You can play RimWorld – Biotech on Linux through Steam: its official listing includes SteamOS + Linux requirements. Biotech is an expansion, not a standalone game, so you need the RimWorld base game as well. The official listings do not specify an Ubuntu release or guarantee compatibility with every Ubuntu setup.
Can I play RimWorld Biotech on Ubuntu?
The official Steam listing has a “SteamOS + Linux” system requirements section for Biotech, and Ludeon lists RimWorld for Windows, Mac, and Linux. That establishes Linux availability, but neither page names a tested Ubuntu version or promises that every graphics driver, desktop environment, or package configuration will work. Check the current Steam system requirements against your setup before buying.
Steam lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum in its SteamOS + Linux requirements. This is a stated system requirement, not a guarantee of performance on a particular Ubuntu computer.
Does RimWorld Biotech require RimWorld?
Yes. Biotech is an expansion/DLC, not the base game. Ludeon’s Biotech product page says, “This is an expansion pack for RimWorld. You’ll need RimWorld in order to play.” Steam likewise identifies the product as DLC and requires the Steam version of the base game for its Steam route.

What does Biotech add?
The expansion adds several connected systems that change how a colony develops and works:
- Children and family: colonists can have and raise children.
- Genetics: modify colonists into xenohumans with different genetic traits.
- Sanguophages: encounter and play with the expansion’s vampire-like xenotype.
- Mechanoids: control mechanoids for labor and confront super-mechanoid bosses.
- Pollution: manage the environmental consequences of mechanoid activity.
How to download and install RimWorld Biotech on Ubuntu
Choose the purchase route that matches where you own RimWorld. If you use Steam, acquire the DLC through Steam and install or update the base game from your library. If you buy directly from Ludeon, its product page offers a DRM-free purchase and says the expansion can be registered on Steam; check the current instructions and terms on that page.

- Confirm you own the base game. For the Steam route, make sure RimWorld is in your Steam library. Biotech alone does not include it.
- Check Linux requirements and availability. Open the official Steam Biotech listing and review its SteamOS + Linux requirements and the price shown for your region.
- Purchase Biotech from your chosen storefront. Use Steam’s DLC listing or Ludeon’s direct product page. Prices and availability can vary by region and change over time.
- Install through the matching route. For a Steam purchase, use the Steam client on Ubuntu to install or update RimWorld; the owned DLC is associated with the Steam account. For a direct purchase, follow Ludeon’s current download and registration instructions.
- Launch the base game and check the expansion. Start RimWorld and confirm Biotech is available among the game’s expansions before beginning a new colony.
