What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To reduce live-stream delay, first decide how much delay your audience can tolerate, then configure the whole delivery chain: platform mode, encoder, packaging, CDN, player and network. A shorter keyframe or segment interval can help, but no encoder setting alone guarantees low end-to-end latency—and reducing buffering can make playback less resilient.
For a gaming stream, distinguish broadcast latency (how long viewers wait to see and hear you) from game-input latency (the delay between your controller or keyboard and the game responding). Streaming settings affect the former, not the latter.
Choose a latency target before changing settings
Measure the delay you actually need to solve. A stream for commentary or a large audience may work with several seconds of delay; live coaching, audience-controlled gameplay or other back-and-forth interaction may need sub-second response. Ordinary segment-based HLS is not necessarily suitable for that kind of real-time interaction.
Latency is the elapsed time from capture to playback, not just the time your encoder takes to send a frame. AWS notes that HLS latency cannot be lower than the fragment duration in its Kinesis Video Streams workflow, and recommends its GetMedia API for use cases needing less than one second. That is a service-specific recommendation, not a universal rule for every HLS implementation.

Set a target and test against it. A low average delay is not useful if viewers frequently rebuffer or the stream becomes unstable.
Choose a delivery mode your platform and player support
Low-Latency HLS for scalable HTTP delivery
Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) adds partial segments, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints and rendition reports to reduce the wait for media while retaining HLS’s scalable delivery model. Apple describes it as low-latency streaming while maintaining scalability. To benefit, the relevant origin, CDN or cache, and playback client must support the low-latency behavior; if part of the chain does not, playback may fall back to regular-latency HLS.
YouTube Live settings are mode-dependent
YouTube’s low-latency option is a platform setting, not a guarantee of a fixed capture-to-viewer delay. YouTube says low-latency streams are under 10 seconds for most viewers; actual delay varies by viewer and conditions. YouTube also says that choosing HLS turns off its Ultra low-latency option, so check the current YouTube Studio settings and the requirements for the selected ingest mode rather than assuming the lowest-latency option is available with every protocol.

YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations from one to four seconds. These are YouTube HLS requirements, not general settings for every platform or protocol. Confirm the current ingest instructions before configuring an encoder or packager.

If the audience must react almost immediately, check whether the destination offers a real-time delivery path and whether its player and supported devices can use it. AWS’s Kinesis Video Streams documentation points to GetMedia for sub-second needs in that service. The available evidence here does not establish a neutral, universal performance comparison of WebRTC, SRT and other real-time architectures, so select a path based on the destination’s supported workflow and test it end to end.
Tune encoder timing without sacrificing stability
Keyframe interval and GOP
Keyframes give players and segmenters points from which they can begin decoding. Shorter GOPs can reduce how long a viewer waits for a suitable frame, but the correct interval depends on the ingest platform and packaging workflow. Follow the destination’s supported keyframe interval rather than copying another service’s settings.

As service-specific examples, Amazon IVS recommends a one- or two-second keyframe interval and advises against intervals above five seconds. IVS warns that choosing one second can increase buffering or resolution changes. AWS’s LL-HLS example aligns a one-second GOP with one-second segments and reports about five seconds of end-to-end latency for that workflow. These are examples, not performance promises for other platforms.
Buffers and forwarding
Encoder-side buffering and the route to the platform can add delay before packaging even begins. For Amazon IVS specifically, AWS recommends zero-latency tuning when available, says the VBV buffer should not exceed the average stream bitrate, and recommends sending directly to IVS rather than through third-party forwarding that adds latency. Do not apply those IVS recommendations blindly to another destination; use its current encoding guidance.
A dedicated hardware encoder can be appropriate in a production workflow, but it does not eliminate delay introduced by the network, platform, packager, CDN or player. Software encoding may also be suitable; choose hardware based on production requirements, not as a shortcut around delivery-chain configuration.

Reduce segment and player wait where supported
For segment-based delivery, shorter segments can reduce the time a player waits for the next media unit. But support must be consistent across the encoder or packager, origin, CDN and player. Apple’s LL-HLS features are designed to make media available in partial segments while a full segment is still being assembled; simply lowering a segment-duration value does not implement LL-HLS.
For scale, AWS’s 2024 overview gives a usual regular-HLS latency range of 12–30 seconds, depending on workflow configuration and player capabilities, and says LL-HLS can bring workflows to 5–10 seconds. Its one-second GOP example describes about five seconds. Treat all of these as source-attributed workflow figures, not independent measurements or guarantees for your stream.
On the viewer side, read-ahead buffering protects playback from network variation but adds delay. YouTube puts the trade-off plainly: “The lower the latency, the less read-ahead buffer the video player will have.” A viewer on congested Wi-Fi may experience freezes or quality changes sooner when that buffer is reduced.

Measure the complete path, not just encoder output
- Define the target. Write down an acceptable capture-to-viewer delay and identify the devices and network conditions your audience uses.
- Create a visible timing reference. If possible, burn a synchronized clock or timecode into a test feed. AWS recommends using timecode when available to understand latency across workflow stages.
- Record the ingest and playback setup. Note the platform mode, encoder keyframe interval, segment or part duration, player, device and network. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what affected the result.
- Measure viewer playback. Compare the visible capture time with the time shown at playback on representative devices. Repeat on realistic connections; a test from a single wired computer will not reveal every viewer’s conditions.
- Track reliability alongside delay. Record startup delay, dropped frames, rebuffering and quality changes as well as capture-to-viewer delay. Keep the configuration that meets the target without making playback unacceptably fragile.
Troubleshoot a delayed or unstable stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Delay remains high after changing encoder settings | Delay is accumulating downstream, or the chosen platform mode does not support the intended low-latency path. | Check the platform ingest mode, packager, CDN behavior and playback client. Measure capture-to-viewer delay rather than relying on encoder output alone. |
| Low-latency behavior is unavailable on YouTube | The selected ingest mode may impose a constraint; YouTube says HLS disables Ultra low-latency. | Verify the current YouTube Studio mode and its ingest documentation before changing protocols or encoder settings. |
| Playback buffers or changes resolution after lowering delay | A smaller read-ahead buffer leaves less protection against network variation; a shorter keyframe interval may also affect buffering or resolution changes on some services. | Test on representative networks and devices. For Amazon IVS, AWS specifically warns that a one-second keyframe interval can increase buffering or resolution changes. |
| Encoder looks fast but viewers still see a long delay | Packaging, segment duration, CDN/cache behavior or player buffering may account for the remaining delay. | Use a synchronized time reference and inspect each supported stage of the delivery path. |
| Short segments do not reduce viewer delay | The full chain may not support low-latency parts or may be serving regular-latency HLS instead. | Confirm LL-HLS support in the origin, CDN/cache and player, and check whether playback has fallen back to regular HLS. |
