Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo find secret stars in the original Super Mario Galaxy, use the Star List and Universe Map to locate a galaxy with a missing Power Star, then check its available missions. The main optional routes to look for are pink Hungry Lumas, which reveal bonus galaxies when fed Star Bits, and Purple Comet missions, which send you back to a galaxy for a coin-collection challenge.
Find the missing Power Star first
Open the Star List to see which Power Stars you have collected, then use the Universe Map to identify galaxies where stars remain. Nintendo’s instruction booklet explains that selecting a galaxy on the map shows how many Power Stars you have found there. This narrows the search to a particular galaxy instead of requiring you to replay levels at random.
Feed a pink Hungry Luma
Look for a pink Hungry Luma in the Observatory or near a galaxy. When you approach one, the game shows how many Star Bits it wants. Feed it that amount and it transforms into a bonus mini-galaxy; complete that galaxy’s challenge to earn its Power Star. The required number of Star Bits varies by Luma.
For example, a walkthrough documents a Hungry Luma near the Terrace that appears after Honeyhive Galaxy’s Big Bad Bugaboom mission. It asks for 400 Star Bits and reveals Sweet Sweet Galaxy. That is one example, not a universal requirement: follow the amount displayed in your game. GameFAQs’ Hungry Luma walkthrough describes this route.

Revisit galaxies for Purple Comets
After completing a galaxy’s main route, check whether a Purple Comet mission is available. These missions take place in a galaxy you have already visited and challenge you to collect the Purple Coins specified by that mission. GameFAQs’ walkthrough documents challenges requiring 100 or 150 coins; check the in-game mission for the target in your case. See the Purple Comet walkthrough for examples.
Check the galaxy’s other mission options
Not every missing star is necessarily a Hungry Luma bonus galaxy or a Purple Comet. Once the Star List points you to a galaxy, select it and inspect the available star missions for one you have not completed. The exact missing mission and its unlock condition depend on the galaxy, so use the game’s progress screens to focus your search before consulting a walkthrough.

- Enhance your adventure even further with a free update to take advantage of the processing power of Nintendo Switch 2!
A practical search sequence
- Open the Star List and note which Power Star or galaxy is incomplete.
- On the Universe Map, select that galaxy to check its collected-star count.
- Inspect the galaxy’s star-selection options for an unplayed special or hidden mission.
- Look around the Observatory and the galaxy for a pink Hungry Luma; feed it the Star Bits requested on screen to reveal its bonus galaxy.
- If the galaxy’s main route is complete, check for a Purple Comet mission and collect the required coins.
- If the star is still missing, search a walkthrough using the exact galaxy and mission name. Nintendo’s manual suggests searching with the game title and terms such as “walk through,” “FAQ,” or “tips.”
Keep the game version straight
This guide is for the original Super Mario Galaxy, not Super Mario Galaxy 2, which has its own progression and star systems. Nintendo describes the Switch collection as containing both games, with enhanced resolution, an improved UI, and additional content; it also notes a free visual update for Switch 2. See Nintendo’s collection page for those edition details.
