Start by learning enemy attack cues, then choose weapons to suit the opponent rather than committing to one setup. For exploration, follow the guiding wind when you have a destination and use the spyglass when you want to investigate a landmark. Take useful activities as you encounter them: Hot Springs increase maximum health, Bamboo Strikes increase Spirit, and Altars of Reflection unlock skills. There is no required completion route or single best beginner build.
How to read combat cues
Combat becomes easier to manage when you respond to the attack cue instead of reacting the same way to every enemy move. GameSpot’s beginner guide describes these core responses:
- Ordinary attacks: Hold L1 to block most basic attacks.
- Blue glint: Tap L1 just before impact to parry.
- Red glint: Press Circle to dodge rather than trying to block.
- Yellow glint: The enemy may try to disarm Atsu. Hold Triangle, then release as the enemy swipes.
Strong attacks can break an opponent’s guard. Parrying, kills, and advanced techniques can earn Spirit; spend it to restore health or activate abilities. This creates a useful combat loop: read the cue, defend or evade appropriately, then look for an opening to pressure the enemy.
Choose weapons for the opponent—and stay flexible
GameSpot’s matchup advice is to use a katana or odachi against foes with one-handed weapons, and dual blades against slower enemies wielding two-handed polearms. Treat that as a helpful starting point, not an exhaustive rule for every encounter. Ranged weapons can also let you engage enemies from a distance, and weapon types can be switched during a fight.

If you have a preferred weapon, familiarity can be useful; still, changing weapons to meet a matchup may improve your options. PlayStation Blog’s combat build guidance also notes that some armor effects activate when you use a weapon aligned with the armor.
Pick a fighting style that fits you
The builds described by PlayStation Blog are examples of different approaches, not a mandatory beginner progression order. The game begins with three saved builds, and the blog says you can eventually save five.

Warrior: parries and pressure
The Warrior concept focuses on parrying, using heavy attacks to stagger enemies, and matching your weapon to the opponent. It suits players who want to meet enemies directly and build advantage through timing and pressure.
Ghost: stealth and recovery after detection
The Ghost concept emphasizes staying out of sight and using chain assassinations. If an enemy spots you, tools such as sake jars and smoke bombs can help you return to concealment. It suits players who prefer to thin out threats quietly rather than begin with a direct fight.

Explore with a destination, but follow curiosity too
The guiding wind points toward your tracked quest or destination, so use it when you want to keep moving in a particular direction. When you spot an interesting landmark, the spyglass helps you discover what is nearby without repeatedly checking the map.
- Raise the spyglass and scan the surroundings for a yellow glow.
- Focus on the point of interest to mark it.
- Travel there to discover it; after discovery, it can become a fast-travel destination.
You can also get directions from signposts and NPCs, follow golden birds to notable places, and ride your horse, which is available from the start. GameSpot says the map supports fast travel to most discovered locations. These systems offer different kinds of help: follow the wind to stay oriented toward a goal, or pause to investigate when something catches your eye.

Take progression activities when they fit your route
Each early activity supports a different need. You do not have to clear every activity as soon as it appears; use its reward to decide whether a detour is worthwhile.

GameSpot’s guide hub summarizes the Hot Springs and Bamboo Strike rewards. Its beginner guide says Altars of Reflection can be revealed with the spyglass or with Traveler’s Maps purchased from Isaburo at the Old Inn; paying respects at an altar unlocks a perk.

Use camps as practical pause points
Camps give you several ways to prepare or recover. GameSpot lists cooking food for temporary buffs, crafting ranged ammunition, resting to restore health and Spirit, and playing the shamisen. Use a camp when those options address what you need next; it is a flexible stop, not a required step before every fight.
