Prepare for the toxic gas
Old food around the can creates a toxic gas hazard, so get the in-game Gas Guard effect before starting the climb. A guide by Rory Norris at PC Gamer describes two ways to do this:

| Gastro Goo smoothie | Blend a stinkbug gas sack, roach chunk, aphid honeydew, and grub sludge at a smoothie station. | Consume it to gain Gas Guard rather than relying on the mask. |
Gas Guard is an effect in the game; the Gas Mask is an in-game item, not real-world protective equipment.
Climb the trash can
- Go to the Garbage Can in the Entrance Area. Approach from the wooden ledge on the bin’s west side.
- Cross the branch into the gap in the can. Jump onto the banana to your right.
- Turn back and jump to the crumpled paper. If you continue forward along the banana before turning back, the guide notes that you can reach a Real Science point.
- Continue around the outside of the can. Follow branches and rope, then climb over the other debris toward the rim and summit.
- Defeat the O.R.C. cockroach. Interact with the transmitter at the top to advance the Signals and Stashes mission.
Use landmarks to find your way
If the route is hard to read, the community-maintained Grounded Wiki’s Entrance Area guide describes landmarks along the ascent: a branch on the retaining wall, a rotten banana, a leaning spork, the trash-can rope handle, the rim, and another spork leading to the top. Use these features to reorient rather than looking for a single continuous path.

What the December 2025 update changed
Obsidian’s version 0.2.2 December Feature Update, published December 2, 2025, says a specific spot in the trash can should no longer leave players stuck and that spicy candy on top of the Trashcan is now reachable. The game is in Early Access, so later updates may change route details.
