The side mission is the earlier, dependable route: battle Chespin three times in a row, and it joins you afterward. The Wild Zone route is less certain because the encounter is not guaranteed and guides differ on its exact landmark.
Get Chespin early through A Feisty Chespin
Side Mission 7, A Feisty Chespin, is the early acquisition route described by Insider Gaming and Nintendo Life. The mission centers on a Chespin picking a fight with a taxi. Defeat it in three consecutive battles; once it calms down, it joins your team.

Find the mission trigger
The guides describe the trigger using different landmarks. Insider Gaming points to Axi at a taxi rank near Wild Zone 3, after the first three introductory side missions. Nintendo Life places the alley northeast of Centrico Plaza and says the side quests become available at Rank Y. Since those directions and progression details do not match exactly, look for the A Feisty Chespin mission or its relevant taxi/side-mission marker rather than relying on one landmark alone.
Prepare for the three battles
Bring a team that can handle repeated fights without needing to return to heal between them. Nintendo Life recommends Fire-type moves, but neither guide makes a particular team composition a requirement. The key condition is winning all three encounters in succession.

Find Chespin later in Wild Zone 17
Wild Zone 17 is the alternative if you would rather look for a wild Chespin. Insider Gaming says the zone unlocks at Rank C and reports a possible spawn near a tree in its lower area during the day. Nintendo Life instead points to the zone’s dirt mounds and recommends reloading the area if Chespin does not appear.
Because the guides differ on the precise landmark, treat those locations as search tips, not a guaranteed coordinate. Check Wild Zone 17 in daylight, search the lower area and dirt mounds, and revisit or reset the zone if Chespin is absent. The guides do not establish an encounter probability, so there is no reliable number of visits to promise.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.

Which Chespin route should you choose?
| Route | When to use it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A Feisty Chespin | Earlier, through Side Mission 7 | Three consecutive battles; Chespin joins after it calms down. This is the mission-reward route described by Insider Gaming and Nintendo Life. |
| Wild Zone 17 | Later, after the zone is accessible; Insider Gaming says it unlocks at Rank C | A reported wild spawn that may take repeated checks. Insider Gaming and Nintendo Life identify different landmarks within the zone. |
If you want a direct route, pursue the side mission. Choose Wild Zone 17 if you already have access and prefer to search, while allowing for the possibility that Chespin will not appear on your first visit.

No: Nintendo lists Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as the three first-partner choices for the base game, not Chespin. Chespin is obtained through the side mission or the later Wild Zone route.
