For a smoother start in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, treat progression as a loop: explore with the right tool, collect gear and knowledge where the world places them, then spend skill points on the approach you want to try. Skills and Abilities are separate systems, and there is no universally best skill-tree branch. Ubisoft says you can reset your skill focus without spending in-game currency, so experimentation is part of the intended approach—not a mistake to avoid.
A simple early-game loop
When you arrive somewhere new, use Synin to spot points of interest, then use the compass to orient yourself toward important upgrades or Books of Knowledge. Once you are searching a particular area, Odin Sight helps reveal nearby items and secrets. Collect what you find, look for gear at its specific location rather than expecting ordinary enemies to drop new weapons or armor, and spend earned skill points according to the way you want to play.

This sequence keeps three kinds of progress distinct. Exploration can uncover equipment and Books of Knowledge; progression earns skill points for the Skill Tree; and settlement construction opens additional story and gameplay opportunities. You do not need to settle on a permanent build before you understand those systems.
Think of these as parallel routes, rather than a single checklist where every discovery serves the same purpose. A Book of Knowledge expands or improves your Abilities. A gear discovery gives you equipment to consider using. A skill point lets you make a choice in the tree. Settlement construction can open new kinds of content and support. Knowing which kind of reward you are pursuing helps you decide what to investigate next without assuming every marker is a weapon or every point belongs in one specific branch.

A useful rhythm is to survey first, choose a nearby goal, and search deliberately once you reach it. Synin can help you identify points of interest; the compass can guide you toward important upgrades and Books of Knowledge; Odin Sight is the close-range search aid once you are exploring a location. After you make a discovery, take a moment to identify whether it changes your gear, your available Abilities, or your broader progression. That small pause prevents the systems from blurring together.
Skills and Abilities are different
The terms sound similar, but they describe different kinds of character development. Skills are unlocked with progression points in the Skill Tree. Abilities are moves learned from Books of Knowledge found in the world. A Book can grant a new melee or ranged Ability, or upgrade one you already have.
| System | How you get it | What it does | Beginner implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skill Tree skills | Earn skill points through progression and spend them in the tree. | Unlock passive and active skills; the tree also improves stats and Power Level. | Choose skills to support the approach you want to try. Skill focus can be reset without in-game currency, according to Ubisoft. |
| Abilities | Find Books of Knowledge in the world. | Provide melee or ranged moves, or upgrade existing Abilities. | Read what a move does and use it deliberately: Abilities consume adrenaline. |
Ubisoft’s beginner guide, published November 9, 2020, describes both progression points and Books of Knowledge; its skill-path guide also explains the tree’s effect on stats and Power Level. Those system explanations help with getting started, but they are not a current, patch-specific build ranking. The available guidance does not establish one optimal skill order or a best branch for every player.
The practical distinction is about where your next improvement comes from. If you have a skill point available, look at the Skill Tree and choose a skill or broader path that fits what you want to try. If you want another move, look for Books of Knowledge while exploring. These are not interchangeable currencies or unlock methods: finding a Book does not replace spending skill points, and spending a point does not mean you have found a new Ability.
It is also helpful to separate an Ability’s acquisition from its use. A Book lets you learn or upgrade the move, but using Abilities consumes adrenaline. So a newly learned move is another option in your kit, not a reason to use it without considering the resource cost. Read the move’s description and decide whether its function suits the situations you want to handle.
Spend skill points to support your approach
When you earn points, decide what kind of support you want next rather than trying to imitate a supposedly mandatory build. If a passive or active skill sounds useful for the way you prefer to approach the game, it can be a reasonable choice. The tree improves stats and Power Level as well as unlocking skills, so points contribute to broader progression, not just a list of moves.
Use the reset option as a way to experiment if your preferences change or you want to try a different focus. Ubisoft says skill focus can be reset without in-game currency. That is useful freedom, but it does not make every point an automatic or consequence-free choice in all respects; the source establishes the lack of an in-game-currency cost, not every detail of reset behavior or any possible interface conditions.
- Pick skills for a playstyle you actually want to test, rather than treating a branch label as a promise that it is best.
- Check what an individual skill does before spending points; broad descriptions do not establish that every skill in a path is equally useful to you.
- Revisit your focus as you learn what you enjoy. A reset is a practical option if you want to shift emphasis.
Ubisoft’s skill-path guide mentions Wolf-aligned gear detail, but the information here does not rank gear by branch or identify a gear-and-skill combination as the correct beginner setup. Use alignment as context when you are considering a direction, not proof that you must follow it.
For a new player, this makes a small, deliberate choice more useful than waiting for certainty. Ask what you want your next points to do: add a skill that sounds relevant, support your preferred approach, or contribute to the tree’s broader improvement of stats and Power Level. Then read the specific description and make the choice that best matches that aim. The official guidance supports flexibility, not a prescribed sequence of nodes.
There is no need to treat a path label as a commitment to one style forever. If your first choices do not feel like a good fit, the reset option gives you room to change your skill focus without an in-game-currency charge. That is a reason to use the tree thoughtfully, not to panic over each point or to assume a reset will solve every possible issue; Ubisoft’s statement is specifically about the currency cost.

Find Abilities by exploring for Books of Knowledge
Abilities do not come from spending Skill Tree points. Look for Books of Knowledge in the world: each one grants a new melee or ranged Ability, or improves an existing one. This makes exploration a direct way to expand the moves available to you, separate from the progression that raises your Power Level and unlocks tree skills.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Because Abilities use adrenaline, acquiring one is not the same as having an unlimited-use action. Before relying on a move, learn what it does and consider when it is worth spending adrenaline. The beginner guidance does not provide a universal rotation or recommend a particular Ability as essential, so choose based on the move’s function and your own preferences rather than assuming you need to collect or use them in a fixed order.
- Use the compass to help locate important upgrades and Books of Knowledge.
- Search the surrounding area with Odin Sight when you are trying to find items or secrets.
- When you discover a Book, check whether it grants a new move or upgrades one you already have.
- Keep the adrenaline cost in mind when deciding whether to use an Ability.
When you find a Book, the useful beginner question is not simply “Is this new?” but “What does this add to what I can do?” A Book may introduce a melee move, a ranged move, or improve an existing Ability. Knowing which it is helps you make sense of the discovery and decide whether it changes how you want to approach encounters. The fact that a move is available does not mean every situation calls for it, particularly because Abilities consume adrenaline.
Do not confuse an Ability upgrade with a Skill Tree improvement. They are separate forms of progression and have separate sources. If your goal is to grow the set of moves available to you, explore for Books; if your goal is to spend progression points, use the tree. Keeping those goals separate makes your next step clearer when you are deciding whether to search further or return to your character progression.
Use each exploration tool for its job
The navigation tools complement one another. Synin is useful for spotting points of interest; Odin Sight is for searching nearby space for items and secrets; and the compass points toward important upgrades and Books of Knowledge. Treating them as interchangeable can make exploration less efficient: one helps scan points of interest, another helps search an area, and the compass gives directional guidance.
| Tool | Best-supported use | When to turn to it |
|---|---|---|
| Synin | Spot points of interest. | When you want to survey an area for places worth investigating. |
| Odin Sight | Search an area for items and secrets. | When you are exploring a location and want help finding nearby discoveries. |
| Compass | Point toward important upgrades and Books of Knowledge. | When you are looking for those progression-related discoveries. |
These tools tell you where or what to search for; they do not mean every point of interest contains a weapon, armor piece, or Book. Follow the relevant signal, inspect what is there, and let the discovery determine whether you have found equipment, knowledge, or something else.
A simple way to use them together is to start broad and then narrow your search. First use Synin when you want to survey for points of interest. Use the compass when your goal is an important upgrade or Book of Knowledge. Once you reach a location and want to find nearby items or secrets, turn to Odin Sight. This is a division of labor, not a requirement to use every tool at every stop.
If an exploration signal leads to something other than the reward you expected, that does not mean the tool failed. The tools assist with surveying, direction, and local searching; they do not guarantee a particular item at every location. Let the actual discovery guide your next decision: an item may add to your gear choices, a Book can add or improve an Ability, and another find may simply be a different point of interest.
Where weapons and armor come from
Do not build your early gear plan around routine enemy looting. Ubisoft’s beginner guide says equipment is found at specific locations, with legendary items, quest rewards, and merchants as additional sources. In other words, if you want a new weapon or armor piece, exploration and the game’s other named reward sources matter more than assuming ordinary enemies will supply a steady stream of replacements.
Recommended Free Tools
- Specific locations: investigate locations as you explore; gear is placed in particular spots.
- Quest rewards: quests can provide equipment, so pay attention to reward information as you progress.
- Merchants: merchants are another stated source of gear.
- Legendary items: Ubisoft identifies these as an additional source, but the beginner guidance does not give a complete list or a recommended early item.
The official guidance does not establish a best early weapon, a best armor set, or a precise upgrade-spending plan. It is more useful to compare a piece you have actually found with your current needs than to chase an unsupported best-in-slot claim. Consider the weapon type, the location or reward source, and whether you want to invest in upgrading it. Ubisoft’s skill-path guide notes Wolf-aligned gear detail, but that alone does not show that a particular item is superior for a new player.

If you have not found a gear piece that suits you yet, that is not evidence that you missed a mandatory drop from routine enemies. Keep using the compass, Synin, and Odin Sight for their distinct purposes, and check locations and quest rewards as they become available.
When comparing equipment, start with what you actually know about each option. The weapon type is one useful comparison axis: it helps you think about the kind of tool you want to carry. The item’s location or source can tell you whether it came from exploration, a quest, a merchant, or a legendary-item source. Finally, consider whether you want to invest in upgrading it. The official beginner guidance does not give a numerical ranking, named best-in-slot piece, or exact upgrade budget, so avoid treating a particular early item as mandatory.
That approach also keeps gear decisions connected to your preferences without overclaiming synergy. Ubisoft’s skill-path guide mentions Wolf-aligned gear detail, but it does not establish a universally superior branch or one required combination of equipment and skills. Use alignment as one point of context when considering a direction, while still basing a decision on the gear you have found and the way you want to play.

The available advice supports knowing where gear comes from, not a guaranteed schedule for when each source will provide a particular item.
Give the settlement attention as you progress
Settlement construction is more than a cosmetic side project. Ubisoft says developing the settlement opens narrative arcs, missions, activities, bonuses, and mechanics. That makes it a meaningful part of overall progression: paying attention to it can broaden what the game offers beyond the next skill point or piece of equipment.
There is no definitive first-building or upgrade order established by the official guidance summarized here. Avoid treating a made-up sequence as necessary. Instead, notice what a construction option says it unlocks and choose based on the kind of content or support you want to open up. Ubisoft News’ November 11, 2020 guide to mastering the game also points players toward settlement building as part of the wider experience.
This makes settlement development a useful counterbalance to focusing only on character upgrades. The Skill Tree changes your progression through skills, stats, and Power Level; Books expand or improve Abilities; gear comes from specific places and other named sources; settlement construction opens additional arcs, missions, activities, bonuses, and mechanics. Each system contributes in a different way, so keeping the settlement in view helps you avoid reducing all progress to equipment or points.

Beginner decisions worth avoiding
Do not mistake a guide for a mandatory build
Skill-path discussion can help you understand the tree, but it does not establish that every player should select the same branch. Your skill focus can be reset without in-game currency, so a considered experiment is more sensible than postponing every choice for fear of getting it wrong.
Do not confuse unlocking an Ability with using it for free
A Book of Knowledge adds or upgrades an Ability; Abilities consume adrenaline. Know what a move does and take that resource cost into account before using it.

Then use the corresponding tool or progression system: Synin to spot points of interest, the compass to guide you toward important upgrades and Books, Odin Sight to search locally, and the Skill Tree when you have points to spend. The point is not to impose a rigid route; it is to connect your action to the kind of progress you want.

About editions and platform details
If you have not yet chosen an edition, Ubisoft Help’s page, updated September 30, 2026, lists Standard, Deluxe, Ragnarök, Complete, Collector, and Ubisoft+ Premium. Ubisoft warns that content can vary by region. Confirm the contents for your platform and region before buying; the edition names alone are not enough to establish that a particular bundle includes the same content everywhere. Platform compatibility and supported peripherals are also platform-specific, so check the relevant support details for your setup rather than assuming a feature or accessory works across platforms.
The core beginner advice above concerns progression systems and exploration, not a patch-specific build. Specific balance, live store contents, and regional edition availability can change; verify current platform and region details where those affect a purchase or setup decision.
For a purchase comparison, the reliable starting points are the platform you intend to play on, the contents listed for that platform and region, and whether the edition is one you actually want. Ubisoft’s listed names include Standard, Deluxe, Ragnarök, Complete, Collector, and Ubisoft+ Premium, but the information here does not establish detailed contents for every offer, current prices, stock, or the same availability in every territory. Check the current Ubisoft or retailer listing before deciding. Supported peripherals likewise depend on platform, so verify compatibility for your setup rather than generalizing from another platform’s support page.
