Their main purpose is to serve as tributes for boss encounters: you place the artifacts required for a particular boss and difficulty, along with the required trophies or other tribute items, at an obelisk or boss terminal. You can also display them on an Artifact Pedestal. The exact artifact, cave, tribute combination, carrying behavior and respawn time depend on the map, game version and server or single-player settings.

What artifacts are and why you need them
Artifacts are unique progression items rather than ordinary crafting materials. The ARK Official Community Wiki currently lists 21 artifacts across the game, but no single map contains the complete set. Each map places a different selection in its own caves or special locations, so an artifact’s name alone is not enough to plan a run; you must also know which map you are playing.

Most artifacts are inside caves. A few are placed in remote or unusual environments, including deep underwater areas and Wyvern lairs. These exceptions matter because a cave-focused plan may not provide the equipment, creature or travel time needed for an exposed or aquatic location.
The main use: boss tributes
Artifacts are primarily used to activate boss encounters. At the appropriate obelisk or boss terminal, you submit the artifacts listed for the boss and selected difficulty together with the required creature trophies and any other tribute items. The list is not universal: it changes with the boss, map and difficulty. A set that works for one encounter cannot be assumed to work for another.

The secondary use: display
An Artifact Pedestal lets you place an artifact as a decorative trophy. The pedestal gives the displayed item distinctive lighting, making it useful for a trophy room or base display. Displaying an artifact does not substitute for the copy required in a boss tribute; keep track of which copies are reserved for progression.
Choose the correct artifact before you travel
The most common preparation error is beginning a cave run before confirming the target tribute. Start with the boss encounter you intend to activate, then work backward to the map and artifact.

- Identify the map. Artifact locations and available types differ between maps.
- Identify the boss and difficulty. Open the tribute requirements for that exact encounter. The required artifact combination can change when you change difficulty.
- Make a collection list. Record every artifact, creature trophy and other item required. Treat the list as a checklist rather than assuming that collecting one artifact completes the requirement.
- Confirm the terminal or obelisk. The submission point must support the encounter you selected. Plan your return route and storage around that destination.
This order prevents a long expedition for an artifact that is not part of your intended tribute and exposes missing trophies before you enter a dangerous location.
Find caves and artifact coordinates
Use the official cave and artifact index for the map you are playing. Its map pages connect artifact names with cave entrances and artifact coordinates, which is more reliable than navigating from a generic list that mixes maps.
What to record from the map page
- Entrance location: the point where you must begin the approach, which may differ substantially from the artifact’s interior coordinate.
- Artifact coordinate: the location of the container or pickup inside the cave or remote area.
- Environment: whether the route is terrestrial, underwater or associated with a Wyvern lair.
- Return path: whether the route back to the entrance is straightforward or likely to be blocked by creatures, terrain or limited visibility.
Coordinates are map-specific. A coordinate copied from another map, or from a different cave on the same map, can send you to an apparently empty location. Verify the map name and artifact name together before departing.

Compare routes instead of choosing by distance alone
If several artifacts are needed, plan the order of your runs using the factors below. The shortest route on the surface may be the most expensive or dangerous once the interior hazards are considered.

Prepare for the location, not just the pickup
An artifact container is the endpoint of the expedition, not the whole challenge. Before leaving, match your preparation to the cave’s hazards and the travel route shown on the map page.
Bring a suitable tame and equipment
Choose a tame that can safely move through the relevant terrain and survive the creatures reported for that location. A route through an underwater area needs an aquatic solution; a route associated with a Wyvern lair needs a plan for that threat; a narrow cave may restrict what can enter. Do not assume that the tame used for one cave will fit another.
Carry equipment appropriate to the environment, enough supplies for the approach and return, and a way to recover if the first attempt fails. Leave room to secure the artifact and any items recovered during the run. If you are transporting a tame or supplies over a long distance, establish a safe staging point before entering the cave.
Use a simple pre-run checklist
- Correct map, artifact and boss difficulty confirmed.
- Artifact entrance and interior coordinates recorded.
- Suitable tame selected for the cave’s terrain and creatures.
- Equipment and supplies matched to the environment.
- Return route and destination obelisk or boss terminal identified.
- Storage or a safe staging location available for the artifact after extraction.
- Remaining tribute requirements listed so the artifact is not mistaken for a complete boss set.
Step-by-step: collect an artifact
- Open the map’s artifact or cave page. Confirm the artifact name, entrance and interior coordinate for the map you are playing.
- Travel to the entrance. Use the route that matches your selected tame and equipment. Avoid treating the surface coordinate as the final destination.
- Enter and navigate the hazards. Move deliberately through hostile creatures, environmental dangers and difficult terrain. Keep the exit route in mind; reaching the container is only half the run.
- Locate the artifact container. Use the interior coordinate and the map’s cave layout to find the container rather than searching every passage at random.
- Loot the artifact. Confirm that the item entered your inventory or was secured by your carrying method before moving away from the container.
- Leave with the item protected. Follow the return path, avoid unnecessary fights and put the artifact in a safe storage location when you reach a secure base or staging point.
- Update your tribute checklist. Mark only this artifact as complete. Check the boss’s exact requirements again before collecting the remaining trophies and items.
If the container is empty or the item does not appear, stop and verify the map, cave and artifact name before assuming the game has deleted it. A location mismatch is more likely than a universal artifact failure.

Use artifacts to summon a boss
Once you have the artifacts, assemble the complete tribute set for the selected encounter. The artifacts are only one part of that set; creature trophies and other required items must also be present.
Tribute workflow
- Open the encounter’s requirement list. Check the boss, map and difficulty together. Do not reuse a list from another difficulty.
- Gather every required item. Include all listed artifacts, creature trophies and other tributes. Count copies individually when the list calls for more than one.
- Move the set to the submission point. Bring the items to the appropriate obelisk or boss terminal rather than leaving part of the set in a remote storage location.
- Place the tributes in the terminal interface. Verify the displayed list before committing the submission.
- Select the boss and difficulty. Confirm that the selected encounter matches the checklist you used to gather the items.
- Start the encounter only after the set is correct. A rejected submission indicates a missing, incorrect or mismatched tribute; recheck the exact requirement instead of substituting another artifact.
On most maps, more than one different artifact is required for each boss fight. Because the combination changes by boss, map and difficulty, maintain separate checklists when preparing multiple encounters.
Carrying artifacts and managing duplicates
Carrying behavior has changed across versions, and the documented rules are not a guarantee for every server configuration. The ARK Official Community Wiki records these version-specific milestones:

When transporting several copies, check what your current version and mode permit before entering the cave. If a creature cannot carry multiple copies, plan separate trips or use secure storage between runs. These notes describe version and mode behavior, not a universal promise for every unofficial server or altered setting.
Do artifacts respawn?
Artifact availability is affected by game mode, version and server settings. The documented single-player behavior is a 30-minute respawn, recorded with version 260.0. Treat that as a setting- and version-dependent reference rather than a timer that must apply to every world.

For a repeat run, leave the cave, secure the first artifact and wait according to your mode’s behavior. If the container remains empty after the expected period, check whether the world or server uses different harvesting or respawn settings, whether another player has taken the item, and whether you are at the correct container. Do not infer a universal respawn schedule from one single-player session.
Display an artifact on a pedestal
Place an artifact on an Artifact Pedestal when you want a visible trophy at your base. The pedestal’s distinctive display lighting makes the item easy to identify and turns a progression object into decoration.
Reserve the copies needed for the next boss tribute before decorating. If you have only one copy and the artifact is required for an imminent encounter, displaying it can create an unnecessary retrieval step. A repeat cave run may be needed when your world does not immediately provide another copy.

The artifact is not at the expected coordinates
Confirm that the coordinate belongs to the current map and the exact artifact page. Check that you followed the cave entrance rather than travelling only to an exterior coordinate. Remote underwater and Wyvern-lair placements can also be mistaken for ordinary cave locations.
The boss terminal rejects the tribute
Reopen the requirement list for the exact boss and difficulty. Compare every artifact, trophy and other item one by one. A different difficulty or map can require a different combination, and an artifact from the wrong map will not replace the listed item.

You cannot carry another copy
Check your game version and carrying method. Version 267.0 introduced the Otter’s ability to carry multiple copies of the same artifact, while other carrying arrangements may not support duplicates. If your setup does not, store the first copy safely and schedule another run.
The artifact has not respawned
Verify your mode and server settings before relying on the 30-minute single-player note associated with version 260.0. Other settings can change the interval or disable the expected behavior. Also check that another player has not already collected the item.

Return with the same location and route checklist, but improve the staging plan: use a safer storage point, select a tame that fits the terrain and avoid unnecessary fights on the way out. Reconfirm the tribute list before repeating the run so the recovery trip produces the item you actually need.
A repeatable artifact-run plan
For a single boss preparation, use this sequence:
- Choose the boss, map and difficulty.
- Write down the complete tribute set.
- Group artifacts by map and compare cave danger, traversal requirements and distance from the terminal.
- Run the safest practical route first, using equipment and a tame suited to that location.
- Secure each artifact immediately and mark only the collected item complete.
- Collect the required trophies and other tributes.
- Submit the verified set at the obelisk or boss terminal and select the matching encounter.
For repeated boss attempts, keep a written inventory of artifacts already stored, artifacts displayed on pedestals and copies still needed. This prevents a decorative copy or an item reserved for another difficulty from being counted as available.
