To get better at NYT Connections without spoiling the puzzle, scan all 16 words, explain each candidate group with one consistent rule, and check for decoys before submitting. Afterward, review what misled you. This is a practical routine—not a guarantee of wins—but it helps you slow down where the game is designed to trick you.

Why Connections rewards a second look

Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four. Each puzzle has one solution, but some words can plausibly fit more than one category. That overlap makes a neat-looking set risky if it leaves an awkward word behind. The New York Times describes Yellow as the easiest category and Purple as the trickiest, with editors curating words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. The NYT Help Center’s Connections guide explains the game’s format and rules.

A spoiler-free routine for solving the board

1. Scan every tile before choosing a group

Read all 16 words first. Look for more than obvious subject-based sets: words may share a phrase, have alternate meanings, or connect through wordplay. Keep more than one possible pattern in mind rather than locking onto the first tidy grouping.

2. Say the rule in one sentence

For each candidate set, state precisely what all four words have in common. The same relationship should work for every word. If your explanation shifts meaning halfway through or needs an exception, treat the set as a possibility, not a solution.

3. Look for words that could steal a place

Check whether any word outside your proposed group also fits its rule. Then consider whether choosing these four words still leaves a plausible way to divide the rest of the board into three complete groups. This whole-board check matters because the puzzle deliberately uses words that can appear to belong in multiple categories.

4. Submit when the group holds together

Make a guess when the rule is clear and the other tiles do not reveal a stronger competing fit. Taking time to check is a sensible way to avoid impulsive guesses; it is not a measured guarantee of better results. The goal here is to solve for yourself, not to chase speed.

5. Review the mistake, not just the answer

After you finish, identify what made a wrong grouping tempting: perhaps one word had a second meaning, a phrase connection was easy to miss, or three words looked convincing while the fourth did not belong. Remembering the type of trap is more useful for future boards than memorizing a single day’s categories.

If you are an eligible subscriber, the Connections Bot can show difficulty, category solve order, common mistakes, guess-by-guess analysis, and personal ratings. The stats page includes win rate, streaks, perfect puzzles, and a mistake histogram. Use these features as review tools, not as a substitute for trying the board unaided.

How to practise without giving up the daily puzzle

The daily game is free to play across supported platforms and releases at midnight in your timezone. Signing in is recommended if you want to retain progress across devices. For extra practice, the NYT archive offers boards dating back to June 12, 2023, to All Access and Games subscribers. Archive play contributes to some stats, but not streaks. Check the NYT Help Center for the current access details.

  • Want to protect your daily solve? Try the routine on the current board before opening any hints or answer coverage.
  • Want more reps? Use archive boards if your subscription includes them, and apply the same scan, rule, and decoy checks.
  • Want to learn from a difficult puzzle? Review your guesses and the mistake pattern after you have completed it; use the Bot or stats tools if available to you.

What the available study does—and does not—show

A December 2, 2024 paper by Angel Yahir Loredo Lopez, Tyler McDonald, and Ali Emami treats Connections as a task where plausible associations can still produce incorrect groupings. Its example illustrates a familiar trap: three words suggest a category, but a fourth does not fit, so checking the full board is essential. The paper describes a collection of 358 puzzles and evaluates 100 puzzles; in its no-hints condition, the human evaluators averaged 56%, while the best-performing model result reported was 45%. The study had three human evaluators, which the authors identify as a limitation. These figures describe that study’s setup, not a typical player’s expected score, and they do not prove that this particular routine will improve an individual’s results. Read the paper.
