There is no universal cape unlock in Minecraft: you must meet the requirements for a specific cape, and availability may depend on the promotion, account, and edition. In Bedrock Edition, equip an owned cape from Dressing Room. Java Edition uses Skin Customization for supported capes; a cape available in one edition does not necessarily work in the other.
How to get a cape in Minecraft
Start with the official instructions for the particular cape you want. Cape offers may require eligible play on a Microsoft account, signing in during a promotion, redeeming a code, or participating in an event. Check the offer’s eligibility, supported editions, account requirements, and deadline before taking action. Minecraft’s current Dungeons II promotion and code redemption page illustrate how requirements differ.
Hero Cape: qualifying Dungeons activity
Minecraft says players with Minecraft Dungeons activity associated with their Microsoft account can qualify for the Hero Cape by playing Minecraft Dungeons II on that same account. The reward is granted after Dungeons II detects the eligible activity, and processing may take time. The promotion says qualifying activity can come through Game Pass, local co-op participation, or another eligible play session; purchasing Minecraft Dungeons outright is not strictly required according to the promotion description. After the reward is granted, the cape is available in Java and Bedrock when you use the same Microsoft account. Follow the official promotion terms for current eligibility.
Twisted Cape: Dungeons II preorder
The Twisted Cape is described in the current official promotion as a Minecraft Dungeons II preorder reward. Eligibility depends on a qualifying preorder and confirming or redeeming the reward on the associated account. Check the promotion page for the applicable preorder terms and claim steps.

Common Cape: dated sign-in promotion
Minecraft’s announcement says the Common Cape was granted once to players who signed into Bedrock Edition with a Microsoft account after the promotion began on May 6, 2025, and that it would remain attached to that account. This is a dated promotion, not a general ongoing unlock; consult the official announcement for its terms.
Codes and event rewards
Eligible codes are redeemed through Minecraft’s official redemption page, which lists cape promotions when they are active. The Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue cape requires a 25-character code, which must be redeemed no later than 60 days after the closing date of the tour city attended. The page has also listed the Aurora Cape as a Twitch or TikTok WatchTime Quest reward; check the live listing and any end date rather than assuming either offer is still open.

Older cape offers that are no longer open
- Vanilla Cape: The eligibility window covered players who owned both Java and Bedrock Edition for PC on one account before June 6, 2022. The announcement said it would appear automatically in Dressing Room or Skin Customization. This is historical eligibility, not a new claim route. - Copper Cape Quest: Minecraft’s 2025 event included Bedrock statue placement, Twitch or TikTok viewing quests, and an in-person code giveaway. Its stated code redemption deadline was November 19, 2025, so that route has expired. See the official event article.
How to change or equip a cape in Bedrock Edition
- Start Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and select Dressing Room.
- Open the three-line menu in the upper-left corner.
- Browse the character customization sections, select the cape, and equip it.
If the cape came from Marketplace content, Minecraft Help also documents Marketplace > My Library > Owned (or Marketplace Pass, where applicable): select the content and choose Equip when that option appears. Menu labels can shift with game updates. See Minecraft Help’s Marketplace instructions.
Choose the character you want to wear it
Minecraft’s Character Creator FAQ says Bedrock capes can be equipped on a custom skin, Marketplace skin, default skin, or Character Creator character. You do not need to make a new Character Creator character just to use a cape.

How to change a cape in Java Edition
For capes supported in Java, open the game’s skin customization controls and select the cape there. Minecraft’s Vanilla Cape announcement says an eligible cape should appear automatically in the Java Skin Customization menu. The precise availability and menu option depend on the cape: follow that cape’s official instructions and confirm you are signed in to the account that earned it.

Not necessarily. Cape compatibility is specific to the reward. The Dungeons II promotion says its Hero and Twisted capes are available in both Java and Bedrock after the reward is granted on the relevant Microsoft account. By contrast, Minecraft’s Character Creator FAQ says a Java Edition cape could not be equipped in Bedrock through the cross-edition route described there. Check the terms for your particular cape rather than assuming it transfers.

What to check if your cape is missing
- Account: Make sure you are using the Microsoft account that met the reward conditions, especially for a cross-game promotion.
- Grant processing: Launch the game that grants the reward and allow time for the entitlement to appear; Minecraft notes that Dungeons II reward processing may take time.
- Code or deadline: Check the code format, redemption steps, and expiry information on the official redemption page. Event codes can expire.
- Edition: Confirm that the cape is supported in the edition you are playing; Java availability alone does not establish Bedrock availability.
- Bedrock menu: For an owned Bedrock cape, return to Dressing Room and look through the character customization sections.
