The challenge is that a word may seem to fit more than one theme, so a plausible set is not necessarily the right one.
What are the rules of NYT Connections?
Find four groups of four items that share something in common. The New York Times Help Center says each puzzle has exactly one solution and is deliberately tricky because words can appear to fit multiple categories. Its official examples include kinds of fish and words that begin with “FIRE.”
The Times says its editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. The categories are color-coded to show relative difficulty: yellow is easiest and purple is trickiest. Green and blue fall between them, but the Help Center does not give those colors more precise definitions or require players to solve in color order.
How to approach the grid
- Scan all 16 words. Look for possible connections, but keep several possibilities in mind rather than committing to the first pattern you notice.
- Test a possible group against the whole grid. Ask whether each word has another plausible home and whether the remaining words form a more complete set.
- Treat a partial pattern as a hypothesis. Overlap is intentional: a grouping can sound convincing while using a word that belongs in another category.
A 2025 paper presented at COLING describes this kind of misdirection with “Normal”: it can suggest a “Status Quo” association, but the intended “Skin Types” group also includes “Dry,” “Combination,” and “Oily.” The paper’s NYT-CONNECTIONS benchmark contains 358 puzzles; that is the dataset size, not a measure of players or game popularity. Read the paper.

Where can you play, and when does the daily puzzle appear?
The NYT Help Center lists the NYT Games app, the Connections website, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the News app as places to play. It says Connections is free on those platforms without registration. An NYT account is recommended if you want to retain progress across devices or platforms. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in your timezone.
What do the archive and Connections Bot offer?
The Help Center describes an archive of puzzles dating from June 12, 2023, to the present for All Access and Games subscribers. Archive plays affect some statistics, but not current or maximum streaks. Connections Bot offers difficulty, ratings, categories, mistakes, and guess-by-guess analysis; the Help Center lists it for All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers. Check the Help Center for current access details, since availability and eligibility may change.

Which game mechanics are confirmed?
The official Help Center page cited here explains the objective, categories, access, and related features, but does not specify how guesses are submitted, how many errors are allowed, or what a “one away” message means. Those details should not be treated as official rules based on that page alone.
