In Stardew Valley, the most direct way to get clay is to till soil with a Hoe; digging Artifact Spots is another Hoe-based route. You can also find clay in Clay Nodes and Geodes, receive it as a gift, or buy it at the Desert Festival. Clay is used in several crafting recipes and a few other activities, but it is not required for any bundle.

Six ways to get clay in Stardew Valley

The six methods below group the two gift sources together. The Stardew Valley Wiki also lists a separate festival purchase, making it a useful additional option when the Desert Festival is available.

1. Till dirt or sand with a Hoe

Use the Hoe on tillable dirt or sand to look for clay. This is the simplest method to try when you already have the tool and are exploring areas with exposed soil. The game’s starter Hoe is used for tilling; see the Hoe information and the clay entry for details.

The Stardew Valley Wiki suggests that digging in the Mines may yield clay more often than digging outside them, and notes that the area can be reset. Treat this as a wiki strategy tip, not a published test or guaranteed rate.

2. Dig Artifact Spots

Hoe the worm-like marks known as Artifact Spots. Each spot guarantees an item, but the item depends on location and conditions. The Stardew Valley Wiki lists clay drops of 1–3 pieces and location-dependent chances ranging from 10% to 48%; those figures apply to Artifact Spots, not to ordinary tilling. See the Artifact Spot item and drop details.

3. Mine Clay Nodes at the Ginger Island Dig Site

After reaching the Ginger Island Dig Site, break Clay Nodes there to obtain clay. This is a location-dependent option rather than a method available everywhere on the farm.

4. Process Geodes

Geodes can contain clay, but opening one is not guaranteed to produce it. Clint processes a geode for 25g each, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Blacksmith information. A Geode Crusher can process geodes without that service fee once you have access to one; clay remains only one possible result. The clay entry lists geodes as a source.

5. Receive clay as a Feast of the Winter Star gift

Jas, Leo, or Vincent may give clay as a gift during the Feast of the Winter Star. Because the giver and gift are specific to the festival, this is a seasonal chance rather than a repeatable everyday source.

6. Get a gift from a max-friendship dog

A dog whose friendship with you is at maximum may give you clay. This depends on having a dog and building its friendship; the gift is not assured every day.

Bonus: buy clay at the Desert Festival

At the Desert Festival, Vincent sells clay for one Calico Egg per piece, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s clay page. This gives you a direct purchase option when the festival shop is available and you have the required festival currency.
