There are three Pale Oils in Hollow Knight: Silksong: one hidden in Choral Chambers, one awarded for Great Taste of Pharloom, and one earned from the Flea Caravan in Act 3. Take any Pale Oil to Pinmaster Plinney in Bellhart to upgrade Hornet’s Needle.

There are no published completion-time comparisons for these routes. Choose based on which area and quest progression you have already reached.
1. Find Pale Oil in Choral Chambers
This is an exploration pickup, not a quest reward. The item is in northeast Choral Chambers, reached from Whispering Vaults. PCGamesN’s route guide describes defeating the Cogwork Dancers to open access to Whispering Vaults, then manipulating boxes in a puzzle room to make a path into Choral Chambers.
- Get Cling Grip, which is required to reach the Pale Oil pickup.
- Enter Whispering Vaults and work through the box puzzle toward the adjoining Choral Chambers area.
- In northeast Choral Chambers, collect the Pale Oil on the left, then use the floor lever to leave.
If you cannot reach the area, check your map and whether an ability gate is still blocking the route. The cited guides do not establish one universal order for reaching it, so your available paths may depend on your current progression.

2. Earn Pale Oil from Great Taste of Pharloom
Loyal Mergwin awards a Pale Oil for completing Great Taste of Pharloom. The quest involves collecting five unique items and then making a timed, on-foot delivery of the Courier’s Rasher to the dining hall in Choral Chambers. PC Gamer’s quest guide details the ingredients and delivery.
- Collect the five unique items required by Mergwin.
- Start the Courier’s Rasher delivery and head for the Choral Chambers dining hall on foot.
- Avoid taking damage and unnecessary fights: these reduce the time remaining for the delivery. Opening the map pauses the timer, according to the guide.
- After delivering the meal, collect the Pale Oil from the container to Mergwin’s right.
The route combines a collection quest with a timed run, so it is a good option if you have the ingredients and are ready to reach Choral Chambers.

3. Get the Act 3 Pale Oil from the Flea Caravan
The final Pale Oil is a late-game reward tied to the Flea Caravan and Act 3. To reach it, rescue all fleas, tell Fleamaster Mooshka about Pale Lake, and progress Ecstasy of the End. This is the Act 3 route; if you want Pale Oil earlier, pursue either of the two Citadel-area sources instead.

Give Pale Oil to Pinmaster Plinney
Take the item to Pinmaster Plinney in Bellhart to upgrade Hornet’s Needle. The first Needle upgrade is free; each of the next three upgrades consumes one Pale Oil, and later upgrades also require Rosaries. The Great Taste of Pharloom guide reports a 500-Rosary cost for the second Needle upgrade.
There are three Pale Oils in total, so the three items cover the three paid upgrades. Plinney offers Pinmaster’s Oil Wish after Hornet receives the first Needle upgrade. If you want the Wish recorded in your quest list, accept it after that first upgrade and before handing in Pale Oil; handing in the item first still allows the upgrade, but the Wish can be missed from the list.
