In Baldur’s Gate 3, getting heavy armor can mean unlocking proficiency or finding an armor piece. Fighters and Paladins start with heavy-armor proficiency; other routes include specific Cleric domains, the Ranger Knight feature, and the Heavily Armoured feat. For an item, Plate Armour is sold by A’jak’nir Jeera at Creche Y’llek.
How to gain heavy-armor proficiency
Proficiency matters before you equip heavy armor: wearing it without proficiency prevents spellcasting and gives you disadvantage on ability checks, saving throws, and attack rolls. The game reference lists these ways to gain proficiency:

- Choose Fighter or Paladin. Both classes grant heavy-armor proficiency.
- Choose a Cleric domain. Life, Nature, Tempest, and War domains grant it.
- Choose Ranger Knight. Select this Ranger favored-enemy feature to gain proficiency.
- Take the Heavily Armoured feat. It grants heavy-armor proficiency and +1 Strength, up to 20, but requires existing medium-armor proficiency.
Multiclassing by itself does not grant heavy-armor proficiency, so taking a level in another class is not a workaround. These class and feat mechanics are documented in the community-maintained BG3 Wiki’s Heavy Armour reference and Feats reference; they are not official Larian documentation.

- Heavy armor does not add your Dexterity modifier to AC.
- It imposes disadvantage on Stealth checks.
- Check both your character’s proficiency and the armor’s special effect; a higher AC is not the only difference between pieces.
