To get a Trial Explorer Map, trade with a Cartographer Villager who has reached Journeyman level. The map is an opportunity in that villager’s trades, not a guaranteed offer. When you obtain one, use it to head toward a nearby Trial Chamber.
Get a Trial Explorer Map from a Journeyman Cartographer
- Find a Cartographer Villager, or create access to one in your world.
- Trade with the Cartographer until it reaches Journeyman.
- Check the villager’s trades for a Trial Explorer Map. The Minecraft 1.21 release notes describe the map as an opportunity at Journeyman level, so not every Cartographer is guaranteed to offer it. If it is missing, the official sources do not establish a universal way to refresh or guarantee the offer.
- If the map is offered, complete the trade to get it.
Minecraft’s official Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21 notes document the same core method: a Journeyman Cartographer may trade the map. They do not establish a single price, stock quantity, or trade probability that applies across current versions.
Use the map to find a Trial Chamber
The Trial Explorer Map points toward a nearby Trial Chamber. Follow its guidance while exploring; the map identifies a direction, but does not transport you into the structure. Trial Chambers are underground structures in the Overworld, as described in Minecraft’s official Trial Chamber article.
Java, Bedrock, and version notes
The documented Journeyman Cartographer route appears in both the Java Edition and Bedrock Edition 1.21 release notes. Those sources do not establish a difference in the core method between the two editions.

A separate reference to Trial Explorer Maps in Abandoned Camp maps appears in snapshot information, not as a confirmed stable-release method for every player. Unless you have verified that route for your exact version, use the Journeyman Cartographer trade described above.
