Contact your city or township clerk and submit a signed written request to spoil the ballot already issued and provide a replacement. Michigan commonly calls an absentee ballot an absent voter ballot. The deadline and whether you can receive a replacement by mail depend on whether your ballot was lost, already returned, or rejected for a signature.
Lost or never received your ballot
Use Michigan’s absentee voting page to find your local clerk and check your ballot status. Then contact the clerk promptly with a signed written request to spoil the ballot on record and issue a replacement. The state’s Request to Spoil Absent Voter Ballot form is the official form for this request.
If you request it by 5 p.m. the Friday before Election Day
You may ask the clerk to mail the replacement, or go to the clerk’s office and vote it there. Because most voters’ mailed ballots must reach the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day, a replacement mailed close to the deadline may not arrive in time. Confirm timing and any Sunday or legal-holiday qualification with your clerk.
If it is after 5 p.m. Friday but before 4 p.m. the day before Election Day
You must appear at the clerk’s office, submit the written request, and vote the replacement there. You cannot take this late replacement home to complete or return later. Michigan’s Election Officials Manual, Chapter 6 describes the clerk marking the original ballot spoiled before issuing or mailing a new one.

If you cannot get a replacement in time
You can go to your precinct polling place on Election Day, complete the Affidavit of Lost or Destroyed Absent Voter Ballot, and cast a regular ballot. The state manual notes that a properly credentialed election challenger may challenge a voter using this affidavit procedure.
If you returned the ballot and now want to change it
This is a different process from replacing a ballot that was lost or never received. To spoil an already-returned ballot, the clerk must receive your signed written request by 5 p.m. on the second Friday before Election Day. A ballot that has already been tabulated cannot be spoiled or changed. See the state’s early in-person voting FAQ and absentee voting guidance.

If your ballot was rejected because of a signature
Contact your clerk promptly and follow Michigan’s signature cure guidelines. The state says a written request to spoil the rejected ballot and issue a replacement must be received by 5 p.m. two Fridays before Election Day. A signature-cure form has its own deadline and submission options, so do not assume the lost-ballot replacement deadlines apply.

Michigan’s absentee voting page provides clerk lookup and ballot tracking. For most voters, a mailed ballot must be received by the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day to count; mailing it by Election Day is not enough. Military and overseas voters have different return rules, so follow the instructions that apply to your ballot.
