A regular sword gives you string instead; a sword enchanted with Silk Touch is another option named by Minecraft’s official guide. Cobwebs are most often found in abandoned mineshafts and strongholds.
What tool gives you the cobweb block?
The in-game name for a spider web is cobweb. Use shears to break one and collect the block, as described in Minecraft’s Block of the Week: Cobweb.
A regular sword breaks a cobweb into string rather than dropping the block. Minecraft’s guide also names a sword enchanted with Silk Touch as an alternative for collecting cobwebs. The available sources do not establish that this alternative works identically across every current Java and Bedrock version, so shears are the clearest choice.
Where can you find cobwebs?
Search abandoned mineshafts and strongholds, the natural locations identified in Minecraft’s guide. In a stronghold, check the library. In a mineshaft, look around cave spider spawners, where webs may cluster.

#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Those spawner areas can be dangerous: cave spiders may be nearby. Bring a weapon and be ready to deal with them before collecting webs.
How to collect one
- Bring shears if you want to keep the cobweb as a block.
- Explore an abandoned mineshaft or stronghold; check stronghold libraries and the area around cave spider spawners.
- Break the cobweb with shears and pick up the dropped block.
- If you only need string, use a sword instead. Avoid a regular sword if your goal is the cobweb block.
Which method should you use?
| Tool or method | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Shears | Cobweb block, according to Minecraft’s guide. |
| Regular sword | String, not the cobweb block, according to Minecraft’s guide and the Minecraft Wiki. |
| Sword with Silk Touch | Listed by Minecraft’s guide as an alternative for collecting the block; the sources cited here do not provide a complete current Java-versus-Bedrock comparison. |
| Water or piston | String rather than the block, according to the Minecraft Wiki. |
What are cobwebs useful for?
Cobwebs slow most mobs and players, making them useful for traps or for delaying someone entering a base. They can also help prevent fall damage, conceal an entrance, or slow item movement in a redstone setup. Minecraft’s official guide gives about 25 seconds as an approximate example of an item delay; treat that as an illustrative gameplay figure, not a universal timing guarantee.
