You can free internal space on an Xbox Series S without uninstalling games by moving less-played titles to a USB external drive. For games you want to keep ready to play—including Series X|S optimized titles—an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card is the more direct option because it matches internal storage performance. A USB drive is useful as an archive, but some optimized games must be moved back before they can launch.
Choose where to keep the games
Xbox identifies USB external hard drives and Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards as ways to add storage. The right choice depends on whether you want to archive games or play them directly from the added storage.
| Storage option | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| USB 3.1 external hard drive | Keeping less-played games installed outside the console’s internal storage, and playing compatible titles | Some Series X|S optimized games stored on USB need to be moved to internal storage or an Expansion Card before play. |
| Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card | Adding space for games that need internal-storage performance and keeping them ready to play | It is additional hardware. Check the current model, capacity, compatibility, and availability in your market. |
Xbox’s console overview lists internal storage capacities of 512 GB or 1 TB across its console lineup; those figures are not a statement of the exact usable capacity on every Series S configuration. Xbox console overview.
Move games to a USB drive to archive them
A USB drive can hold game installations so they do not occupy internal console storage. Use it as a library for titles you are not playing right now. Before relying on it for a particular game, confirm that the drive is formatted for Xbox game storage and check whether the game is optimized for Series X|S.

Series X|S optimized games on external USB storage may need to be transferred to internal storage or a Storage Expansion Card to play, according to Seagate’s Xbox USB drive support guidance. A USB archive therefore preserves the installation, but it does not guarantee that every title can launch from that drive.
Move versus copy
- Move: Transfers the installation to the other drive and frees the space it occupied on the original drive once the transfer is complete.
- Copy: Keeps the original installation and creates another one, so it does not free the original internal space.
Connect a supported drive, then use the Xbox storage or game-management interface to move or copy installations. The exact menu labels can vary with the console interface, so follow the options shown on your Series S rather than relying on an unverified Settings path.

Back up captures separately from game installations
Screenshots and game clips are separate from installed games. Xbox says captures can be backed up to OneDrive or an external storage device, including through management and bulk-upload features announced in September 2023. This can preserve captures away from the console, but it does not move game installations. See Xbox Wire’s capture backup announcement for the described options.

If you do not need a game’s installation retained on either the console or an external drive, uninstalling an inactive game is another way to recover internal space. It does not meet the goal of keeping the installation, so use it only when moving or adding storage is not suitable.
