Use an in-game brush on an armadillo to collect armadillo scutes. Armadillos also drop scutes periodically, and a dispenser can brush them. The biome list depends on the edition and release version: Java Edition 1.20.5 lists savannas and badlands, while Bedrock Edition 1.20.60 lists savannas.
How to collect armadillo scutes
- Find an armadillo. Java Edition 1.20.5 lists savannas and badlands as armadillo biomes; Bedrock Edition 1.20.60 lists savannas. Check the release notes for your edition and version, because these documented biome lists differ. Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes; Bedrock Edition 1.20.60 release notes.
- Brush the armadillo. Use the in-game brush on it to get scutes. Java 1.20.5 notes also specify that dispensers can brush scutes off armadillos.
- Wait for periodic drops, if you prefer. The official notes confirm that armadillos drop scutes periodically, but do not state the interval or the number dropped per brushing. There is no supported guaranteed farming rate to plan around.
What armadillo scutes are for
Armadillo scutes are used to craft wolf armor, according to the Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes. The notes establish the recipe use, but not an acquisition rate; collect the scutes you need rather than relying on an assumed schedule.
Why an armadillo may roll up
Armadillos can roll up in response to threats, which can interrupt an attempt to brush them. In Java Edition 1.20.5, listed triggers include a sprinting player, a player riding a mount or vehicle, undead mobs, and a mob or player that recently attacked the armadillo. The same notes say an armadillo does not roll up while fleeing, in water, in the air, or on a lead. They specify four seconds without detected threats before it unrolls. See the Java 1.20.5 release notes for that version’s behavior.
Do not treat older snapshot timing as the current rule: Java snapshot 23w51b described the armadillo unrolling after three seconds without a detected threat. Those snapshot notes also said it favored spider eyes. These are snapshot-era details, distinct from the four-second interval in Java 1.20.5. Java snapshot 23w51b notes.

Edition and version notes
The biome guidance above is tied to the named official releases, not a guarantee that every later patch has identical documentation. Bedrock 1.20.60 notes list savannas and confirm periodic scute drops, brushing, and dispenser brushing. Bedrock preview 1.20.80.20 later stated that armadillos and wolf armor were available during normal gameplay in that preview; a preview note does not establish the latest Bedrock patch number.
