The safest procedure is: identify your edition and hosting mode, stop the game or server, make and label an untouched backup, create the new map without reusing the old map’s save location, and restore or select the original map when you want to return. Exact menus and paths differ between ARK: Survival Evolved, ARK: Survival Ascended, console versions, PC installations, and hosting panels, so treat the examples below as a model for the process rather than a universal path.

What happens when you create another ARK world?
ARK does not have to use one global world save. In single-player and non-dedicated sessions, the selected map determines which map-specific save is opened. The official save documentation lists separate locations with names such as SavedArksLocal, TheCenterSavedArksLocal, and ScorchedEarth_PSavedArksLocal. A new map therefore starts its own world while the previous map remains in its original directory.
That separation is the key to switching safely. Selecting a different map is not the same as deleting the first one. The old world is at risk only if you overwrite, remove, replace, or misplace its save files. Dedicated servers use a different layout: the relevant server data is held beneath ShooterGame/Saved, and the server’s active map and configuration determine what is loaded. You can either change the active map after backing up or operate another server instance for the second map.

Before following any file instruction, establish four facts:
- Whether you are running ARK: Survival Evolved or ARK: Survival Ascended.
- Whether the session is single-player, non-dedicated, or a dedicated server.
- Which map is the old world and which map you want to start.
- Whether the host, platform, or control panel uses a custom save directory.
Those details affect names and locations. Do not copy a path from a different edition or hosting provider and assume it applies unchanged.
Make a safe backup before changing anything
Backing up is the step that turns a risky map change into a reversible one. A backup should be made while the game is closed or the server is stopped. Copying files while ARK is writing a save can leave you with an incomplete or inconsistent copy.
Single-player and non-dedicated backup
- Leave the session and close ARK completely.
- Find the local save directory used by your edition and platform. Identify the folder belonging to the old map; map-specific names commonly include
SavedArksLocal,TheCenterSavedArksLocal, orScorchedEarth_PSavedArksLocal. - Copy that entire old-map folder to a location outside the live save directory, such as another drive or a clearly named archival folder.
- Give the copy a useful label containing the map and date, for example
old-map-backup-2026-10-16. Do not work from the only copy.
Keep the original folder where ARK expects it. The external copy is your rollback if a map change, update, mod change, or accidental deletion damages the live save.
Dedicated-server backup
Stop the server before copying data. For ARK: Survival Evolved dedicated servers, the documented backup is a copy of the complete ShooterGame/Saved directory. It includes world, tribe, player, configuration, log, and cluster data. Copying only a single world file can leave you without the associated player or tribe state needed for a useful recovery.

- Stop the server through the host panel, service manager, or your normal shutdown method.
- Wait until the process is fully stopped and no save files are still changing.
- Copy the entire
ShooterGame/Saveddirectory outside the live server installation. - Label the copy with the server, map, and date, and keep it unchanged.
- Only after the copy is verified should you change the active map, update files, or remove anything from the live directory.
Dedicated servers normally save world data every 15 minutes. The documented configuration also allows up to 20 automatic save backups by default. Those are useful safeguards, but they do not replace a manual copy immediately before a map change: an automatic rotation can occur after a mistake and may not preserve the exact pre-change state you need.

Start a new map in single-player or non-dedicated mode
This mode is the simplest because each map has its own save location. The following sequence preserves the old world without asking you to move or rename its files.
1. Close the current session
Exit to the main menu and then close the game before handling save folders. If you are the host of a non-dedicated session, make sure the host process is no longer writing the save.
2. Preserve the old map folder
Confirm that the old map’s folder is still present in the local save location. Do not rename it unless you have a specific recovery reason, and do not extract a new archive into it. If you made the backup described above, leave both the live folder and the external copy intact.
3. Select the new map through the game’s map screen
Use the map-selection control for your edition and choose the map you want to start. Menu labels differ between editions and platforms, so follow the label shown by your installation rather than relying on a guide written for another release.

4. Create the new world
Start the session with the new map selected. ARK will create or open that map’s own save location. Do not select the old map’s name while intending to create a fresh world, and do not paste the old map’s files into the new map’s folder.
5. Verify that the new save is separate
After entering the new world, quit normally and check that the new map has its own save folder or files while the old map’s folder remains unchanged. This quick check catches a mistaken folder replacement before you invest time in the new world.
Return to the original single-player world
- Exit the current map and return to the map-selection screen.
- Choose the original map by its exact map name.
- Start the session without deleting or replacing that map’s save folder.
- Confirm that your previous structures, characters, tribes, and settings appear as they did before the switch.
Each map retains its own save, so returning to the original map should load its prior state. If ARK offers a choice to start a new world or continue an existing one, choose the existing save for the original map. If the game instead shows a blank world, stop and check the selected edition, map name, and save location before playing or saving again; creating a new save over the wrong location can make recovery harder.
Change maps on a dedicated server
A dedicated server gives you two practical designs. You can run one server and change which map it loads, or run separate server instances so both maps remain available at the same time. Back up first in either design.
Option A: switch the active map on one server
- Stop the server and copy the complete
ShooterGame/Saveddirectory. - Record the current map and any settings you will need to restore, including the server configuration used by your host.
- Change the active-map setting in the hosting panel, configuration, or launch setup used by your server. The control’s name and syntax vary by provider and edition.
- Start the server with the new map selected. Let it create the new map’s data rather than deleting the backup or moving the old data over it.
- Test that the new map starts and that the old backup remains outside the live directory.
To go back, stop the server, select the original map in the same server configuration, and start it using the preserved original save data. If the host requires a map-specific save directory, put the original files in that directory exactly as the host documents; never scatter files across similarly named folders.

Option B: run a second server instance
Use a second instance when players need both maps online or when you want to avoid repeatedly changing one server’s active map. Give each instance its own live server setup and map selection according to the host’s instructions. Keep the original server’s backup separate from both live instances. The exact ports, service names, and panel fields are host-specific and should not be guessed from another setup.
Running two independent instances lets players connect to either map, but the worlds remain independent unless you configure a cluster. If you do not need travel between maps, independent saves are simpler and reduce the number of shared settings that can be misconfigured.
Enable transfers between simultaneous maps
Cross-map travel on unofficial servers requires more than merely launching two maps. The ARK server-configuration documentation states that dynamic Cross-ARK Travel requires at least two servers with the same cluster ID and cluster directory. In practice, each instance runs its own map while both point to the same cluster identity and shared cluster storage defined by the host.
Cluster requirements
- At least two server instances, each running a map.
- The same cluster ID on every participating instance.
- The same cluster directory or shared cluster storage on every instance.
- Backups of the complete saved data before enabling or changing the cluster.
The cluster directory is not a replacement for the individual map saves. Keep each map’s world data and the shared cluster data protected. If one instance uses a different cluster ID or points to a different directory, transfers can fail or appear to vanish because the servers are not reading the same transfer location.

Restore an old world safely
Restoration is a controlled replacement, not a file drag-and-drop performed while the server is running. Preserve the damaged or current state before replacing it so you can undo the restoration if you selected the wrong map or backup.

Dedicated-server restoration
- Stop the server completely.
- Copy the current
ShooterGame/Saveddirectory to a separate emergency folder. This protects the state you are about to replace. - Identify the backup that matches the original map and date you want.
- Place the backup files in the correct live save directory, following the host’s documented layout. Do not merge unrelated map folders or cluster directories by guesswork.
- Set the server to the matching original map and configuration.
- Start the server and verify the world, player, tribe, and configuration state before allowing normal play.
Never overwrite the only copy of the old save. If the restored world is not the expected one, stop again and return to the preserved emergency copy rather than repeatedly experimenting on the live files.
Single-player archive restoration
Use the archive for the map you intend to restore and extract it into the proper folder for that selected map and mode. The official save guidance specifically warns that archives must be extracted into the correct map folder. Close ARK first, preserve the current folder, extract the backup, then launch the matching map and verify the result.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect world
The old map appears to be gone
- Check that you selected the original map, not a similarly named variant.
- Confirm that the original map-specific folder still exists and was not replaced by a new empty save.
- Check that you are using the same edition and mode as when the save was created.
- Look for the external backup before changing any more files.
The new map loads the old world
- Stop playing and exit ARK so it cannot save the mistaken state.
- Check whether the new map was pointed at the old map’s folder or whether files were manually copied into the wrong location.
- Restore the pre-change backup if the wrong map has already been saved over live data.
A dedicated server starts the wrong map
- Verify the active-map setting in the host panel or launch configuration.
- Stop the server before editing and confirm that no second service or instance is using the same live directory.
- Use the backup to separate a configuration problem from a damaged save.
Cross-map travel does not work
- Confirm that at least two unofficial server instances are running.
- Compare the cluster ID character by character on every instance.
- Confirm that every instance points to the same cluster directory or shared cluster storage.
- Check that the instances are not using isolated host paths that only look alike in their control panels.
The save seems older than expected
The documented 15-minute automatic save interval means the most recent automatic copy may not contain the last several minutes of play. Use the manual backup made immediately before the map change when exact timing matters. Automatic backup counts and intervals can be changed by server configuration, so treat the documented defaults as defaults rather than a guarantee for every host.
Choose the least risky setup
For occasional experiments, single-player or non-dedicated play with untouched map folders is sufficient. You can move between maps by selecting them, provided you do not delete or overwrite the original folder.
For a hosted community that needs one map online at a time, a single dedicated server is workable: make a complete ShooterGame/Saved copy, change the active map, and retain the old copy for rollback.
For a community that wants both maps available concurrently, use separate server instances. Add a shared cluster only when players actually need Cross-ARK Travel, because doing so introduces cluster ID and shared-directory settings that must remain identical.

- Edition identified: ARK: Survival Evolved or ARK: Survival Ascended.
- Mode identified: single-player, non-dedicated, or dedicated.
- Current map and desired new map written down.
- Game closed or server stopped.
- Single-player: old map folder copied outside the live save location.
- Dedicated: complete

With those safeguards, generating a new ARK world is an additive change rather than a destructive reset: the new map gets its own save, while the old map remains available whenever you select it or restore its preserved server data.
