There is no universal free private-server service: whether you can play privately without paying depends on the game. In Roblox, some experiences offer free private servers if their creator enables them. Minecraft Realms is a paid subscription with a qualifying 30-day trial, not a permanently free plan.
Which option is actually free?
| Option | What it costs | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Roblox private server | Free or priced in Robux, depending on the experience creator | A private instance of an experience when its creator enables the feature |
| Minecraft Realms trial | 30 days for qualifying accounts; the subscription auto-renews unless canceled. Minecraft, 2026; US page. | A private, cloud-hosted world for the selected Minecraft edition |
| Minecraft Realms after the trial | Recurring subscription. Minecraft’s US prices in 2026 are shown below. | An always-online hosted world; invited friends do not need their own subscription |
These are different arrangements: Roblox may provide a genuinely free server, while Realms offers a time-limited trial of a paid service. Neither means every game has a free private-server option.
How to get a free private server in Roblox
- Open the page for the Roblox experience you want to play.
- Scroll to the Servers section. If the creator has enabled private servers, look for the private-server listing and Create Private Server control.
- Check the displayed price before creating one. If it is free, create the server and use its settings to manage who can join. If a Robux price is shown, that experience does not offer a free server through this option.
- Invite players or configure access in the server settings. Roblox Support says owners can allow up to 50 individual users or allow their friends list.
Availability is controlled by the experience creator, who can enable private servers and choose whether they cost Robux. Roblox Support notes that a creation error can mean an existing free server is already available for that experience or that the active-free-server limit has been reached. Check the experience’s server page and your server settings rather than assuming the feature is missing or that every experience allows another free server. Roblox Support’s private-server guidance explains the controls and possible errors.
Paid Roblox servers have an initial Robux charge and recurring monthly renewal; the owner can cancel before renewal. The price varies by experience creator. Roblox private servers can be useful for playing with friends, gatherings, recording or streaming without other players, or collecting in-game resources. Creators cannot enable private servers at the same time as paid access to the game. Roblox Creator documentation describes the feature and its constraints.

Private Roblox game versus private server
A private game is restricted to its creator or team under the publishing settings. A private server is an access-controlled instance of an experience that players can configure and invite people to. Making a game private does not create a free server for a group of friends. Roblox’s publishing guidance covers game access settings.
Age and access settings
For users under 13, Roblox says the default private-server setting allows only friends to join, and the user may join only friends’ servers, subject to privacy settings. Review the account’s privacy controls and the server’s invitation settings if a friend cannot join. Roblox Support provides the relevant access details.

Minecraft Realms: a trial, then a subscription

| Realm plan | US price listed by Minecraft (2026) | Simultaneous players |
|---|---|---|
| Realms for Bedrock | $3.99 USD/month | Owner plus 2 players |
| Realms Plus for Bedrock | $7.99 USD/month | Owner plus 10 players |

Choose the Realm that matches the group’s edition
Java players join Java Realms, and Bedrock players join Bedrock Realms; Realms cross-play works within the same edition, not between Java and Bedrock. Java supports Windows, Linux, and macOS. Bedrock supports listed consoles, mobile devices, and Windows. Console multiplayer may also require a separately sold subscription from the console platform. Confirm that everyone has the same edition before paying or starting a trial. Minecraft’s Realms page lists supported platforms and edition details.
Invites, saved worlds and expiration
The Realm owner’s subscription covers invited friends, so they do not need to buy their own Realm subscription. Minecraft says worlds can be downloaded for 18 months after the subscription expires. A Realm can store up to three worlds, with one active at a time. Download a world you want to keep within that post-expiration window. Minecraft’s Realms information describes invitations and world access.
