For a strong all-purpose sword, build toward Sharpness V, Looting III, Unbreaking III, Mending I and Fire Aspect II. Knockback II is optional, and Java Edition players can also add Sweeping Edge III. You cannot combine Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods on one sword, so choose the damage enchantment that suits the enemies you fight.
What counts as a maxed-out sword?
There is no single best sword for every player. “Maxed-out” usually means a sword with the highest useful levels of compatible enchantments, but the right damage enchantment depends on your targets and some effects are a matter of preference.
- General-purpose: Sharpness V works across a broad range of enemies.
- Against undead: Smite V is the specialist alternative.
- Against arthropods: Bane of Arthropods V is the specialist alternative.
Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods are incompatible with one another. Pick one rather than planning to add all three to the same sword.
Recommended enchantments by edition

How to get the enchantments onto your sword
- Start with an unenchanted sword. Use an enchanting table to apply an initial enchantment. Enchanting-table use costs experience points and lapis lazuli, and the table only enchants items that have no enchantments.
- Find books for the missing enchantments. Librarian villagers can sell enchanted books for emeralds. Other book sources may also be available in the game.
- Use an anvil to add books. Combine the sword with an enchanted book, or combine compatible enchanted books before applying them. Anvils can also combine a suitably enchanted item with another item.
- Check compatibility as you assemble the build. Keep only one of Sharpness, Smite or Bane of Arthropods; the other recommendations can fill out the sword if available.
Microsoft Learn describes enchanting-table costs and the use of librarian villagers and anvils in its Introduction to Enchantments. There is no guaranteed cheapest anvil-combination order established here, so do not assume a particular sequence will avoid the anvil cost limit.

Choose Sharpness V, Looting III, Unbreaking III, Mending I and Fire Aspect II. Add Knockback II only if you like creating distance, and add Sweeping Edge III if you play Java Edition.

Undead or arthropod specialization
For a sword dedicated to undead, swap Sharpness V for Smite V. For one dedicated to arthropods, use Bane of Arthropods V instead. These are specialization choices, not extra damage enchantments to stack onto Sharpness.
Bedrock Edition
Use the same general-purpose choices that suit your play style, but leave out Sweeping Edge: it is not available on Bedrock.
