Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor Michigan’s November 3, 2026 general election, absentee voting lets you complete a ballot away from an early voting site and return it by the deadline; early in-person voting lets you vote at your assigned site during its local schedule. Most absentee ballots must reach the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The state’s early-voting period runs for at least nine days through Sunday, November 1, but site locations and hours vary. Check Michigan.gov/Vote for your assignment and current details.
Which option fits how you want to vote?
| Decision factor | Absentee voting | Early in-person voting |
|---|---|---|
| Where you complete the ballot | At home or at the clerk’s office | At your assigned early voting site |
| What to arrange | Request a ballot by the application deadline and allow time for delivery | Find your assigned site and check its dates and hours |
| How you cast it | Return by mail, drop box, or to the clerk; early voting sites can also accept a completed absentee ballot for verification and tabulation | Complete the ballot at the site and insert it into a tabulator |
| Main timing concern | For most voters, the clerk must receive it by 8 p.m. Election Day | Vote while your assigned site is open; the statewide 2026 period lasts through November 1 at minimum |
| Registering within 14 days of the election | Register or update your address at the clerk’s office with proof of residency; eligible voters can register and cast an absentee ballot there through Election Day | Register or update at the clerk’s office first; most early voting sites do not register voters |
| Changing plans | You can surrender an unsubmitted absentee ballot at an early voting site for a replacement; other spoil-and-replace rules depend on when and how it was submitted | Once your ballot is inserted into the tabulator, you cannot change it |
Both options are available to registered voters. Michigan voters may request an absentee ballot for any reason. Early in-person voting is available for statewide and federal elections to voters eligible for that election; local early voting may also be offered at a local clerk’s discretion. See the state’s early in-person voting guidance and absentee voting guidance.
Michigan absentee ballot deadlines for November 3, 2026
These dates apply the state-published relative deadlines to the 2026 general election. Your local clerk is the authority for your election and ballot-return options. The state’s 2026 General Election Toolkit provides election-specific information.
- Online application: Submit by 5 p.m. Friday, October 30. Apply earlier if possible to leave time to receive and return the ballot.
- Application by mail: The local clerk must receive it by 5 p.m. Friday, October 30.
- In-person application, if registered at your current address: Apply at the clerk’s office by 4 p.m. Monday, November 2.
- Register or update your address and request, complete, and submit an absentee ballot at the clerk’s office: This is available through 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, provided you are in line by 8 p.m. You must provide proof of residency to register or update within 14 days of the election.
- Return a standard absentee ballot: The clerk must receive it by 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 3. A ballot placed in a drop box must also be deposited by then. You may submit a completed absentee ballot at an early voting site through the last day of that site’s early voting period.
For military and overseas voters, the separate rule is that the ballot must be postmarked by Election Day and received within six days after the election. The general receipt deadline is not met by mailing a ballot on Election Day.

How to vote absentee
- Check your registration and address. If you are registered, request a ballot online, by mail, or from your local clerk. You may also choose to join Michigan’s permanent absentee ballot list. Start with the state’s absentee voting page.
- Apply by the right cutoff. Online and mailed applications are due by 5 p.m. on the Friday before Election Day; a voter registered at their current address can apply in person through 4 p.m. the day before. Earlier is safer because delivery takes time.
- Complete the ballot and sign the return envelope. Sign with a signature that resembles the one on file. The clerk checks the signature; an invalid signature can lead to rejection and notice to you.
- Return it using an eligible method. Use mail, a secure drop box, or delivery to your local clerk. In most cases the clerk must receive it by 8 p.m. Election Day. Do not assume that an Election Day postmark is enough.
- If your plans change, avoid voting twice. You may take an absentee ballot to an early voting site and surrender it for a replacement ballot. Alternatively, take your completed absentee ballot there for voter and ballot verification and tabulation.
How to vote early in person
- Check your registration and address before you go. If you need to register or update your address within 14 days of the election, visit your local clerk with proof of residency. Early voting sites generally do not register voters unless the location is a clerk’s office or satellite office. The state explains the process on its early in-person voting page and voter registration page.
- Look up your assigned site and its schedule. Use Michigan.gov/Vote to confirm the site, dates, and hours. Sites may serve voters from multiple precincts, cities, or townships, but you may vote only at your assigned site or sites.
- Vote while the site is operating. Michigan’s required early-voting period for statewide and federal elections is at least nine consecutive days, starting the second Saturday before Election Day and ending the Sunday before. For the November 3, 2026 general election, the state toolkit lists voting through Sunday, November 1; communities may offer additional days. The Monday before Election Day is not a guaranteed day at every location, so check your site’s schedule.
- Bring photo ID if you have it. State guidance recommends acceptable photo identification. If you do not have ID, you can still vote after signing an affidavit. Complete the ballot at the site and insert it into the tabulator.
- If you already have an absentee ballot, account for it. Surrender it at the early voting site to receive a replacement, or bring the completed ballot for verification and tabulation. Do not cast both ballots.
Where is my Michigan early voting site?
Your site is assigned; you cannot simply choose any early voting location. Look up your location, dates, and hours at Michigan.gov/Vote, or contact your local clerk. Local schedules and election details can change, so confirm them before traveling.
Can I register and vote on Election Day in Michigan?
Yes. If you are eligible but not registered at your current address, you can register or update your address in person at your local clerk’s office through 8 p.m. on Election Day, as long as you are in line by 8 p.m. Bring proof of residency. Eligible voters can request, complete, and submit an absentee ballot at the clerk’s office as part of this process. An early voting site generally cannot handle late registration unless it is itself a clerk or satellite office. Details are available from the state’s registration guidance.

Can I drop off an absentee ballot at an early voting site?
Yes. Michigan guidance allows a completed absentee ballot to be taken to an early voting site for verification and tabulation during the early-voting period. You can also surrender an absentee ballot there and receive a replacement if you want to vote in person instead. For most voters, the clerk must receive an absentee ballot by 8 p.m. Election Day, while early-voting-site submission is available only through the site’s final early-voting day. Detroit voters cannot tabulate absentee ballots at Detroit polling places on Election Day; use a drop box or return the ballot to the local clerk instead. Consult the state’s absentee voting guidance for return rules.
