In System Settings → Data Management, choose the software-deletion option. Nintendo says this removes the game’s downloaded files while leaving its save data in the console’s system memory. You can download the software again later. The separate save-data deletion command is destructive and should not be used as a storage-cleanup shortcut.
Before removing anything, decide whether you need more room for installed games, downloadable content, updates, or Album captures. Each category has a different cleanup method. A microSD Express card expands room for supported software and captures, but it never becomes a save-data drive.

What you can delete safely—and what you must not delete
Switch 2 storage is divided into different kinds of data. Treating them as interchangeable is how players accidentally remove progress. A game’s downloaded files, its updates, downloadable content, screenshots, videos and save data follow different rules.

| Data type | What it contains | Can you remove it to free space? | What happens to your save? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downloaded software data | The installed files for a digitally downloaded game or a game that has been installed from physical media | Yes. Use the software-data deletion command in Data Management. | Nintendo says the save remains in system memory. |
| Updates and downloadable content | Patch data and separately downloaded game content | Manage it through the software and Data Management options available on your console. Check the title’s stated download requirement before removing anything you still need. | Deleting software data is distinct from deleting save data; do not select the save-data deletion command. |
| Screenshots and videos | Captures in the Album | Yes. Delete them from the console or from the microSD Express card, or copy them to a computer first. | Captures are separate from game saves. |
| Save data | Your progress, settings and other game-specific records | Do not delete it as a storage-cleanup method. | It is stored in the console’s system memory, not on a microSD Express card. |
The key distinction is simple: software data is replaceable; save data is your progress. A microSD Express card can hold supported software data and captures, but it cannot hold, back up or relocate save data.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What “delete software data” means
This command removes the installed software files that occupy storage. It is similar to uninstalling a game while leaving its progress record in place. When you reinstall the title, the console can use the existing save data. The download itself, and any data that the title requires again, must be obtained before you can resume playing.
Deleting a capture is a separate action from deleting a game. Likewise, deleting save data is not an expanded version of software deletion; it is a different, destructive control. Read the full confirmation message every time.
Delete downloaded software while keeping the save
Nintendo’s official deletion guidance separates software deletion from save-data deletion. Menu wording can vary with the system language or regional software version, so follow the labels shown on your Switch 2 rather than selecting an option based only on its position in the list.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management.
- Open the option for deleting or managing software data. Do not open the command specifically labeled for deleting save data.
- Select the game whose downloaded files you want to remove.
- Read the confirmation screen and confirm the software-data deletion.
Afterward, the installed software files no longer occupy that space, but Nintendo says the game’s save data remains on the console. When you want to play again, download the software again. The save is not recreated by the download; it was left in place throughout the cleanup.
Before confirming, identify the destructive option
Switch 2 presents save-data management separately. A command that says delete save data, or equivalent wording in your language, removes progress rather than merely uninstalling the game. Do not use it because a title appears large in the storage list. If the goal is to make room, back out and choose software-data deletion instead.
Check how much room a game needs before removing it
In System Settings → Data Management, check the console’s available space. Nintendo also advises checking a game’s official product page or its packaging for the required download size. This matters when a game is close to the limit: deleting one title may not leave enough room for a different title’s download, update or downloadable content.
Check the requirement before deleting a title you plan to reinstall soon. A physical game can still have installed software, updates or additional content that require storage. Freeing space now does not eliminate that later download requirement.

Free space by managing screenshots and videos
Captures can consume substantial room independently of installed games. Because screenshots and videos are not save data, you can remove them without affecting game progress. Nintendo supports managing captures stored on the console or on a microSD Express card.
Delete captures directly on Switch 2
- Open the Album from the HOME Menu.
- Review screenshots and videos you no longer need.
- Use the Album’s delete command to remove selected files, following the on-screen confirmation.
This is the fastest option when you simply need space and do not need an archive. Review videos carefully before confirming because deleting a capture does not affect the associated game, but it does remove that media file.
Copy captures to a computer first
For an archive, Nintendo’s guidance describes using a computer’s SD slot or a compatible card reader/writer. Copy the Album folder from the card or console storage to the computer, then open several copied files to verify that the transfer completed. Keep the original source files until that check is finished. Only then delete the originals from the Switch 2 or the card.
Copy the folder rather than moving it, so the original remains available during verification. This workflow is media management, not save-data backup. Copying an Album folder does not copy game saves, and restoring captures later will not restore progress.
When a reader is useful
A computer-compatible microSD Express reader can make a large capture transfer or card migration easier. It is not required for ordinary in-console deletion. Confirm that any reader supports microSD Express before relying on it for a Switch 2 card.
Use the right storage card for Switch 2
Switch 2 storage expansion requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo says cards without the microSD Express logo cannot be used for this purpose. An ordinary microSD or microSDXC card may fit physically, but it is not a supported substitute for Switch 2 expansion.
| Question | MicroSD Express answer |
|---|---|
| Can it store downloaded software data? | Yes, for software supported by the console and card. |
| Can it store screenshots and videos? | Yes. |
| Can it store save data? | No. Nintendo states that save data is stored in the console’s system memory. |
| Can it be used as a save backup? | No. Card capacity does not change the save-data rule. |
| Can a standard non-Express microSD card expand Switch 2 storage? | No, according to Nintendo’s support guidance. |
Choose capacity based on the size of the software library and captures you expect to keep, but do not infer save-data capability from capacity, speed rating or brand. The official guidance here does not establish a best brand, a required capacity or a current price.

What the card does and does not solve
Adding a card gives supported downloads and captures somewhere to reside, reducing pressure on available storage. It does not increase the amount of system memory reserved for saves, and it does not provide a second copy of those saves. If a card is lost or damaged, the save-data rule is unchanged: saves belong to the console’s system memory.

Replace a full card with a larger microSD Express card
If your current card is full, Nintendo provides a computer-based copy procedure. This is different from deleting software and different from transferring saves between consoles.
- Prepare a larger, Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card and a computer that can read both cards, directly or through a compatible reader.
- Remove the current card and copy its Nintendo folder to a temporary location on the computer, or directly to the new card if your computer and workflow allow a complete copy.
- Copy the Nintendo folder to the larger card without renaming it, changing its contents or selectively rearranging files.
- Wait for the computer to finish copying. Keep the original card and its data untouched until the copy is complete and verified.
- Insert the copied card into the Switch 2 and use the copied card as Nintendo directs. Do not continue using pre-copy data from the old card as if the two cards were one library.
Important limits of the card-copy process
- Nintendo says contents from multiple cards cannot be combined onto one card. If your software is spread across several cards, this procedure does not merge them into a single consolidated library.
- Do not alter the Nintendo folder while copying. Renaming, editing or merging files can prevent the console from recognizing the copied data.
- Nintendo notes that copied software data cannot be used across multiple consoles. The copy is for moving the card’s data to the replacement card for the intended Switch 2, not for creating a second working software library on another console.
- Keep the old card until the new card has been copied and checked. A premature format or deletion removes your fallback if the computer copy is incomplete.
Do not format the replacement card, rename folders or reorganize files as part of an experiment. The supported workflow is intentionally conservative: preserve the Nintendo folder, complete the copy, verify it, and retain the original until you are satisfied the migration worked.
Which cleanup method fits your situation?
| Situation | Action | Save preserved on the current console? | Does the removed item need to be downloaded again? | Extra hardware |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| You finished a large downloaded game but may play it later | Delete its software data in Data Management. | Yes, provided you do not choose save-data deletion. | Yes, the software must be downloaded again before playing. | None. |
| Your Album is full of old clips | Delete screenshots/videos, or copy them to a computer and then delete them. | Yes. Captures are separate from saves. | No game download is involved. | None for deletion; a computer and compatible reader may help with copying. |
| You need more permanent room for software and captures | Use a supported microSD Express card. | Yes. Saves remain in system memory. | Existing software may need to be moved or downloaded according to Nintendo’s card procedure. | A card; a computer and reader may be needed for a full-card replacement. |
| Your current card is full | Copy the Nintendo folder intact to a larger microSD Express card. | Save data remains in system memory. | Use the copied card rather than assuming data on multiple cards can be merged. | New card and computer/reader for the copy procedure. |
| You are replacing the console | Use Nintendo’s System Transfer or individual save-data-transfer procedure. | Not automatically; transfer rules depend on the operation and the game. | Not a storage-cleanup operation. | Follow the transfer instructions for the consoles involved. |
Use the least disruptive option first. Deleting a finished download needs no accessory and preserves the save. Capture cleanup is appropriate when Album files are the problem. A card purchase helps when you regularly keep several downloads or many captures, while a card replacement is appropriate only when the existing card itself is full.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Deleting save data because it appears beside software management
Data Management contains both software and save-related controls. Read the complete label before confirming. If the command says it will delete save data, stop; that is not the option Nintendo recommends for freeing storage.

Switch 2 expansion is limited to microSD Express. Look for the microSD Express logo and confirm compatibility before purchase. A card’s large capacity does not make a non-Express model usable.
Assuming a card is a save backup
Save data cannot be saved to a microSD Express card. Keep the card for supported software files and captures, not as a replacement for the console’s system-memory save storage.

Deleting captures before checking a computer copy
Nintendo advises retaining source files until copying completes. Open copied files and confirm that the transfer is usable before deleting the originals.
Combining cards by dragging folders together
Nintendo says data from multiple cards cannot be combined onto one card. Do not attempt an improvised merge. Use the supported copy procedure from one current card to one larger card.
Formatting or discarding the old card too soon
The original card is your recovery copy while the transfer is in progress. Keep it intact until the new card has been copied and checked in the console.
Expecting deletion to preserve offline access
Software deletion preserves the save, not the installed game files. You cannot launch the removed download until the software is downloaded again. Plan the re-download when you have sufficient space for the title and any required update or content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Freeing space is not the same as moving saves to another console
If you are changing consoles, do not use software deletion or a card replacement as a substitute for System Transfer. Nintendo distinguishes a whole-system transfer from transferring an individual user’s save data. Those procedures move data between consoles; they do not simply reclaim space on one console.
Nintendo also warns that a local transfer can remove some data from the source console, including saves for games that do not support Save Data Cloud. Before starting a transfer, follow the instructions for the specific transfer type and check the individual game’s save behavior. A card copy does not bypass those rules because save data remains in system memory.

When transfer guidance matters
If the old console is being replaced, first identify whether you need a whole-system transfer or an individual user save-data transfer. Do not assume that copying the microSD Express card completes either task. The card contains supported software data and captures; the transfer procedure governs user and game saves.

A practical storage-maintenance routine
- Open System Settings → Data Management whenever free space becomes tight and identify whether software or captures are responsible.
- Remove completed or rarely played software with the software-data deletion command, never the save-data deletion command.
- Review Album videos and screenshots separately. Archive important captures to a computer, verify the copy, then delete the originals.
- Use only a microSD Express card when you need additional storage for software and captures.
- If replacing a full card, copy the Nintendo folder intact, keep the old card until verification, and do not combine data from multiple cards.
- If the goal is a new console rather than more room, stop and use the appropriate Nintendo transfer procedure instead.
Following those distinctions lets you remove large replaceable files while leaving progress where Nintendo stores it: the Switch 2’s system memory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will deleting a downloaded game erase my progress?
No. Nintendo says deleting software data leaves the game’s save data in the console’s system memory. You must avoid the separate command that explicitly deletes save data.
Do I need to redownload a game after deleting its software data?
Yes. The installed files are removed, so download the software again before playing. The existing save remains on the console.
Can I use a regular microSD or microSDXC card in Switch 2?
Nintendo’s expansion guidance requires a microSD Express card. Cards without the microSD Express logo are not supported for Switch 2 storage expansion.
Can a microSD Express card back up my saves?
No. Save data is stored in the console’s system memory and cannot be saved to, backed up to or relocated onto the card.
What can I delete if my Album is full?
Delete screenshots and videos from the console or microSD Express card. If you want to keep them, copy the Album folder to a computer, verify several copied files, and retain the originals until the copy is complete.
Can I combine two full cards onto one larger card?
Nintendo says contents from multiple cards cannot be combined onto one card. Use the supported copy procedure from one current card to one replacement card instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I keep the old card after copying to a larger one?
Yes. Keep the original card and its data untouched until the copy finishes and the replacement card has been checked. Do not format the old card prematurely.
Is a card replacement the same as transferring saves to a new console?
No. Card replacement moves supported software data and captures for the intended console. System Transfer or individual save-data transfer handles console migration, and game-specific caveats apply.
The Bottom Line
To free Switch 2 space safely, delete software data—not save data. Archive or remove Album captures separately, use only microSD Express for expansion, and copy a full card’s Nintendo folder intact while keeping the original until verification. Saves remain in system memory, so storage cleanup and console-to-console transfer must be treated as separate tasks.
