How to install Minecraft on Windows 11 or Windows 10

Free ways to play Minecraft legally
Download the free Minecraft Launcher
You can download the launcher at no charge from Minecraft.net or install it through the Microsoft Store. It is a central hub: after signing in, it shows the Minecraft products and services associated with your Microsoft account.
Important: “free launcher” does not mean “free full game.” If the account does not own Minecraft, the launcher will offer the available purchase, trial, or demo options rather than unrestricted access.
Use the official free trial

If you access Minecraft through Game Pass, Realms remains a separate subscription. Decide first how you will obtain the base game, then consider Realms only if you need its private-server features.
Java Edition or Bedrock Edition: which should you choose?
Choose Java Edition if you care most about:
- Community-created mods and mod loaders.
- Java-specific multiplayer servers.
- Snapshots and other Java Edition testing features.
- PC-oriented customization such as user-created skins and modded installations.

Most ownership errors are account mismatches rather than a missing installation. Work through these checks in order:
- Check the launcher account. Open the profile or account area in Minecraft Launcher and confirm the Microsoft account.
- Check the Microsoft Store account. Open the Microsoft Store, select the account icon, and verify that it is the account used to purchase or redeem Minecraft.
- Check the Xbox app account. Sign in to the Xbox app with the account associated with the license or subscription.
- Restart the relevant apps. Sign out and back in, then restart the launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app if necessary.
- Check redemption status. A redeemed code is tied to the Microsoft account used during redemption and normally cannot be moved to another account.
- Reinstall from an official source. If the launcher installation is damaged, reinstall it from the Microsoft Store or Minecraft.net.

- Make sure there is sufficient free storage for the launcher, game files, updates, and worlds.
- Update Minecraft through the launcher or Microsoft Store, depending on the edition and installation route.
- For Java, check the edition-specific launcher and Java memory-allocation guidance before changing advanced settings.
- For Bedrock, use the Microsoft Store/Xbox troubleshooting path if installation or sign-in services fail.
