Graphic, realistic-looking physical conflict. It may involve extreme or realistic blood, gore, weapons, and depictions of human injury and death. (ESRB Ratings Guide) |
The clearest distinction is how the conflict is presented. Fantasy Violence is explicitly fantastical and distinguishable from real life; Intense Violence describes graphic, realistic-looking conflict. These terms are not a universal severity ladder: ESRB applies descriptors relative to the game’s rating category, and the descriptors alone do not tell you how often a scene occurs or provide its full context.

What is the difference between Drug Reference and Use of Drugs?
| Descriptor | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Drug Reference | Reference to or images of illegal drugs. (ESRB Ratings Guide) |
| Use of Drugs | Consumption or use of illegal drugs. (ESRB Ratings Guide) |
The distinction is reference or imagery versus depicted consumption or use. Neither label, by itself, specifies frequency or explains the scene’s context; use the rating summary for more information when available.
What does “Mild” mean before a descriptor?
ESRB says the modifier “Mild” conveys low frequency, intensity, or severity. It is a cue about the content, not a guarantee that the material will be untroubling for every player. Individual sensitivities differ, and the descriptor list is not exhaustive.

How to check a game’s rating information
- Read the age category and descriptors together. The category and the content labels serve different purposes; one should not be treated as a substitute for the other.
- Look for the rating summary. Summaries are available for many physical games and can add detail about content and context. ESRB’s Ratings Guide explains rating summaries.
- Check interactive-element notices separately. ESRB uses these notices for features such as online interaction, location sharing, in-game purchases, or unrestricted internet access. They address interactive features and do not influence the rating assignment. ESRB’s ratings overview describes these notices.
- Use device parental controls if needed. Controls can help manage play, access by rating, and in-game spending; ESRB presents them as an additional management tool, not part of the rating itself. See ESRB’s ratings overview.
Are ESRB descriptors used everywhere?
No universal reach is established for these names and definitions. ESRB terminology is most directly useful for games with ESRB information; other countries and rating systems may use different labels. ESRB says it was founded in 1994 and is a founding rating authority of IARC, whose process covers digitally delivered games and mobile apps, but that does not make the ESRB descriptor definitions universal. ESRB’s ratings overview gives its background and IARC context.
