Twilight Dunes/Anubis is a dependable high-density target, while a base near a compact cluster or the later Coal Quarry can automate your supply.
Coal is obtained by mining black Coal deposits with a pickaxe. The most reliable early- and mid-game approach is to visit a dense deposit cluster—especially in the desert, such as Twilight Dunes/Anubis—mine the nodes, and return with the Coal before its weight leaves you encumbered. Later, you can automate production with a base near Coal nodes or the dedicated Coal Quarry facility.

Where to find Coal
Coal is not restricted to one location. It appears in several regions, with desert and volcanic areas being the most useful places to search. The Twilight Dunes/Anubis desert is commonly treated as the strongest general-purpose Coal-farming region, while Mt. Obsidian and other volcanic areas are also reported to contain substantial deposits.
These are useful starting points, not permanent guarantees that every node will be in exactly the same place after an update:

| Area | Approximate coordinates | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Bamboo Groves Watchtower | -233, -365 |
A relatively open cluster reported to contain about five Coal nodes; the area can also support a mining base. |
| Anubis Dunes | -128, -81 |
A compact group reported to contain about four nearby Coal nodes. |
| Verdant Brook | 190, -40 |
A compact Coal area often recommended for a dedicated mining base. |
| Twilight Dunes/Anubis desert | Use the in-game map to search the desert | A frequently recommended high-density Coal-farming region. |
| Mt. Obsidian and volcanic regions | Check the local map and nearby deposits | Another major source of Coal, although the terrain and heat can make preparation more important. |
Coordinates in Palworld are map coordinates, and region names can differ between guides. Unlock a nearby Fast Travel point and check the location against your current map before setting out. Third-party map databases may also count nodes differently; one current map guide lists hundreds of marked Coal nodes across multiple regions, including a particularly large number in Twilight Dunes, but that is an estimate from map-marker data rather than an official fixed statistic.
How to mine Coal
- Bring a pickaxe. A Stone Pickaxe is sufficient for an entry-level Coal run. Higher-tier pickaxes make the work faster.
- Travel to a deposit cluster. Desert clusters are usually the most convenient target, although a closer volcanic or Verdant Brook location may save time.
- Hit the black deposits until they break. Collect the Coal that drops from each node.
- Use storage before becoming encumbered. Coal is heavy enough that a long run can quickly reduce your movement speed or prevent further collection.
- Return later for respawns. If you continue using an overworld cluster, wait for its resource nodes to respawn before making another run.
For a large first haul, unlock the nearest Fast Travel point before mining. If there is a usable storage container at a nearby base, deposit Coal there during the run instead of carrying the entire load back to your main base.
Can a Pal mine Coal?
Yes, but the Pal needs the right Mining Work Suitability level. The commonly used Mining progression assigns Mining Level 1 to Stone and Paldium Fragment, Level 2 to Ore and Sulfur, and Levels 3–4 to Coal and Pure Quartz. In practical terms, a low-level Mining Pal may be unable to extract Coal even if it can mine other materials.
Take a Mining-capable Pal into your active party when you want assistance during manual extraction, or assign suitable Mining Pals to a base built near Coal nodes. Always check the Pal’s current work suitability in-game: Palworld’s balance and descriptions can change between versions.

How to automate Coal collection
Option 1: Build a base near Coal nodes
For mid-game bulk production, place a Palbox and base facilities close to a compact Coal cluster. Assign Mining Level 3 or 4 Pals to the base, then add the infrastructure that keeps the operation running:
- Mining Pals with a Coal-compatible Mining level.
- Food production and a feed box so workers do not stop because of hunger.
- Storage near the mining area to shorten hauling paths.
- Transport Pals to move mined Coal into storage.
This setup lets the base gather Coal while you explore or craft elsewhere. Output depends on Pal work speed, available food, storage placement, pathing, and whether nodes are inside the practical working area. A location with more nodes is not automatically better if Pals regularly get stuck or spend most of their time walking.
Option 2: Unlock the Coal Quarry
Later progression includes a dedicated facility identified in Pocketpair’s server-technology data as Product_CoalPit, translated as Coal Quarry. Once it is available in your technology tree, it provides a way to produce Coal without depending exclusively on overworld deposits.
The exact unlock level, recipe materials, and production rate are version-sensitive. Check your current Technology menu rather than relying on an older guide. Staff the quarry with appropriate Mining Pals and place storage nearby to reduce hauling time.

How to carry more Coal
Coal’s weight is one of the main limits on manual farming. Use one or more of these solutions:
- Make shorter trips between the deposit cluster and nearby storage.
- Use a Transport Pal or a mining base so the material does not all have to be carried personally.
- Increase your carrying capacity if your current progression allows it.
- Use a weight-reduction partner effect when available. Turtacle Terra is specifically recommended by some current guides for reducing the weight of Coal and Sulfur, but partner-skill wording and usefulness should be verified in your installed version.
Do not wait until you are already overloaded to decide where the Coal will go. A nearby storage box or dedicated mining base usually improves a farming route more than trying to make one enormous haul.

What is Coal used for?
Coal is primarily a progression resource rather than something worth selling in bulk. Its important uses include:
- Refined Ingots: Coal is combined with Ore in an Improved Furnace to make Refined Ingots.
- Carbon Fiber: Current item references list Coal among the materials used for Carbon Fiber.
- Coal production: Coal is also associated with the Coal Quarry/Coal Mine progression.
- Advanced crafting: Refined Ingots and Carbon Fiber feed into higher-tier equipment and other later-game crafting, including progression connected with ammunition and advanced gear.
Because these recipes can consume Coal quickly, avoid selling a large reserve early unless you already have dependable node access, a mining base, or a Coal Quarry. A small emergency stockpile saves repeated trips once you begin crafting Refined Ingots and Carbon Fiber regularly.

- Beyond the Trail: Use it as a light brick hammer to chip mortar joints and dress stone, or as a hand digging tool in packed clay and rocky garden soil. A handy gift for any rockhound or prospector
Best Coal method by progression stage
| Progression stage | Best approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First access | Mine a nearby desert or volcanic cluster manually with a Stone Pickaxe or better. | Requires little infrastructure and gives immediate Coal. |
| Mid-game bulk production | Build near a compact cluster and assign Mining Level 3–4 Pals. | Reduces repeated expeditions and produces Coal while you do other work. |
| Later progression | Unlock and operate the Coal Quarry, while keeping suitable Mining Pals and storage nearby. | Reduces dependence on overworld nodes and supports sustained crafting. |
Coal farming checklist
- Unlock Fast Travel near the chosen Coal area.
- Bring a Stone Pickaxe or a faster replacement.
- Take a Mining Pal that meets the Coal requirement.
- Plan storage before starting the run.
- Mine a dense cluster instead of traveling between isolated nodes.
- Use a nearby base, Transport Pals, or weight reduction for large hauls.
- Keep enough Coal for Refined Ingots and Carbon Fiber.
- Check the current Technology menu for the Coal Quarry’s actual requirements.
Why a Coal run may not work as expected
My Pal will not mine the Coal
Check its Mining Work Suitability. Coal generally requires Mining Level 3 or 4 in current reference data. A Pal with Mining Level 1 or 2 may be correct for Stone, Paldium Fragment, Ore, or Sulfur but not Coal.
I cannot carry enough Coal
Deposit material in nearby storage, use a Transport Pal, increase carrying capacity, or make smaller trips. Coal’s weight makes a storage-supported route more efficient than a single oversized expedition.
The coordinates do not match my map
Confirm that you are reading the in-game coordinate display correctly, and search the surrounding region rather than expecting a deposit to be precisely on the listed number. Guides may use different regional names, and updates can change resource layouts or map labeling.
My mining base produces very little
Inspect Pal pathing, food availability, storage distance, and whether the Coal nodes are within the base’s practical work area. A smaller cluster with clear paths can outperform a larger cluster that causes workers to get stuck.

Version note
Palworld is version-sensitive and remains an Early Access game. Older guides may show different node counts, recipes, technology levels, or facility names. The most durable advice is to search desert or volcanic Coal clusters, use Mining Level 3–4 Pals, and move to the Coal Quarry when it appears in your current Technology menu. Treat exact coordinates and map-guide counts as representative locations, not permanent guarantees.
