You still need a legitimate PC copy of the original Subnautica; Nitrox supplies the multiplayer server and client software, not the game itself. Install Nitrox, launch NitroxLauncher as administrator, choose Server → Start Server, and give friends the address displayed by the server. Remote players normally need access through UDP port 11000, either by forwarding that port on your router or by using a virtual LAN VPN such as Hamachi.
What “free Subnautica server” actually means
Nitrox is an open-source multiplayer modification for the original Subnautica. It is not an official multiplayer mode from the game’s developer, and it does not remove the requirement to own and install the base game. The no-monthly-fee option is self-hosting: your own computer runs the Nitrox server process while you and your friends play.

That arrangement avoids a required server-rental bill, but it is not the same as free 24/7 hosting. The host PC must be running and connected whenever friends want to play. Your home upload speed, router, firewall and hardware also affect whether other players can connect reliably. Nitrox lists public servers separately; those servers are operated by third parties and are not hosted or moderated by the Nitrox project.

What you need before installing
- A PC installation of the original Subnautica. The game is a separate prerequisite product.
- The current Nitrox release downloaded from the project’s official distribution channel.
- A Windows host with permission to run the launcher and server with administrator privileges. Nitrox’s 1.8.0.0 release notes describe Linux support as experimental and macOS support as pending for that release.
- Access to the host computer’s router settings if you plan to use conventional port forwarding.
- Your friends’ Nitrox installations on compatible versions. Steam and Epic players were supported on the latest Subnautica version in the 1.8.0.0 release notes.
Nitrox’s homepage identified version 1.8.1.0 as the latest release at the time of the supplied 2026 page capture. Check the launcher and current release notes when you install, because this is an actively developed project and compatibility can change.

Install Nitrox and start a server
- Install or update Subnautica. Complete the normal PC installation and launch it once if necessary so the platform has created its game files.
- Install the matching Nitrox release. Install the launcher where you can find it easily. Every player should use the same Nitrox release unless the project’s compatibility notes explicitly say otherwise.
- Run NitroxLauncher as administrator. Right-click the launcher, choose Run as administrator, and approve the Windows prompt. Administrative access can be required for the server component and network rules.
- Open the server controls. In NitroxLauncher, select Server, then choose Start Server.
- Configure the session. Set a server password if you want a private game. Use the available server settings for the game mode and other options shown by your release.
- Copy the displayed address. The server window shows the address that clients should use. Send that address and the password, if one is set, to your friends privately.
- Leave the server process running. Closing the server window, putting the host to sleep or shutting down the PC ends the session for everyone.
The launcher and server interface can change between releases, so use the labels in your installed version rather than relying on an older screenshot. The essential path remains Server → Start Server.
Make the server reachable from the internet
The Nitrox hosting guide states that the server needs an open port to communicate and identifies UDP port 11000 as the standard port. A server that works for someone playing on the same home network may still be unreachable by a friend elsewhere until this traffic is allowed through the host network.
Option 1: Forward UDP 11000 on the router
- Give the host PC a stable local address. A DHCP reservation in the router is preferable to an address that changes after a reboot.
- Sign in to the router’s administration page and open the section usually called Port Forwarding, NAT or Virtual Server.
- Create a rule for UDP, external port 11000, forwarding to the host PC’s local IP address and port 11000.
- Save the rule and restart the Nitrox server if the router requires it.
- Give friends the public address shown or provided for the server, not the host’s private address such as
192.168.x.xor10.x.x.x.
Router menus differ by manufacturer. Do not forward every port, and do not select TCP when the rule specifically requires UDP. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, your router may not have a publicly reachable address; in that case, a normal forward can appear correct but still fail.

A virtual LAN service such as Hamachi can avoid changing the router’s inbound rules. Install the same VPN client on the host and each friend’s PC, have everyone join the same virtual network, and use the host’s VPN address when connecting. This shifts some work to the VPN software and can add another source of latency, but it is useful when you cannot administer the router or when the internet connection does not provide a usable public address.

Everyone must be online in the same virtual network before launching or joining the Nitrox session. Keep the VPN network private and share its access credentials only with people you trust.
Option 3: Try UPnP, then keep the manual fallback
Nitrox’s homepage advertises automatic port forwarding through UPnP. If UPnP is enabled and supported by your router, the launcher may create the required mapping without manual entry. UPnP behavior depends on the router, firmware and network configuration, so treat it as a convenience rather than a guarantee. If friends cannot connect, disable guesswork and configure the UDP 11000 rule manually or move the group to a virtual LAN.
Allow Nitrox and Subnautica through the firewall
Windows Firewall can block a correctly forwarded port. Create or approve inbound and outbound rules for both the game and server components named in the official guide:

When Windows displays a network-access prompt, allow the applications on the network profile you actually use. If the prompt was dismissed, open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security, inspect Inbound Rules and Outbound Rules, and add rules for those executable files. Restrict access to private networks where practical; do not broadly disable the firewall as a troubleshooting shortcut.
If you change the Nitrox installation folder, the executable path can change and an old firewall rule may no longer match. Remove the obsolete rule and create a new one for the current file location.
How friends join
- Each friend installs the same compatible Subnautica and Nitrox versions.
- They start NitroxLauncher and choose the multiplayer or client option shown by their release.
- They enter the server address you supplied. Use the public address for a forwarded server or the host’s VPN address for a virtual-LAN setup.
- They enter the password exactly as configured, if you set one.
Do not send a private LAN address to an internet-only friend, and do not send a public address to someone who is meant to connect through the VPN unless the client specifically asks for that VPN address. If the server list or connection screen differs from these labels, follow the current Nitrox interface while preserving the same network arrangement.
Troubleshoot the common connection failures
The server starts, but nobody outside the house can join
- Confirm the router rule is UDP 11000, points to the host’s current local IP and is enabled.
- Check that the host PC is not asleep and that
NitroxServer-Subnautica.exeis still running. - Verify firewall permissions for both listed executables.
- Check whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or a second router. Double NAT can prevent inbound traffic; placing the forwarding rule on the upstream router or using a VPN may be necessary.
- If UPnP was relied on, inspect the router’s UPnP mappings and switch to a manual rule if no mapping exists.
Friends can connect on the same Wi-Fi but not remotely
This pattern usually means the local server works and the missing piece is internet reachability: the forwarded address, firewall, public IP or carrier-grade NAT. Test with the VPN method to separate a Nitrox problem from a router problem. If the VPN connection succeeds, the game and server are functioning and the home-network path needs attention.

A changing local address can make the router forward to the wrong computer. Create a DHCP reservation for the host, update the forwarding rule, restart the server and send friends the current address shown by Nitrox.

A player receives a version or compatibility error
Compare the Nitrox release and Subnautica build on every PC. Update or roll back together according to the current Nitrox release notes. Do not assume that a launcher update on only the host is harmless: the client and server need a supported combination.
The game is unstable or features do not behave as expected
Nitrox is an actively developed project, and the 1.8.0.0 release notes label the software ALPHA. The Subnautica 2.0 update required a major rewrite. That history means a successful installation does not promise that every single-player feature, mod or edge case will behave identically in multiplayer. Reproduce the problem with a clean, matching installation, check the release notes and report a repeatable issue through the project’s support channels.

Nitrox’s server feature page advertises a maximum of 100 connected players, but lists five players as the recommended count. The 100-player figure is a documented upper limit, not a recommendation for an ordinary co-op group and not an independent performance benchmark. Your hardware, connection and world activity still determine the practical experience.
The server feature list includes a server console, built-in chat, a configurable port, automatic saves, configurable game modes, public mode and password-protected private mode. Use a password for a friends-only world, especially if you are forwarding a port to the internet. Keep backups of the save data before testing a new release or changing major settings; automatic saves reduce routine work but are not a substitute for an independent copy.
Self-hosting versus a managed server
Self-hosting is the only option established here as having no required monthly hosting fee. A managed host may be useful if you need a machine running around the clock, a data-center location closer to your players or someone else to handle operating-system maintenance, but provider price, region, backup policy and Nitrox support must be checked individually. The following is the practical decision framework:

For a small group that plays at agreed times, self-hosting is normally the simplest free route. For an always-available community server, the important question is not merely “is it cheap?” but who supplies uptime, backups, moderation, updates and recovery when the host is offline.

Public servers and trust
Nitrox does not host or moderate public servers. Third-party uptime is not guaranteed by the project. A public server can therefore disappear, change rules or be unavailable without Nitrox being able to restore it. Use a password-protected private server for a controlled group, and avoid sharing personal information through in-game chat. If you join a public server, treat it as someone else’s computer and do not assume that its operator follows the same backup or moderation standards as an official service.
Keeping a free server usable
- Keep the host PC wired to the router when possible; Wi-Fi interference can add packet loss during busy sessions.
- Prevent sleep while the server is expected to run, but keep normal operating-system and security updates enabled.
- Record the Nitrox version, Subnautica build, server port and save location before upgrading.
- Back up saves before installing a new Nitrox release, changing game modes or adding other modifications.
- Use a strong, unique server password for private games and change it if an unwanted player receives it.
- Monitor upload saturation. Large downloads, cloud backups or video uploads on the same connection can make multiplayer feel unstable even when the server software is healthy.
What to expect from Nitrox’s current status
The project’s homepage reported more than 3.4 million downloads and more than 22,000 Discord users in a 2026 page capture, indicating a substantial community. Those figures do not measure server uptime, multiplayer performance or the quality of any individual public server. The release notes’ ALPHA designation and the major rewrite required by Subnautica 2.0 are the more relevant warnings for someone planning a long-running world: check compatibility before every major game or Nitrox update, and retain a recoverable save.
Bottom line for a free co-op session
Install the original PC game and Nitrox on every computer, start NitroxLauncher as administrator, choose Server → Start Server, and protect the session with a password. For friends outside your home, forward UDP 11000 to the host and allow Subnautica.exe plus NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe through the firewall. If router access or carrier-grade NAT blocks you, place everyone on the same VPN and use the host’s VPN address instead. The result is a genuinely no-hosting-fee server, provided you accept responsibility for the host PC, network, saves and availability.
