“Controller” can mean two different things in Once Human: the old in-game reward item or a physical gamepad. The in-game Controller item was removed in version 1.4.4, so there is no current way to farm it. Physical gamepads are supported; choose a control layout in the game’s current settings.
Can you still get the in-game Controller item?
No. Once Human removed its in-game Controller item in version 1.4.4. The development team announced the implemented changes on March 26, 2025, including that Controller-related features would be removed. Older guides that recommend farming the item describe mechanics that no longer apply.
The update changed how affected rewards were distributed rather than adding a new Controller acquisition route:
- Mod crates that had required Controllers provided their full rewards without them.
- For the affected game modes and loot crates, drop rates for Deviations, Memetic Specialization Memory Fragments, complete weapons, and mod crates were set to match the former “full rewards.” Other reward rates were adjusted as well; this statement does not establish the details for every later mode.
- Nisa, Severin, and the Warband Shop stopped offering Controllers.
- Stellar Planula replaced Controller rewards from certain tasks and Public Crisis Events at a 1:2 ratio, as stated in the version 1.4.4 announcement.
Use the official version 1.4.4 update announcement for the implemented changes. A March 4, 2025 preview had described the planned removal, but the later announcement gives the final details. A third-party guide dated March 17, 2026 still describes the item as available through activities and vendors; that conflicts with the official removal announcement and should not be relied on for current item availability.

How to use a physical controller in Once Human
Physical gamepad support is separate from the removed item. The version 1.1 patch notes, dated August 14, 2024, introduced controller support and said the game automatically detects Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch Pro layouts. They also listed four presets: Default, Left-Handed, Shooter, and Action.
- Connect your gamepad to the device you use to play Once Human.
- Open the game’s current controller or controls settings. Select the detected layout and a preset that suits how you play.
- Check the displayed bindings and adjust them if the current settings allow it. Patch notes are historical, so use the options shown in your own game and platform rather than assuming every mapping remains unchanged.
The version 1.1 notes listed camera mode, weapon and vehicle sticker actions, piano play, and other difficult-to-use features as unsupported at that time. Those were launch-era limitations, not a confirmed list of current restrictions. The version 1.1 patch notes document the original layouts and presets.

- People are strange: we looked through the Internet and collected a load of totally-genuine, totally-weird web searches. So we decided to make a party game out of it.
- Think like a human: each round, you'll hear the first half of an internet search, like 'did dinosaurs...'. It's your job to try and figure out what came next
- Did dinosaurs go to heaven?: The higher your answers rank, the more points you'll score for you and your team - so don't be afraid to think a little weird.
- Easy to learn, quick to play: a party game for adults and teenagers, this one takes about 2 minutes to learn and 20 to play. Recommended for 3+ players and ages 14+.

Why controller mappings may differ
Controller settings have changed since support was introduced. For example, the version 2.2.4 announcement of December 23, 2025, describes separate deadzone settings for sticks and triggers and mapping changes to the Mainstream Shooter preset. That is a reason to check the current in-game menu instead of relying on older button diagrams. See the version 2.2.4 update announcement for those later changes.
