It covers Chapter 1, including the mako-reactor bombing mission, and Square Enix says its save can transfer to the full game—provided you have not already created a full-game save. Before downloading, confirm that you own a Nintendo Switch 2, plan for at least 90 GB of free storage, and understand that the physical package is a Game-Key Card that still needs an internet download.
Nintendo’s product listing describes the edition as a Switch 2 release with handheld, tabletop and TV support. It is not an original Nintendo Switch game. The package combines the main remake’s Midgar story with the Yuffie-led FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, so it is a substantial first part of a larger retelling rather than the complete original FINAL FANTASY VII story.

The safest way to begin
For a new player, the cleanest order is simple: check the console, install the Switch 2 demo, play its opening chapter, and only then decide whether to continue into the full release. This approach lets you test the presentation and the hybrid combat system without committing to a purchase first. It also protects the demo-to-full-game save transfer, because Square Enix’s condition is that a full-game save must not already exist when you want to carry the demo progress over.

- Verify the hardware. This edition is listed for Nintendo Switch 2, not the original Nintendo Switch.
- Check free space. Reserve at least 90 GB for the first download, with additional room available for updates.
- Download the Switch 2 demo. The demo contains Chapter 1 and the mako-reactor bombing mission.
- Play the demo before launching the full game. Do not create a full-game save first if transferring the demo progress matters to you.
- Purchase and install the full edition. When the full game is ready, use the demo save under the transfer condition described by Square Enix.
- Follow the on-screen tutorials. The official descriptions establish a real-time system combined with strategic, command-based choices; the game itself supplies the detailed prompts and controls.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi described the remake series as bringing FINAL FANTASY VII “to the modern era by remaking and reimagining it as a new, fresh gameplay experience” in a Nintendo UK interview published 22 January 2026. That framing is useful for first-time players: this is not merely the 1997 game with higher-resolution graphics, and you do not need to know the original to begin the opening chapter.

What this Switch 2 edition contains
The first entry in the remake project
FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE retells the original game’s events through Cloud’s escape from Midgar. It is the first entry in a remake trilogy, so this release does not cover the whole journey from the original FINAL FANTASY VII. Expect a complete opening arc set in and around Midgar, followed by a story that continues in later entries rather than a single-package recreation of every original location.
FF7R EPISODE INTERmission
The edition also includes FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, a separate story starring Yuffie. Treat it as an additional campaign included with the package, not as a replacement for the main Cloud-led story. If you are starting fresh, the main remake is the natural first point of entry; INTERmission gives you another perspective after you understand the setting and the principal conflict.
For a concise contents reference, use the official Nintendo UK overview. It identifies both the Midgar-focused remake and the Yuffie episode without implying that the entire original adventure is present.
Confirm that your console is compatible
Nintendo’s UK listing identifies this edition as a Nintendo Switch 2 game and states that it cannot be played on the original Nintendo Switch. The game supports all three Switch 2 play styles:
- TV mode: play on a television through the console dock.
- Tabletop mode: use the console with its built-in stand and detached controllers.
- Handheld mode: play directly on the Switch 2 screen.
If your only console is an original Switch, do not buy this edition expecting backward compatibility. Regional storefronts can use slightly different labels, so check the local listing for the exact product name before purchasing, but the platform distinction itself is clear in Nintendo’s product information.
Play the demo before making a full-game save
What the demo includes
The free Switch 2 demo covers Chapter 1, including the mako-reactor bombing mission. That gives you the opening context and a practical introduction to the game’s real-time action and command choices. It is an opening chapter, not a shortened version of the entire adventure, so use it to judge whether the tone, pacing and combat feel right for you.
How save transfer works
Square Enix says the Switch 2 demo save can carry into the full game when the full-game save has not already been created. The important detail is the order of operations: play and finish the demo first, then launch the full game and use the transfer option or prompt presented by the software. If you start the full game and create a save before attempting the transfer, the demo data cannot be carried over under that condition.

| Situation | Can the demo progress transfer? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You played the Switch 2 demo and have not created a full-game save. | Yes, according to Square Enix’s Switch 2 information. | Keep the demo save on the console, install the full game, and follow the transfer prompt. |
| You created a full-game save before trying to import the demo. | No, the stated transfer condition is no longer met. | Continue from the full-game save or begin a new full-game file. |
| You are concerned about missing the transfer condition. | The demo transfer is optional. | Decide before launching the full release whether preserving the demo progress matters to you. |
Square Enix also says that the Revival Earrings and Survival Set are available through other means in the full game when the demo-transfer condition is missed. Missing the transfer therefore does not lock you out of those items forever, although it does mean that your demo progress itself will not be imported.
Avoid confusing the older Switch FAQ
Square Enix support has an older article titled “Can I transfer save data from the demo version?” that discusses a Nintendo Switch demo which cannot transfer to the Switch 2 version. That article concerns the earlier platform situation, not the current Switch 2 demo described by the publisher’s product information and the director interview. Read the platform wording carefully rather than applying the old answer to the new Switch 2 release. The older support page is available here.
Prepare storage and an internet connection
Why a physical package still needs a large download
Square Enix’s Japanese product page describes the physical Switch 2 package as a Game-Key Card. The card acts as the key to the game, but it does not mean that the complete game data is stored on the card. On first play, the full game downloads to the console.
The stated requirement is 90 GB or more of free space for that initial download. Square Enix presents this as a product requirement; it is not a performance benchmark or an estimate of the eventual space used by every update. Leave additional room if possible because updates may require more storage than the initial figure.

- Check the Switch 2’s available storage before inserting the Game-Key Card or starting the digital download.
- Plan for at least 90 GB free, not merely 90 GB of total capacity.
- Keep the console connected to a reliable internet connection during the first installation.
- Allow extra space for updates and any other games already installed.
- If the download cannot start, free space first and then retry rather than assuming the Game-Key Card contains the missing data.
The Square Enix Japan product page is the source for the Game-Key Card description and the 90 GB requirement. Regional packaging and store pages may use different wording, so verify the local listing if your box or download screen gives a different edition name.
Physical Game-Key Card or digital purchase?
Neither format avoids the initial download. The practical difference is how you acquire and access the license, not whether the full game must be downloaded.
| Consideration | Game-Key Card package | Digital edition |
|---|---|---|
| Initial installation | Requires an internet connection and at least 90 GB of free space to download the full game. | Requires an internet connection and at least 90 GB of free space for the download. |
| What is in the physical package | A Game-Key Card; the full game data is downloaded on first play. | No physical card; the game is downloaded to the console. |
| Storage impact | The large installation remains necessary, and updates may need more space. | The same large installation requirement applies, with possible additional update space. |
| Price and regional availability | Not established in the available official information; check your local retailer listing. | Not established in the available official information; check your regional Nintendo store. |
Choose the package if you specifically want a physical Game-Key Card and have the required download space and internet access. Choose digital if downloading directly is more convenient. Do not choose the package on the assumption that it works offline after a small installation; the publisher’s description says the full game downloads on first play.

What to expect from combat
The official overview describes combat as a combination of real-time action and strategic, command-based choices. In practical terms, you will engage with battles as action scenes while also selecting commands that shape what your party does. The design is intended to make moment-to-moment movement and decision-making part of the same system.

Do not rely on control guides for another platform as if they were verified Switch 2 instructions. Instead:
- Watch the tutorial prompts during the opening chapter.
- Pause when the game introduces a new command and read the explanation before rushing onward.
- Use the practice opportunities in the opening mission to learn the relationship between real-time actions and command selection.
- Check the game’s own control display if you forget a button or menu action.
This approach is safer than memorizing an unverified control scheme, especially because labels and mappings can vary by platform and configuration. The demo is useful here: it lets you learn the basic rhythm before the full story expands your responsibilities.
A beginner-friendly first session
Before launching
- Confirm that the console is a Nintendo Switch 2.
- Check that at least 90 GB is free, with more available for updates.
- Connect to the internet before beginning the installation.
- If you plan to transfer demo progress, make sure you have not created a full-game save.
During the demo
- Read the opening tutorial messages instead of skipping every prompt.
- Use the mako-reactor bombing mission to decide whether the action-and-command combat suits you.
- Keep the demo save until the full-game installation is complete if you want to import it.
When the full game is installed
- Look for the save-transfer option or prompt before creating a new full-game save.
- If transfer is available, confirm it and then continue into the main campaign.
- If you already created a full-game save, continue from that file; the demo progress cannot be imported under Square Enix’s stated condition.
You do not need to complete the original FINAL FANTASY VII first. The remake is designed as a fresh reimagining of the opening portion, and the official director interview explicitly presents the project as a new gameplay experience. Newcomers can therefore begin with the Switch 2 demo and learn the world through the remake’s own presentation.
Understanding the story’s scope before you start
The main campaign ends its retelling at Cloud’s escape from Midgar. That is a substantial narrative section, but it is only the first part of the remake trilogy. Buying this edition does not deliver every event, region or character arc from the original game in one package.

FF7R EPISODE INTERmission adds a Yuffie-focused story. Because it is a distinct episode, you can treat it as follow-up content after establishing yourself in the main remake. Starting with the main campaign also keeps the first-time player’s introduction centered on Cloud and the Midgar events that define this edition.

Symptom: A control instruction from another version does not match your screen.
Fix: Use the in-game tutorials and control display. The official information confirms the combat structure but does not provide a complete Switch 2 button chart.
Questions to settle before purchase
- Do you have a Nintendo Switch 2? The original Switch is not supported for this edition.
- Can you provide at least 90 GB of free storage? The requirement applies to the initial full-game download, including the Game-Key Card package.
- Is reliable internet available for installation? A connection is required for the first download.
- Do you want to preserve demo progress? If yes, play the Switch 2 demo first and avoid creating a full-game save until you are ready to transfer.
- Are you comfortable starting a multi-entry retelling? This release covers the story through Cloud’s escape from Midgar and includes the Yuffie episode; it is not the complete original adventure.
Final recommendation
For a first-time player on Nintendo Switch 2, download the free demo, play Chapter 1, and keep its save if you may want the transfer. Confirm the 90 GB storage requirement and internet download before choosing either format. Then begin the main campaign with the expectation that it is the Midgar-centered first entry in a trilogy, learn the real-time and command-based combat from the in-game tutorials, and treat FF7R EPISODE INTERmission as the included Yuffie side story.
