How to Get and Equip Fortnite Item Shop Skins

Buy a skin from Fortnite’s Item Shop, equip it from Locker in the lobby, and understand the options if you purchase the wrong item.

To get a Fortnite Item Shop skin, buy it from the Item Shop in Fortnite or at fortnite.com/shop. To equip an owned skin, go to the lobby, open Locker, select the skin, then use Back to return. Check the displayed V-Bucks price before confirming: prices and the current shop rotation are not established here.

Buy a skin from the Item Shop

Epic supports two ways to shop: from inside Fortnite or through its online Item Shop at fortnite.com/shop. The cited guidance does not establish a difference in catalog or price between the two, so choose the route that is convenient for the account you use to play. Both routes are ways to make a purchase; neither is a separate way to equip a cosmetic.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open the shop. Launch Fortnite and select Item Shop, or visit fortnite.com/shop and sign in to the account you use for Fortnite.
  2. Choose a skin. Browse the offers currently shown. Shop contents rotate, so a particular skin may not be available when you look. If you do not see the skin you want, the available information does not establish when or whether it will return.
  3. Check the offer. Review the item and the V-Bucks amount displayed on its purchase screen. No single price applies to every skin, and Epic’s cited guidance does not specify a universal purchase prompt or price.
  4. Confirm only if you want the purchase. Follow the confirmation steps shown in Fortnite or the online shop. Once purchased, the cosmetic is owned on the account used for the transaction.

Take a moment to verify both the selected offer and the displayed amount before confirming. The shop may show different kinds of offers, and the available information does not establish that every offer is an individual skin. Read the offer you selected rather than assuming a price, contents, or prompt based on a different item.

Buying and equipping are separate actions. The purchase obtains the cosmetic; the Locker is where you select an owned cosmetic for use. You do not need to buy another item or use a separate claim code to equip a skin bought in the Item Shop. If you are using the online shop, make sure you signed in to the Fortnite account on which you want to make the purchase.

In-game Item Shop or online Item Shop?

The in-game route is convenient if you are already playing and want to browse from Fortnite. The online route lets you visit fortnite.com/shop and sign in to your account outside the game. Epic’s cited instructions confirm both purchase routes, but do not establish that one has a different catalog, price, or purchase advantage. Choose based on where it is convenient to review the offer and account context. In either case, check the actual offer and V-Bucks amount shown before confirming.

Equip the skin you bought

After you own a skin, equip it from the lobby. Epic’s support instruction is: “Access your Locker from the lobby.” The steps are short, but keep the sequence in mind: go to the lobby, open Locker, select the cosmetic, and use Back to leave that selection.

  1. Return to the Fortnite lobby.
  2. Open Locker.
  3. Select the skin or cosmetic you want to use.
  4. Use the on-screen Back control to leave the selection and return to the lobby with the cosmetic selected.

Epic’s support steps describe selecting the item or cosmetic and clicking back. The exact button used for Back can vary by device or control setup; use the control shown in your game rather than relying on a platform-specific button name. If you are unsure which control is Back, follow the on-screen label in your current interface.

The Locker step is for selecting a cosmetic you already own, not for buying it. If you cannot find a skin among the offers in the Item Shop, that does not mean it can be equipped from Locker; the purchase step must come first. Conversely, if you have already purchased the skin, you do not need to revisit the shop just to select it. Return to the lobby and look in Locker.

If you bought the wrong skin

Epic provides two self-service ways to reverse certain V-Bucks purchases. They have different time limits and conditions; a Return Ticket is not the same as the short Cancel Purchase option. Epic describes Cancel Purchase as a way to cancel or undo a Fortnite Item Shop purchase made with V-Bucks if it was bought by mistake. Check the applicable option promptly, because the two routes have different deadlines and use restrictions.

Option When it may apply Key condition or cost
Cancel Purchase Within 24 hours of purchase The item must not have been used or equipped in any game mode. Each item can be canceled only once.
Return Ticket For eligible items purchased within the last 30 days, including after the 24-hour cancellation period Uses one of your limited Return Tickets. Eligible purchase types and account ticket balance matter.

These time limits and conditions are described by Epic Games Support. If you are considering a reversal, avoid using or equipping the item first: use or equip activity can make Cancel Purchase unavailable during the 24-hour period. A Return Ticket may still be an option for an eligible purchase, subject to its separate rules. The Return Ticket route is not an automatic extension for every purchase; the item must be eligible, fall within the 30-day purchase window, and you must have a ticket available.

Cancel or return through Fortnite

  1. Open Fortnite and select your Player Icon.
  2. Open the menu, then choose Support and Refunds.
  3. Select Return or cancel purchase.
  4. Choose the item and follow the confirmation steps shown.

This route takes you through the support and refunds area in Fortnite. The labels above are the current labels in Epic’s support instructions; interface labels can change. If the menu looks different in your version, follow the options presented in-game rather than assuming a control name that is not displayed.

Cancel or return online

  1. Sign in at fortnite.com/shop with the account that made the purchase.
  2. Open the Player Icon, then choose Return and Cancel Purchases.
  3. Select Show Purchases, choose the item, and follow the confirmation steps.

The online process also begins with the account that made the purchase. If an item or purchase is not shown, do not assume that a different account has the same purchase record; verify the account you signed into. The two self-service routes are alternative ways to reach the return process, not two separate refunds for one item.

Return Ticket limits and excluded purchases

Epic says accounts start with three Return Tickets, receive one additional ticket every 365 days, and can hold no more than three at a time. The annual addition does not let an account hold more than three tickets, and Epic Support cannot grant extra tickets. Because tickets are limited, consider the balance shown on your account and whether the purchase qualifies before using one.

Some purchase types are excluded from these self-service return options:

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online
  • Passes, pass levels, and premium reward tracks
  • Gifted purchases and cosmetic bundles
  • Level Up Quest Packs
  • Save the World loot llamas, event items, and weekly items
  • Purchases made in developer-made islands

If a purchase is excluded, or Fortnite does not offer the relevant return option for it, do not assume it can be reversed through these steps. The listed exclusions matter even if a purchase was recent: the 24-hour and 30-day limits do not make an excluded item eligible. Check the purchase option available for the specific item rather than relying only on how recently you bought it.

When returned V-Bucks do not appear

Epic says refunds are usually returned within a few minutes. If the V-Bucks are not visible, first check that you are viewing the account that made the purchase and check the relevant platform balance. If the purchase was paid from a platform balance, the returned amount may go back to that balance rather than to the shared V-Bucks wallet.

This means the place to look can depend on how the purchase was paid for. Check the account and platform context before concluding that the return failed. Epic’s guidance says “usually within a few minutes,” not that every balance updates in exactly the same way or at the same moment.

What you need to buy or equip a skin

You need access to Fortnite and its Item Shop to buy an offer, and access to Locker from the lobby to equip an owned cosmetic. You do not need a V-Bucks gift card to equip a skin. A gift card is only a possible way to fund an account: Epic’s terms recognize physical or virtual gift cards that may add credits to an Epic account. Availability and compatibility depend on the card and region; the cited information does not establish current stock for any particular seller or that a particular card works in every country.

Do not confuse funding with equipping. Having a card does not select a skin in Locker, and no card is required to select a skin you already own. If you need a funding option, check the terms and compatibility for the card available to you instead of assuming that every listing or region is supported.

What is the difference between Cancel Purchase and a Return Ticket?

Cancel Purchase has a 24-hour window and requires the item to remain unused and unequipped. A Return Ticket may apply to an eligible purchase made within the last 30 days, including after the cancellation window, but it uses one of a limited number of tickets.

How many Return Tickets do I get?

Epic says each account starts with three, receives one every 365 days, and can hold up to three at a time. Epic Support cannot grant extra tickets. Some purchase types are excluded from these self-service return options.

Do I need a V-Bucks gift card to equip a skin?

No. A gift card may be one way to add credits to an Epic account, but equipping an owned skin is done in Locker from the lobby. Card availability and compatibility depend on the card and region.

Where do returned V-Bucks go?

Epic says refunds are usually returned within a few minutes. Check the account that made the purchase and the relevant platform balance. If you paid from a platform balance, the return may go back to that balance rather than to the shared V-Bucks wallet.

The Bottom Line

Buy an available skin through Fortnite’s Item Shop or fortnite.com/shop, review the displayed offer and V-Bucks amount, then equip the owned cosmetic from Locker in the lobby. If you bought the wrong item, check Cancel Purchase within 24 hours while it remains unused and unequipped; eligible items may instead qualify for a Return Ticket within 30 days, subject to ticket limits and exclusions.
