How to get Medalum
To obtain Medalum early, take control of Maelle in the fourth and final solo fight of the Gestral Village Arena tournament and defeat the Stranger. The weapon reward is tied to the character who wins that final duel, so choosing another character can prevent Maelle from receiving Medalum at that point.
If Maelle did not win the final Arena fight, Medalum can reportedly be recovered later by defeating Golgra in a separate one-on-one battle while using Maelle. Treat this as a fallback: guides describe it as more difficult, and some additional encounter requirements reported by community sources still need independent in-game confirmation.
What Medalum does
Medalum is Maelle’s physical weapon in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Its defining feature is that it gives Maelle immediate access to Virtuose Stance, then improves Burn-focused play while she remains in that stance.

Why the level-4 effect matters most
Starting in Virtuose Stance changes Maelle’s opening turn. Without Medalum’s level-4 effect, a stance-focused plan may require an early action to transition before Maelle can access the desired Virtuose rotation. Medalum removes that setup step and gives the weapon its most broadly useful breakpoint.

The value is mainly tempo and access, not a guaranteed damage increase against every enemy. The opening benefit is strongest when your build is already designed around Maelle’s high-damage Virtuose actions. It is less decisive if your strategy frequently changes stances, delays Maelle’s turn, or does not use Virtuose-compatible skills as part of its main rotation.
How the level-10 and level-20 Burn effects work
The two later effects are complementary, but their wording matters:
- Level 10 doubles Burn applied in Virtuose Stance. This concerns Burn that Maelle applies while she is in Virtuose. Do not treat it as a blanket increase to every Burn source in the party.
- Level 20 doubles Burn damage in Virtuose Stance. This strengthens the damage dealt by Burn while the relevant Virtuose condition is active. It is not a permanent, all-purpose damage multiplier for Maelle.
For a Burn-centered rotation, the practical goal is to apply Burn during Maelle’s Virtuose turns and keep the conditions for the damage effect active when the status deals damage. The exact payoff depends on the skills you use, the timing of status application, enemy defenses, and how reliably you can maintain Maelle’s intended stance.

Medalum is most attractive for a Maelle setup with two priorities: early Virtuose access and Burn synergy. Start with the weapon’s level-4 breakpoint, then consider upgrading to levels 10 and 20 if Burn is a central part of the build rather than an occasional status effect.

Build around the whole setup
Medalum does not determine Maelle’s complete performance by itself. Evaluate it alongside:
- Maelle’s selected skills and whether they fit an immediate Virtuose opening;
- attributes that support your preferred damage and survivability profile;
- Pictos and Luminas that improve status application, action economy, critical damage, or stance-dependent play;
- party members who help Maelle apply, extend, exploit, or safely maintain Burn;
- the target’s defenses, resistances, turn order, and vulnerability to your chosen damage plan; and
- your ability to execute real-time dodges, parries, counters, attack rhythms, and free-aim attacks during encounters.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 combines turn-based decisions with real-time combat inputs, so a weapon that looks excellent on paper may perform differently depending on timing and execution. Medalum should be judged by how well it supports your actual rotation, not by its effect text alone.
Is Medalum Maelle’s best weapon?
There is no safe universal answer. Several third-party guides describe Medalum as one of Maelle’s strongest weapons, but that is an evaluation rather than an official ranking or a guaranteed result. Its advantages are clearest when you want to open in Virtuose and build around Burn.

A different Maelle build may prefer another weapon if it gains more from a different stance pattern, attribute distribution, skill rotation, or non-Burn damage plan. Weapon level, Pictos, Luminas, party composition, enemy defenses, player execution, and the game version can all change the comparison. Avoid treating a single damage number or a level-33 database value as a universal benchmark.

Medalum’s reported scaling grades
Third-party databases do not agree on Medalum’s letter-grade scaling. Gamer Guides and Fandom list Defense C and Agility D, while Expedition 33 Hub presents Defense S and Agility A. The official game information available for this guide does not publish a Medalum stat table that resolves the discrepancy.
For that reason, the reliable takeaway is that third-party sources associate Medalum with Defense and Agility scaling, while the exact letter grades remain unresolved. Check the weapon’s values in your own game version before committing a build to one database’s grades.
If you missed the Gestral Arena reward
- Continue until the later optional one-on-one encounter involving Golgra becomes available.
- Select Maelle for the fight.
- Defeat Golgra to pursue the reported recovery route for Medalum.
This route should not be confused with the preferred acquisition method. Winning Maelle’s final Gestral Arena duel is the clearest way to secure the weapon early. Community sources also disagree or remain uncertain about some specific conditions surrounding the Golgra recovery encounter, so rely on confirmed in-game objectives rather than assuming every extra requirement listed in a database is correct.
Can you buy Medalum separately?
No. Medalum is an in-game weapon, not a separate physical product. It is available only within Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The game launched on April 24, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC storefronts including Steam.

Game context
If you are buying the game specifically to play Maelle and collect weapons such as Medalum, look for the edition of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that matches your platform. A physical PS5 edition is the most directly relevant product for readers who want a disc copy; buying the game does not provide Medalum outside the game or guarantee the Arena reward.
Collector editions and replicas
The official Collector’s Edition was described as including the game, a 20.3 cm hand-painted resin Monolith music-box statuette, a 48-page hardcover Expeditioner’s Journal, a SteelBook, and the Digital Deluxe Upgrade Pack. Its official availability was reported as sold out when checked, so stock and regional distribution should be verified before purchase.
The separate official Monolith Set includes the statuette, journal, SteelBook, and collector’s case, but does not include the game. Availability and shipping vary by region.
