Pokémon GO has eight Eevee evolutions: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon. Every evolution costs 25 Eevee Candy, but the method depends on the form you want.
The safest rule is simple: before spending Candy, check the form shown on the Evolve button. If it displays a question mark, do not evolve that Eevee yet. A visible Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, or Sylveon preview indicates that its special requirement is active. For Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon, an ordinary evolution is random unless you use the corresponding one-time nickname trick.

Updated guide: Pokémon GO can change evolution requirements during limited-time events. When an event-specific indicator or requirement differs from the standard method below, follow the requirement and form shown in the live game.
Every Eevee evolution at a glance
| Evolution | Type | Nickname guarantee | Repeatable method | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vaporeon | Water | Rainer | Normal evolution; random among the three Kanto forms | Use the nickname only if you need to guarantee Vaporeon. |
| Jolteon | Electric | Sparky | Normal evolution; random among the three Kanto forms | Normal evolution cannot reliably target Jolteon. |
| Flareon | Fire | Pyro | Normal evolution; random among the three Kanto forms | Reserve Pyro if you need a particular Flareon. |
| Espeon | Psychic | Sakura | Walk 10 km with Eevee as Buddy, earn two Buddy Candy, then evolve during in-game daytime while Eevee remains your Buddy | The Evolve button should show Espeon. |
| Umbreon | Dark | Tamao | Walk 10 km with Eevee as Buddy, earn two Buddy Candy, then evolve during in-game nighttime while Eevee remains your Buddy | The Evolve button should show Umbreon. |
| Leafeon | Grass | Linnea | Evolve within range of a PokéStop with an active Mossy Lure Module | The Leafeon option should replace the question-mark result. |
| Glaceon | Ice | Rea | Evolve within range of a PokéStop with an active Glacial Lure Module | The Glaceon option should be visible before you confirm. |
| Sylveon | Fairy | Kira | Earn 70 Buddy hearts with Eevee, then evolve when the Sylveon requirement indicator is active | Confirm that the button shows Sylveon. |
How to use the Eevee nickname trick
The nickname method guarantees a specific Eeveelution, but each nickname guarantee is generally available only once per player account. It is most useful for completing a missing Pokédex entry or saving a high-IV, shiny, costume, or otherwise valuable Eevee from a random result.
- Open the Eevee you want to evolve.
- Tap the pencil icon beside its name.
- Change its name to the exact nickname for the desired evolution:
- Rainer → Vaporeon
- Sparky → Jolteon
- Pyro → Flareon
- Sakura → Espeon
- Tamao → Umbreon
- Linnea → Leafeon
- Rea → Glaceon
- Kira → Sylveon
- Return to Eevee’s detail page.
- Check the evolution preview. Confirm only when the intended form—not a question mark—is displayed.
- Tap Evolve and spend 25 Eevee Candy.
If the expected form does not appear, that nickname guarantee may already have been used on the account, the name may not match exactly, or the game may not yet have registered the change. Do not proceed until the correct form is shown.
Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon: the random Kanto evolutions
Without an unused nickname guarantee, a normal Eevee evolution randomly produces Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon. There is no repeatable in-game method that lets you select one of those three forms directly.
That means:
- Use Rainer for a guaranteed Vaporeon, if the account has not used that guarantee.
- Use Sparky for a guaranteed Jolteon, if available.
- Use Pyro for a guaranteed Flareon, if available.
- Otherwise, evolve only when you accept receiving any one of the three.
The normal evolution screen may show the three possible Kanto outcomes as a question-mark result. Treat that as random. Do not spend Candy on an important Eevee hoping that the game will favor the form you want.
How to get Espeon and Umbreon
Espeon and Umbreon use the same Buddy-and-distance method, with the result determined by the in-game time of day.
Espeon
- Set the Eevee you want to evolve as your current Buddy.
- Walk that Eevee for 10 km.
- Earn two Eevee Candy from walking.
- Keep the same Eevee as your active Buddy.
- Evolve during Pokémon GO’s displayed daytime.
- Confirm that the Evolve button shows Espeon, then spend 25 Candy.
Umbreon
- Set Eevee as your current Buddy.
- Walk it for 10 km and earn two Buddy Candy.
- Keep Eevee selected as your active Buddy.
- Evolve during Pokémon GO’s displayed nighttime.
- Confirm that the Evolve button shows Umbreon, then evolve.
Use Pokémon GO’s day/night state rather than your assumption about the real-world time. Weather, darkness outside, or the time on your phone is not the safety check; the evolution preview in the game is.

If Espeon or Umbreon does not appear

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Eevee is still your current Buddy.
- The Buddy distance is at least 10 km.
- You earned the required two Candy from walking.
- You are evolving during the correct in-game day/night period.
- The evolution preview shows Espeon or Umbreon rather than a question mark.
Changing your Buddy before evolving can invalidate the method for that Eevee. If the preview remains wrong, close and reopen the Pokémon’s summary page and recheck the conditions before trying again.
How to get Leafeon with a Mossy Lure
- Find a PokéStop.
- Activate a Mossy Lure Module on it, or find a nearby player who has activated one.
- Move close enough to the PokéStop for the lure’s evolution effect to apply.
- Open Eevee’s summary page while the lure is active.
- Confirm that the Evolve button shows Leafeon.
- Spend 25 Eevee Candy.
You do not need to activate the Mossy Lure yourself. Special Lures benefit nearby Trainers, so coordinating with friends or other players can save everyone resources. Lures normally last 30 minutes, although an event or Season can change their duration.
How to get Glaceon with a Glacial Lure
- Go to a PokéStop with an active Glacial Lure Module.
- Stand within range of the PokéStop.
- Open Eevee’s summary page.
- Check that Glaceon appears as the evolution result.
- Tap Evolve and spend 25 Eevee Candy.
Simply standing near a PokéStop is not enough. It must have the correct Glacial Special Lure active. A Mossy Lure produces Leafeon, not Glaceon, and an ordinary Lure does not substitute for either special module.
How to get Sylveon with Buddy hearts
Sylveon requires 70 Buddy hearts with the Eevee you want to evolve. Hearts can be earned through normal Buddy activities, including:

Buddy heart availability resets at local midnight. Limited-time events can temporarily reduce or otherwise change the usual requirement. For example, Pokémon GO’s Precious Pals event in January 2026 used a temporary 20-heart requirement and stated that the normal requirement would return after the event. If an event is active, the live Sylveon indicator in Pokémon GO takes priority over an old guide or screenshot.

- Check your nickname guarantees. Look for any forms whose nickname trick you have not used.
- Use a nickname strategically. Reserve a guarantee for a difficult-to-replace Eevee, a missing Pokédex entry, or a form you cannot risk receiving randomly.
- Complete Leafeon and Glaceon when a Special Lure is available. Share the Mossy or Glacial Lure with nearby players if possible.
- Start Buddy progress early. Work toward Espeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon while collecting Candy and earning hearts.
- Treat the Kanto trio as random. Use Rainer, Sparky, or Pyro if you need a specific Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon and still have that nickname guarantee.
- Verify every preview. Never spend 25 Candy while the Evolve button shows a question mark.
Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Using a nickname and assuming it works forever | Each nickname guarantee is generally one-time per account. | Check the preview and save unused guarantees for important Eevee. |
| Changing Buddy before evolving | Espeon and Umbreon require the qualifying Eevee to remain the active Buddy. | Keep that Eevee selected until the evolution is complete. |
| Using real-world time | Espeon and Umbreon use Pokémon GO’s displayed day/night state. | Wait for the correct in-game period and check the preview. |
| Standing near an ordinary PokéStop | Leafeon and Glaceon require specific Special Lures. | Use an active Mossy Lure for Leafeon or Glacial Lure for Glaceon. |
| Assuming an event requirement is permanent | Events can temporarily modify Buddy or evolution requirements. | Follow the current in-game indicator and event announcement. |
| Evolving with a question mark displayed | The result may be random or a requirement may be incomplete. | Cancel, recheck the conditions, and evolve only when the intended form appears. |
Optional Eevee fan gear
If you are collecting all eight forms in-game and want a matching physical collectible, an Eevee plush or Eeveelution plush is a relevant fan-gear option. It has no effect on Pokémon GO evolution requirements, so treat it as merchandise rather than part of the gameplay process. Product models, licensing, stock, and availability can change.
Frequently Asked Questions

There are eight: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon.
Recommended Free Tools
Do all Eevee evolutions cost 25 Candy?
Yes. Each of the eight Eevee evolutions costs 25 Eevee Candy, although several also require a nickname, Buddy progress, a time-of-day condition, or a Special Lure.
Can I choose Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon without a nickname?
No. Without the corresponding unused nickname guarantee, a normal evolution randomly produces Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon.
Why does my Eevee show a question mark instead of the evolution I want?
A requirement may be incomplete, Eevee may no longer be your active Buddy, the wrong time or Special Lure may be active, or the one-time nickname guarantee may already have been used. Cancel and recheck before spending Candy.
Can another player activate the Mossy or Glacial Lure I need?
Yes. Special Lures benefit nearby Trainers. Stand within range of the PokéStop while the correct lure is active and verify the evolution preview.

To get every Eeveelution safely, use the eight nicknames only when their guarantees are available, complete the Buddy requirements for Espeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon, use Mossy and Glacial Lures for Leafeon and Glaceon, and accept that the three Kanto forms are random without Rainer, Sparky, or Pyro. Above all, spend your 25 Candy only when the Evolve button displays the form you want.
