For Minecraft: Java Edition, create a separate installation in the Minecraft Launcher and select the older release from its Version list. Back up any world before opening it in that release: Minecraft warns that using a current world in an older version may permanently damage it. The documented steps apply to Java Edition, not every Minecraft platform.
Get an older Java Edition version in the Launcher
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Installations.
- Select New.
- Name the installation, then choose the release you want from the Version list.
- Select Create.
- Return to the Launcher landing page, select the saved installation, and launch it.
The Launcher defaults to the current game version. A separate, clearly named installation makes it easier to choose the intended release without confusing it with your usual setup. Minecraft’s instructions describe this workflow for Java Edition: Change Game Versions for Minecraft: Java Edition.
Back up worlds before opening them
Copy the world and keep the backup separate before trying to open it in an older release. Minecraft warns that a current world opened with an older game version may be permanently damaged. Use the older installation with a separate copy, not the only copy of a world you care about. See Minecraft’s world-backup guidance.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different version paths
The Launcher procedure above is documented for Java Edition. Minecraft lists Java Edition for Windows, Mac, and Linux; Bedrock is offered across Windows PC, mobile devices, and consoles through their respective storefronts. The cited support guidance does not establish a general way to select arbitrary older Bedrock releases on those platforms, so do not assume the Java Launcher steps will work for Bedrock. Check what you own on PC
If you are unsure which PC edition is tied to your account, sign in to the Minecraft Launcher or Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account used to purchase the game. Minecraft says eligible PC owners have Java and Bedrock bundled; its ownership guide explains how to check.
Consider safety before using an older release
Minecraft says versions earlier than 1.16.4 do not include its safety features and recommends using the latest version for security fixes and player-safety updates. That matters especially for online play; choose an older release only when you have a specific compatibility or gameplay reason. Read Minecraft’s player-safety guidance.

Operating-system note for Java players
Minecraft’s Java system-requirements page states that, as of March 2025, Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 is required to access online play and continue receiving Minecraft updates through the Launcher.
