You don’t have to restart The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt just because you’ve been away. First, open Load Game and see whether there’s a save you recognize. If one looks promising, load it for a short, low-pressure session and use the journal, map, inventory, and quest markers to reorient. If the save is missing—or continuing feels more stressful than starting fresh—a new game is a reasonable choice, not a requirement.
How do I get back into The Witcher 3?
Make the first session a check-in, not a commitment to finish the game. The aim is simply to find out whether your old progress is available and whether returning to it feels inviting.

- Open Load Game. Inspect the available saves before choosing New Game. You can decide whether to resume or restart after you see what is there.
- Pick a recognizable save. Look for a location, time, or quest state that brings something back to mind. You do not need to select the newest save if another one feels easier to place.
- Give yourself a short reorientation session. Once loaded, check the journal for active quest threads, then look at the map and quest markers. Review your inventory if you need to remember what you are carrying or using.
- Decide afterward. If you feel oriented enough to continue, keep playing. If the old save still feels like a burden, you can stop and consider a restart later.
This is a way to lower the stakes, not a guarantee that every save will be present or that the game will explain every forgotten thread. The official cross-progression instructions direct players to Load Game to access uploaded saves, but they do not establish a universal method for evaluating or recovering every local save.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould I restart The Witcher 3 or continue my old save?
There is no universally right choice. Base it on what you find in Load Game and what kind of return sounds enjoyable to you.

| Question | Continuing an old save may suit you if… | Restarting may suit you if… |
|---|---|---|
| Can you place the save? | The location or quest state feels familiar enough to give you a starting point. | The saves are absent, hard to identify, or all feel like a confusing place to resume. |
| What do you want to relearn? | You would rather refresh your memory in the middle of the story than replay its opening. | You want the story and its systems introduced again from the beginning. |
| How important is continuity? | You want to keep the progress and choices represented by the save you select. | You would prefer to make a fresh run rather than work out where you left off. |
| What happens in a trial session? | A brief look through the journal and map makes the save feel usable. | Even after a short look, returning to the old save adds more friction than enjoyment. |
You can treat the choice as reversible: inspect the old save first, try a short session if it appeals, and restart only if that feels better. A restart is an option, not the price of returning.
What if my save is missing or I want to move it to another platform?
First distinguish a local save on the platform where you played from a cross-progression save intended for use on another platform. The latter is a separate account-linked cloud-transfer path, not proof that every historical save slot has been archived.

Using cross progression
CD PROJEKT RED says cross progression uploads the latest save for every save type. Its support page describes the feature this way: “Your latest saves will be automatically uploaded to the cloud so you can easily pick up where you left off on other platforms.” That means the latest save for each type, not a complete cloud copy of every older manual save.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Update the game on the platform holding the save.
- Open Load Game and follow the in-game Cross Progression prompt. On PC, the support instructions direct players to connect the game to a CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a save and check that a cloud icon appears beside its name before relying on the upload.
- On the destination platform, connect the same account and look for the uploaded save in Load Game.
On Switch, the support instructions route players through My Rewards before enabling and using Cross Progression. Follow the prompts shown on your own platform; the exact route can depend on platform and game version. If the cloud icon does not appear, do not assume the save has uploaded.

For a PS4-to-PS5 transfer, CD PROJEKT RED’s older support article specifies Patch 4.04 on PS4, account connection through My Rewards, creating a cloud-marked save, then connecting the same account on PS5 and retrieving the save through Load Game. That article predates the September 29, 2026 Remastered release, so check current in-game prompts and support guidance for the versions you are using rather than assuming those older steps cover every current setup.

Not necessarily. In its September 29, 2026 announcement, CD PROJEKT RED said The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is a free upgrade for eligible owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and for owners of the original Switch game on Switch 2. The announcement also says Remastered includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Check your store and platform entitlement: eligibility depends on what you own and where you own it.
