How to Get Early Access to New Android Apps and Games in the Play Store

By VGSources Team 7 min read

Google Play has no single universal “early access” switch. Depending on the developer’s setup, you may install an unreleased app, join a beta of an existing app, enter an open or closed test, or pre-register for a future launch.

The right option depends on what you want: install now, test experimental updates, join a private program, or receive a launch notification.

Which Play Store option do you need?

Your goal Use this What happens
Use an app or game before its public launch Early access or open testing You may be able to install it immediately.
Try experimental updates to an existing app Beta testing You receive a newer, less-tested build.
Join a private developer test Closed testing You need an invitation, group membership, or approval.
Know when an unreleased title launches Pre-registration You receive a notification and may qualify for automatic installation.

Google’s consumer definitions and instructions are available in its Google Play Help guide.

Find unreleased Android apps

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Open the For you tab.
  3. Look for Apps in development.
  4. Select an app and tap Install.
  5. Follow any instructions shown on screen.

This section is dynamic and may not appear for every account, country, device, or Play Store version. It also does not list every private or closed test. Developers may instead provide a direct opt-in link.

#1 Best Overall
Inito Fertility Test Strips | Pack of 30 | Compatible with Inito Fertility Monitor | Compatible with Both iOS and Android
  • 30 REFILL STRIPS FOR CONTINUOUS TRACKING - Designed for use only with the Inito Fertility Monitor, works with both iOS and Android through the Inito app.
  • MEASURES 4 KEY FERTILITY HORMONES -The Inito Fertility Monitor measures Estrogen, LH, PdG (urine metabolite of progesterone), and FSH in a single test. This gives you a broader view of your cycle using just one strip.
  • QUICK, SIMPLE AT-HOME TESTING - Collect your urine sample and dip the strip in urine for 15 seconds, insert it into the Inito reader, and review your hormone results in the app in about 10 minutes. The process is built for easy testing from home.
  • HELPS IDENTIFY FERTILE WINDOW AND CONFIRM OVULATION - Inito tracks changes in Estrogen and LH to detect your fertile days, then uses PdG to help confirm ovulation. FSH insights also support monitoring of follicle development across the cycle.
  • ENOUGH STRIPS FOR MULTIPLE WEEKS OF USE - A 30-pack supports ongoing cycle monitoring, though exact strips required in a cycle varies by cycle length and irregularity. For many users with a roughly 30-day cycle, around 15 tests may be needed to track and confirm ovulation. You do not need to buy a new monitor for each cycle to test with Inito.

Find unreleased Android games

  1. Open the Play Store.
  2. Open the New tab.
  3. Under Be the first to play, choose a game.
  4. Tap Install.

The section is controlled by Google Play and participating developers, so its availability and placement can vary. If a game is not shown there, check the developer’s official website or verified social account for a Play Store listing or testing link.

Join a beta for an installed app

The standard Play Store beta path applies when the app is already installed:

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
  2. Choose Manage apps & devices.
  3. Open the Installed section.
  4. Select the app.
  5. Find Join the beta.
  6. Tap Join and confirm.

If Join the beta is missing, the developer probably is not offering a public beta through that listing at that time. Testing may still be available through a closed test, Google Group, sign-up form, or separate opt-in link.

Join an open, closed, or internal test

Open testing

An open test can be available to any eligible Play user, although country targeting, device compatibility, capacity limits, and developer settings still apply. It may be discoverable on the listing or accessible through a shared link.

Closed testing

Closed tests restrict access to selected accounts, email addresses, Google Groups, or approved participants. The developer may send an invitation or provide a link in this format:

https://play.google.com/apps/testing/PACKAGE_NAME

Use the actual link supplied by the developer; do not guess a package name. If the test uses a Google Group, join that group first, then open the opt-in link while signed in to the same Google Account that will install the app.

A closed-test app may not appear in Play Store search, even after you have been invited. Google’s developer documentation explains the differences between open, closed, and internal testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Internal testing

Internal tests are primarily for a developer’s invited testers and are generally distributed through a direct URL rather than normal Play Store discovery. Google documents support for up to 100 internal testers.

A new test or link may take several hours to become available. Google notes that internal-test releases can often appear within minutes, while a first-time app may temporarily show placeholder listing information for up to 48 hours.

Pre-register for a future app or game

Pre-registration is not early access. It reserves your interest in an unreleased title and notifies you when it launches, but it does not normally let you use the app beforehand.

  1. Open the Play Store.
  2. Find an unreleased app or game showing Pre-register.
  3. Open its listing.
  4. Tap Pre-register and confirm if prompted.

Google says pre-registered users receive a launch notification. Eligible devices may also install the app automatically, but auto-install is not guaranteed. Conditions can include device and Play Store versions, app size, network availability, battery state, age controls, account type, and location. Children’s accounts under 13 and managed enterprise accounts are not eligible for pre-registration auto-install under Google’s documented rules.

Google’s consumer help also says a pre-registration cannot be canceled through the normal user flow. See the Google Play pre-registration help page for the current consumer behavior.

Early access versus beta testing

  • Early access: The app or game has not yet launched in production.
  • Beta: The app is publicly available, but you opt into an experimental build.
  • Open test: Any eligible user may be able to join.
  • Closed test: Participation is restricted to selected people or groups.
  • Internal test: A developer-controlled distribution track, usually accessed by invitation or URL.

Developers choose which tracks to use. Not every new title offers early access or a public beta, and a paid app or game does not automatically become free because it is being tested. Google’s testing documentation says paid apps in open or closed tests may still require testers to purchase them, while internal testing can allow free installation.

What to expect from an early build

Early-access and beta software can crash, perform poorly, drain more battery, lack features, behave differently across devices, or become temporarily unavailable. Enrollment may also be limited. A full program can reopen later if places become available.

Protect important information before testing. A version change or uninstall can remove local progress, settings, or customizations if the app does not sync them to an account. Avoid relying on an unstable beta for banking, authentication, medical, business-critical, or other high-consequence tasks unless the provider explicitly supports it.

Send useful private feedback

For eligible early-access and beta apps, Google Play provides a private feedback route:

  1. Tap the Play Store profile icon.
  2. Choose Manage apps & devices.
  3. Open Beta.
  4. Select the app.
  5. Under Private feedback to developer, tap Write feedback.
  6. Provide a rating and written description, then tap Post.

This is private feedback to the developer, not a normal public Play Store review. Include the device model, Android version, app version or build number, exact reproduction steps, connection type, crash frequency, and screenshots or recordings where useful. Mention whether restarting, clearing a session, or reinstalling changes the problem.

Leave a beta and return to the stable version

  1. Open the app’s Play Store listing.
  2. Find the beta-program section.
  3. Choose Leave or the equivalent opt-out control.
  4. Install the production version if Play offers it.

Leaving does not always downgrade the installed package immediately. A stable build may need to be installed separately, or you may need to wait for the next production release. Back up or sync important data before uninstalling: Google warns that uninstalling a beta can remove local progress, settings, or customizations.

Troubleshoot Play Store early access

The early-access section is missing

There may be no eligible titles for your account or region, Google may be showing a different Play Store interface, or the developer may be using a direct link, closed test, or pre-registration campaign. Search for the title and check the developer’s official channels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Join the beta” is missing

The listing does not currently offer a public beta. Look for an official closed-test invitation or opt-in page instead. Do not assume that the absence of the button means the app has no testing program at all.

The test link says access is denied

  • Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Google Account.
  • Join the required Google Group using that same account.
  • Reopen the opt-in link after group membership or approval is complete.
  • Check whether the test is full, country-restricted, or device-restricted.
  • Confirm that the developer has released a build to the testing track.

The app is not searchable or cannot be installed

Closed and internal tests may intentionally be hidden from search. Installation can also be blocked by Android-version requirements, hardware compatibility, country targeting, account restrictions, enrollment limits, or a paused release. Seeing a listing does not guarantee that every device can install it.

Pre-registration did not auto-install

Auto-install is conditional, not guaranteed. You may still receive a launch notification if the device, account, Play Store version, app size, network, battery, age-control, enterprise, or location conditions prevent automatic installation.

The app crashes or loses data

Report a reproducible problem through private feedback and include diagnostic details. If you need the stable version, leave the beta first and use the app’s own backup or sync feature before uninstalling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety and privacy checklist

  • Prefer the Play Store listing or a link from the developer’s official website or verified account.
  • Never provide a Google password or payment credentials to a third party to join a test.
  • Review the listing’s Data safety information and privacy policy.
  • Treat an APK from an unknown file-hosting site as sideloading, not ordinary Play Store early access.
  • Do not switch Play countries or sideload software simply to bypass an eligibility restriction without understanding the account, licensing, update, and security consequences.

Do not confuse Play Store testing with Android Beta

Play Store early access and app betas concern individual apps and games. The Android Beta Program provides preview versions of the Android operating system itself, which can introduce system-wide instability and compatibility problems. Joining one does not grant access to the other.

For developers: the 12-testers rule is not a user requirement

Google requires certain new personal developer accounts created after November 13, 2023 to complete a closed test with at least 12 opted-in testers for 14 continuous days before production access and some features, such as pre-registration, become available. This is a developer-side publishing requirement. It is not a general requirement for an ordinary user who wants to join an app’s beta.

See Google’s testing requirements for new personal developer accounts for the current policy.
