The fastest dependable Netherite route is a prepared Bastion-and-mining run: secure a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in a Bastion Remnant, then expose Ancient Debris around Y=15 with branch tunnels or controlled explosions. Smelt the debris into Netherite Scrap, combine four scraps with four gold ingots for one Netherite Ingot, and use the template at a smithing table. Beds can clear terrain quickly at low material cost, while TNT is convenient for well-established worlds, but neither has a source-backed universal seconds-per-ingot advantage.

What you need before entering the Nether

Netherite is made from Nether resources rather than mined as a finished ore. The critical block is Ancient Debris. It is blast-resistant, never generates exposed to air, and can be collected only with a diamond pickaxe or better. Bring a diamond pickaxe specifically for the debris; using an inferior pickaxe destroys the block without dropping it.

  • Diamond pickaxe: the minimum tool that successfully mines Ancient Debris.
  • Fire protection: fire-resistance potions are ideal. If you have none, carry blocks for an immediate shelter and a clearly marked retreat path to the portal.
  • Food and spare blocks: Nether corridors can open into lava, caverns or hostile-mob areas with little warning.
  • Coordinates and markers: note the portal, the mining Y level and each branch so you do not retrace tunnels or lose your exit.
  • Gold armor: wear at least one gold armor piece when approaching Piglins. It reduces accidental aggression, although Piglin Brutes remain hostile.
  • Explosives, if used: beds or TNT, plus a safe firing position and enough blocks to seal side passages.

Mechanics described here follow the modern smithing system introduced during the 1.20 development cycle. A current release may label menus or structures slightly differently between Java and Bedrock, so check the edition you play before relying on an older guide that skips the template.

The fastest overall route: Bastion first, mining second

You cannot complete a modern Netherite upgrade with an ingot alone. The Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template is a required smithing ingredient, and each template is consumed when used. That makes a Bastion Remnant a sensible first objective rather than an optional detour.

Why a Treasure Room Bastion matters

Templates can appear randomly in Bastion Remnant chests. Mojang’s official Java Snapshot 23w04a notes (24 January 2023) state that every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant guarantees two Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates. Other Bastion types can still contain a template, but they do not provide that documented two-template guarantee. A Treasure Room is therefore the best target when you want one template for your first upgrade and another to copy or use.

“Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates can be found randomly in all Bastion Remnant chests, and there is a guarantee of 2 in every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant.” — Mikael Hedberg, Mojang Studios, Java Snapshot 23w04a notes, 24 January 2023

Approaching the structure safely

  1. Enter the Nether with your portal coordinates written down and a route back marked with non-Netherrack blocks.
  2. Look for a Bastion Remnant while keeping a bridge, tunnel or vertical escape route available. Do not commit to a dead-end hallway.
  3. Put on a gold armor piece before entering Piglin territory. Keep distance from Piglin Brutes; gold armor does not make them neutral.
  4. Block off openings as you advance, keep food on the hotbar and avoid opening multiple chests while surrounded.
  5. Prioritize the Treasure Room when you can identify it. Loot the chests, then leave before fighting becomes the limiting factor.

The Bastion-first plan is fastest in terms of getting a legal upgrade path, but it is not automatically the safest. If the structure is far away or heavily defended, secure a retreat and begin mining elsewhere rather than gambling your only diamond gear.

Where Ancient Debris generates

Mojang’s 25 March 2021 Netherite guide describes two possible Ancient Debris distributions per chunk: one between Y=8 and Y=22, and another between Y=8 and Y=119. The average chance is highest at Y=15, but that is a probability peak, not a guarantee. Debris is concealed inside netherrack and other Nether blocks, so an open cavern can contain less visible debris than a tunnel through solid terrain.

“Ancient debris isn’t easy to find – it never generates exposed to the air, so you’ll have to go digging.” — Duncan Geere, Minecraft writer, Mojang Studios, 25 March 2021

“On average, level 15 gives you the highest chance to find some, but no guarantees.” — Duncan Geere, Minecraft writer, Mojang Studios, 25 March 2021

Set your main horizontal tunnels at Y=15. The exact block position of your character can vary by interface and edition, so verify the displayed Y coordinate rather than estimating from a nearby lava lake. Branching exposes more blocks per block mined than a single straight passage and avoids assuming that every chunk contains a vein.

Mining methods compared

Method Setup and supplies Why use it Main risks or limits
Branch mining around Y=15 Diamond pickaxe, food, blocks and a way to mark branches Lowest supply overhead; reliable baseline for a new world Slowest terrain clearing per swing; lava pockets still require care
Bed explosions Many beds, blocks for a firing shelter, and a clear retreat line Beds explode in the Nether and reveal a large area quickly Severe blast and fire damage if the shelter or firing position is wrong
TNT mining TNT plus a substantial supply of sand and gunpowder Rapid clearing once a mob farm or other supply chain exists Resource-intensive to prepare; explosions can destroy drops or open hazards
Bastion-first route Gold armor, blocks, food, fire protection and an escape plan Targets the required template before investing in large-scale mining Piglins and Piglin Brutes make the approach dangerous; structure location is variable

The Minecraft Wiki’s Ancient Debris tutorial compares strip-mining, beds and TNT, but no cited source supplies a controlled seconds-per-ingot test. Treat “fastest” as a decision based on your inventory and risk tolerance, not as a universal timed ranking. A prepared TNT operation may clear more blocks per minute than hand mining, while a first trip with no gunpowder is usually better served by a pickaxe and branches.

Method 1: branch mining at Y=15

Use this method when you are starting from scratch, have limited explosives or want the smallest chance of a catastrophic death. It converts time and pickaxe durability into predictable exposure without requiring a farm.

  1. From a safe Nether location, descend or climb to Y=15 and build a two-block-high main tunnel.
  2. Make regularly spaced side branches, leaving enough solid wall between them that every face is not mined twice.
  3. When lava appears, seal the source with blocks, back away and open a side route around it. Do not sprint into an unfamiliar opening.
  4. Mine every Ancient Debris block with the diamond pickaxe. Check behind and above the first block because a vein can continue into the wall.
  5. Mark completed branches and return to the portal when your inventory, food or pickaxe durability reaches the limit you set.

Because Ancient Debris is not exposed to air, simply scanning a cavern is not a substitute for this process. The point of the branches is to reveal concealed blocks on multiple faces while keeping a controlled path home.

Method 2: bed mining

Beds normally cannot be used as sleeping equipment in the Nether; attempting to use one triggers an explosion. That behavior makes beds an inexpensive clearing tool if you already have wool and wood. It is a practical tactic, not a documented timed winner.

Safe firing pattern

  1. Dig a short, straight tunnel at approximately Y=15 and stop at a solid wall.
  2. Place a bed at the end with a block between the bed and your intended standing position, or shape a recess that leaves the blast facing into mined terrain.
  3. Stand behind the protective block and use the bed. Immediately retreat around a corner or behind additional solid blocks.
  4. Wait for fire and debris to settle, extinguish exposed flames, and inspect the cavity for Ancient Debris before placing the next bed.
  5. Close side openings and mark the blast site so the return route remains legible.

A bed can expose a broad cavity, but the same blast that removes netherrack can injure you, ignite the floor or open a path to lava. Never activate one while standing beside it in an unprotected two-block tunnel. Carry enough ordinary blocks to build a blast shield and a quick seal.

Method 3: TNT mining

TNT is attractive after you have a stable supply of sand and gunpowder. It clears connected tunnels rapidly and lets you inspect a long line of terrain without swinging a pickaxe through every block. The preparation cost is the trade-off: a player without stored gunpowder may spend more time gathering explosives than mining directly.

How to run a controlled TNT line

  1. Prepare a straight tunnel around Y=15 with a retreat route that has no turns blocked by loose gravel or soul sand.
  2. Place TNT at consistent intervals rather than packing every block. Keep yourself behind a solid corner before ignition.
  3. Light the charge, retreat to cover and let the chain of blasts finish. Do not chase the explosion front.
  4. Approach only after checking for fire and lava. Mine any exposed Ancient Debris with the diamond pickaxe.
  5. Use blocks to cap dangerous openings, then extend the line from a cleared, marked position.

TNT does not remove the need to inspect walls, floors and ceilings, and careless placement can destroy access routes or expose several lava pockets at once. It is most efficient for an established player who values terrain clearing speed and can replace the materials used.

Processing Ancient Debris into Netherite

Once you have collected debris, leave the Nether only if your route is safe; the crafting chain can be completed in the Overworld or Nether.

  1. Put Ancient Debris in a furnace or blast furnace. Each smelt produces Netherite Scrap.
  2. Combine four Netherite Scrap with four Gold Ingots in a crafting grid to make one Netherite Ingot.
  3. Repeat the process for every diamond item you intend to upgrade. The ingot is the material cost; the template is a separate, consumable requirement.

Gold is therefore part of every ingot, even though the mining target is Ancient Debris. If you are short on gold, plan a separate Nether trip or gold-farming session instead of assuming a large debris haul alone will produce upgrades.

Using and duplicating the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template

At a smithing table, place the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in the template slot, the diamond tool, weapon or armor piece in the equipment slot, and one Netherite Ingot in the material slot. The output is the Netherite version of that item. The template is consumed, so one template supports one upgrade.

Duplicate before spending your only copy

Mojang’s 2023 smithing-template recipe lets you multiply a template rather than returning to a Bastion for every upgrade. In a crafting grid, combine seven diamonds, one block of the template’s material and one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template. The result is two templates. The material block for this template is netherrack. This consumes the original ingredients but leaves you with an extra template for another smithing operation.

If you found two templates in a Treasure Room Bastion, you can use one for an initial upgrade and keep the other for duplication, or duplicate immediately when you know you will upgrade several items. Count your planned upgrades before using the template so an accidental single use does not stop the project.

A complete fast-run checklist

  • Diamond pickaxe equipped and a spare tool or repair plan available.
  • Food, blocks, fire protection or a mapped retreat.
  • Gold armor piece for Piglin encounters.
  • Portal coordinates and visible route markers.
  • Bastion search completed, with a Treasure Room prioritized when practical.
  • Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template secured before attempting the smithing-table upgrade.
  • Mining branches or controlled bed/TNT blasts centered near Y=15.
  • Ancient Debris smelted into Netherite Scrap, then four scraps and four gold ingots crafted into each ingot.
  • Template duplicated when multiple upgrades justify seven diamonds and a netherrack block.
  • Smithing table loaded with the template, diamond item and ingot in the correct slots.

Common problems and fixes

“I found debris but it did not drop.”

Check the tool in your hand. Ancient Debris requires a diamond pickaxe or better; an iron or stone pickaxe is not sufficient.

“There is nothing at Y=15.”

Y=15 is the highest-average level, not a guaranteed vein. Extend branches through fresh terrain, or use a controlled explosion to expose more concealed blocks. Do not infer that an empty tunnel disproves the generation range.

“The smithing table will not accept my ingot.”

Current smithing requires the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template as well as a diamond item and Netherite Ingot. Guides written before the 1.20 smithing redesign may show an obsolete two-item recipe.

“Piglins attacked while I was looting.”

Make sure a gold armor piece is equipped, and remember that opening containers or mining certain blocks can still provoke nearby Piglins. Piglin Brutes are hostile regardless of gold armor; block line of sight, retreat and re-enter from a safer angle.

“A bed or TNT blast killed me.”

Explosives require a solid firing shelter, a retreat route and time to clear fire and lava. If you cannot build those safeguards in the current tunnel, switch to branch mining rather than repeating the same blast position.

Which method should you choose?

Choose branch mining when you have no established supply chain or want the lowest-risk, lowest-overhead approach. Choose beds when wool and wood are abundant and you can consistently build blast shelters. Choose TNT when sand, gunpowder and a marked retreat network are already available. Choose the Bastion-first route whenever you still lack the smithing template; obtaining that required item early prevents a large debris haul from ending with no legal upgrade.

For most new worlds, the practical sequence is Bastion scouting with a safe escape, followed by Y=15 branch mining and ordinary furnace smelting. Experienced players can replace portions of the mining phase with beds or TNT, but the resource and danger trade-offs—not a guaranteed stopwatch result—determine which run finishes first for them.
