The safest, intended way into Battahl is to progress Captain Brant’s main quests in Vernworth through Feast of Deception, collect a Border Entry Permit, then travel to Checkpoint Rest Town and show it at the gate. Check which permit you receive: a human character using a Beastren permit must wear a Beastren Mask. You can also enter without a permit by riding a passing carriage or taking a dangerous route through the riverbed.
Get a Border Entry Permit from Captain Brant
- Advance Captain Brant’s main quests in Vernworth until you complete Feast of Deception.
- After the quest, speak with Brant at the Vernworth tavern at night. The permit you receive can depend on how you handled The Arisen’s Shadow: guides report either a Merchant’s Border Entry Permit or a Beastren Border Entry Permit.
- Read the permit’s name before setting out. A Beastren character can present a Beastren permit directly. A human character with that permit must buy and equip a Beastren Mask from Ibrahim’s Scrap Shop in Checkpoint Rest Town. The Merchant’s Border Entry Permit is reported to work without a mask.
Travel to the Checkpoint Rest Town gate
- Take the oxcart from the station on Vernworth’s northwest side to Checkpoint Rest Town.
- From town, follow the road uphill as it loops toward the large checkpoint gate.
- Present your permit to the guard. If you are human and relying on a Beastren permit, keep the Beastren Mask equipped while crossing. GamesRadar reports that a human returning through the gate with that permit needs to equip the mask again.
Oxcarts do not necessarily leave as soon as you arrive: Capcom’s official manual says most depart in the early morning. It also warns that monsters or raids may interrupt a journey.

Can you enter Battahl without a permit?
Yes. Windows Central and GamesRadar describe two permit-free routes. Both avoid the normal permit check, but neither is as straightforward as presenting the right permit.

Passing carriage
Windows Central reports that you can board a passing carriage and cross as it goes through the checkpoint. You may have to wait for the right moment. The guide also reports that entering this way unlocks a trophy for arriving without a permit; it cautions that enemies on the far side can make the arrival dangerous.

Riverbed passage
The riverbed route bypasses the gate, but the encounters make it a combat challenge rather than a quiet shortcut. Windows Central lists a Chimera, Cyclops, two Minotaurs, Knackers, Saurians, Red Wolves, and Goblins. GamesRadar describes armored Saurians, red wolves, a Cyclops, two Minotaurs, zombies, and a Chimera. The enemy lists differ between guides, so plan for a dangerous route rather than relying on a fixed encounter lineup. Both guides report a trophy for reaching Battahl without a permit by an alternate route.

- Choose the permit route if you want the intended, lower-risk approach and have progressed the main story far enough to get the permit.
- Try the carriage if you want to avoid the permit requirement and are willing to wait for an opportunity and handle the arrival.
- Take the riverbed passage only if you are ready for substantial combat on the way around the gate.
