To get an orange tabby, look for a cat that already has the coat at a local shelter, rescue, or responsible source. Orange coloring is inherited; the sources here do not support changing a cat’s coat to orange. If you mean how the coloring develops, orange is a pigment trait and tabby describes the markings that remain visible on orange cats.
How to find an orange tabby cat
Start with shelters and rescues in your area, and check their current listings or contact them directly. Availability changes locally, so no particular cat or listing can be promised. You can also ask a responsible source whether a cat’s coat appearance is expected to remain as described, especially if the markings are subtle.
Choose the individual cat on more than color. Consider the cat’s health information, temperament, age, and whether it suits your household. A particular breed or sex is not required to find an orange tabby, and the available sources do not show that genetic testing is necessary for adoption.
What “orange tabby” means
Orange describes coat pigment; tabby describes a pattern, such as stripes, spots, or swirls. Orange pigment does not erase tabby markings. The markings may be faint or hard to distinguish in some cats, but UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory notes that sex-linked red/orange cats exhibit tabby patterning whether they are agouti or non-agouti (UC Davis VGL: Agouti).

How cats inherit orange coloring
Orange is a sex-linked inherited trait. A 2025 study in Current Biology identified a 5-kilobase deletion associated with sex-linked orange coloring. The deletion leads to melanocyte-specific expression of ARHGAP36, which is linked to reduced expression of genes involved in producing dark eumelanin and a shift toward red-yellow pheomelanin (Kaelin et al., Current Biology (2025)).
Why orange males are more common
Males usually have one X chromosome, so an orange allele on that chromosome can produce an orange coat. A female generally needs orange alleles on both X chromosomes to be fully orange. When a female has an orange allele on one X and a different color allele on the other, random X-inactivation can produce the mosaic patches seen in tortoiseshell and calico cats. That patching is distinct from tabby stripes, spots, or swirls: one describes color patterning across pigment-cell lineages, the other the cat’s coat markings.

Why orange cats show tabby markings
The orange trait changes which pigment is visible, not whether the cat has a tabby pattern. UC Davis VGL explains that agouti signaling is involved in switching between eumelanin and pheomelanin along a hair shaft. In non-agouti cats, ordinary tabby markings can be difficult to see; orange cats nevertheless show tabby patterning, sometimes faintly.
The 2025 study reported that its 5-kilobase deletion matched orange coat color in a further 188 cats: 145 orange, six calico or tortoiseshell, and 37 non-orange. It also found 13-fold higher ARHGAP36 expression in orange than non-orange skin in a small comparison of four cats per group. These figures describe the study’s molecular findings, not the odds of finding an orange cat at a shelter.
