To get the modern look many Roblox creators call “Future lighting,” select Lighting in Roblox Studio and set LightingStyle to Realistic. Roblox now marks the old Lighting.Technology property as deprecated; its current documentation describes LightingStyle and PrioritizeLightingQuality as the relevant controls instead. Realistic is the documented choice for Roblox’s most advanced lighting and shadows, but Roblox does not describe it as an exact one-to-one replacement for the former Future mode.
Set the current lighting style in Studio

Open your experience in Roblox Studio.

In Explorer, select Lighting.

In Properties, find LightingStyle and choose Realistic. Roblox documents

If PrioritizeLightingQuality is available, set it to
trueif you want lighting and shading quality to take priority over view distance as rendering quality decreases. This is a preference, not a guarantee that every device will render the scene identically. -
Preview the scene, then adjust other Lighting properties and scene effects to suit its look.

Roblox Studio’s interface can change, and property visibility may vary with updates or rollouts. The Creator Hub’s global-lighting tutorial demonstrates editing Lighting properties and includes a Realistic example.
Why you may not see the old Future setting
Older instructions commonly say to select Lighting and choose Future from the Technology dropdown. Future was a value of the older Technology enum, described by Roblox as its mode for high-fidelity lighting and shadows. Roblox’s current Technology enum reference says that property has been superseded, and the Lighting class reference marks Lighting.Technology deprecated.

So if a tutorial tells you to switch from ShadowMap to Future but you cannot find Technology in Properties, it may be describing an older Studio workflow. Use LightingStyle and PrioritizeLightingQuality where available rather than treating the old dropdown as a guaranteed current control. The current documentation does not promise that the new properties reproduce Future exactly.

These settings control different things; they are not interchangeable presets. The Global lighting guide and Lighting class reference describe their behavior and constraints.

Tune the scene after choosing Realistic
The style setting is only one part of a finished scene. In Lighting, review properties such as Ambient, Brightness, and ClockTime to shape the overall illumination and time of day. Add local light sources where objects need nearby illumination. An Atmosphere object or post-processing effects can further change the scene’s appearance; they are optional artistic tools, not required steps for enabling Realistic lighting.
