Primeape does not have to defeat them. Once the task is complete, evolve Primeape from its Pokémon detail screen.
The evolution path
Annihilape evolves from Primeape, which evolves from Mankey: Mankey → Primeape → Annihilape. The official Pokémon Pokédex confirms this evolution line (Pokémon Pokédex).
How to evolve Primeape into Annihilape
- Get a Primeape. If you have a Mankey, evolve it into Primeape first.
- Choose the Primeape you intend to evolve. Open its Pokémon detail screen and set it as your buddy.
- Defeat 30 qualifying Pokémon in battle. Each must be Ghost-type or Psychic-type. Primeape does not need to be the Pokémon that defeats them.
- Check the evolution requirement. When the task is complete, return to Primeape’s detail screen and use the evolution option.
Pokémon GO / Niantic’s 2024 announcement states that Primeape can evolve after 30 Ghost- or Psychic-type Pokémon are defeated in battle with Primeape as your buddy, and clarifies that Primeape itself does not have to defeat them (official announcement).
Which battles can count?
The official announcement describes the requirement as defeating the qualifying Pokémon “in battle” but does not enumerate battle modes. Pokémon GO Hub lists Team GO Rocket battles, Raids, GO Battle League matches, and Leader battles as options (Pokémon GO Hub’s Annihilape guide). Treat those as the guide’s examples, not an official exhaustive list.

The official source does not specifically establish whether Ghost- or Psychic-type Pokémon defending gyms count. If you are unsure about a particular mode, check the evolution requirement shown in-game as you make progress.
