Open the video’s description and select Show transcript. If the video has captions, its transcript appears beside playback; select a line to jump to that moment. Some videos also offer transcript search. YouTube’s viewer instructions are in its Help article View video transcripts.
Open and use a YouTube transcript
- Open the YouTube video.
- Expand or open the video description, then select Show transcript.
- Read along as the transcript scrolls with playback. Select a caption line to jump to that part of the video.
- If a search field appears in the transcript panel, enter a word or phrase to find it. Search is available on some videos, not all.
This is useful for finding a moment in a long video, such as a walkthrough tip, a boss strategy, or a particular item name, without replaying the whole video. YouTube also says transcripts can help viewers find chapters where available and identify people, places, and affiliate products mentioned in a video.
Get a transcript on a phone
Look in the video description for Show transcript. The exact placement of controls can vary as YouTube updates its mobile interface, so there is no single tap sequence that applies to every device and app version. If you do not see the option, check whether captions are available for that video.
Why “Show transcript” may be missing
YouTube’s transcript feature depends on captions. A creator may have added captions, or YouTube may have generated automatic captions using speech recognition. Automatic captions are not available for every video: availability depends on the video and speech-recognition support. YouTube’s Help article View video transcripts does not establish a universal fix for every platform, account, or interface state when the control is absent.

- Check whether the video offers captions.
- If captions are not available, the built-in transcript may not be available either.
- If you need text for a video without captions, a third-party transcription service may be an option; check its supported video types, output formats, privacy terms, and current costs before using it.
Download or export the transcript
YouTube’s viewer instructions explain how to view and navigate a transcript, but do not establish a universal viewer-side download or export control. If you need a file, check whether a third-party service currently supports the video and the format you need. Vendor descriptions of their own tools are not independent proof that a service works for every video.
If you manage the video: add captions in YouTube Studio
These creator-side options apply to videos you manage; they do not let viewers add captions to another channel’s video. YouTube documents the workflow in its Help article Add subtitles & captions.

- Upload a subtitle file: You can upload a supported file with or without timing.
- Auto-sync: Enter the transcript in the language spoken in the video. The feature requires a language supported by YouTube’s speech-recognition technology. YouTube does not recommend auto-sync for videos longer than an hour or those with poor audio quality.
- Type captions manually: Enter the caption text yourself in YouTube Studio.
YouTube says automatic captions, when available, are created in the video’s default language.
Check important wording against the audio
Automatic captions are produced with speech recognition, and YouTube’s reviewed Help material does not publish a general accuracy percentage. For a game title, character name, item, number, quotation, or instruction that matters, replay the relevant segment and compare the spoken audio with the transcript rather than treating the text as definitive.
