Dragon Age: The Veilguard is no longer an upcoming release: it launched worldwide on October 31, 2024. If you are catching up now, Dragon Age: Origins is a self-contained way to meet the setting and its party-based role-playing style—but the available official information does not establish it as required preparation for The Veilguard.
How do you start Dragon Age: Origins?
At the main menu, choose New Game to begin a new run. Choose Load Game to return to a saved run, or Resume to load the most recent save. The official PC manual describes Origins as a story-focused, party-based fantasy RPG with tactical combat, and recommends taking time to create your character and learn the rules. EA’s PC manual

Choose a character that interests you
Character creation asks you to choose gender, race, and class. Race affects your character’s physical traits and place in Thedas. The manual says gender does not change stats or abilities, though it can affect dialogue and plot details. There is no single mandatory or objectively best choice in the manual’s guidance; choose the character and role you want to play.
Learn to manage the party and pause combat
Combat is tactical rather than purely reflex-driven. On PC, the manual documents Space to pause combat, F1–F4 to select party members, and the backslash key to open tactics. Pausing gives you a moment to assess the fight and issue commands. Use the journal (J) to review objectives and inventory (I) to check equipment. These are the legacy PC manual’s bindings; console players should use the control display for their platform instead.

Use quick saves and look for interactable objects
On PC, F5 quick-saves, F9 quick-loads, and Tab highlights objects. These can help you preserve progress and spot things to interact with as you explore. The manual does not establish that these key bindings apply to other platforms.
Do you need to play Origins before The Veilguard?
No requirement is established by the official sources cited here. EA lists Origins, Dragon Age 2, Inquisition, and The Veilguard as distinct games on its Dragon Age franchise page. That supports treating Origins as an earlier entry you can choose to play, not as a confirmed prerequisite. The available sources also do not establish that your Origins choices transfer into The Veilguard.

- Scalable combat options that let you decide the level of control you have over your party, including NPCs. Issue orders, set your own tactical AI, or take control of any party member to lead the charge.
- 6 possible playable preludes known as ‘Origin Stories’ which along with your play, define how your hero character will see the world, how it sees you and sets the tone for the entire story.
- Travel across the vast and varied lands of Ferelden; from the conspiratorial halls of the last great dwarven city, Orzammar, to the untamed snarls of the Korcari Wilds.
- Dragon Age: Origins will give you deep character customization options including: class, race, appearance, abilities, and equipment.
- At the heart of the storm sweeping across Ferelden. Decide the fate of nations, people and, ultimately, yourself. Just remember: for every choice, there is a consequence.
If you want to experience the original game and its party-based tactical systems, start with Origins. If your goal is simply to begin The Veilguard, the launch materials do not say you must finish earlier games first. EA’s October 31, 2024 announcement describes The Veilguard as a single-player RPG starring customizable protagonist Rook, with Warrior, Mage, and Rogue classes. Players choose two companions for quests and can direct allies through an ability wheel. Those are details about The Veilguard, not instructions for playing Origins. EA’s launch announcement
What should you know about The Veilguard if you are starting there?
The Dragon Age Team’s launch-day advice for The Veilguard is to check settings and accessibility options, try different builds, explore for side quests and loot, and complete companion quests because they affect later stages. This guidance is specific to The Veilguard; it is not a substitute for learning Origins’ controls and systems. Dragon Age: The Veilguard starter guide

How should you check access or edition details for Origins?
Current prices, stock, regional availability, edition contents, and online-service status are not established here. Before buying or recommending a copy, check the live listing for the platform and the exact included content—base game, expansion, or downloadable content—and confirm that it suits your goal of playing Origins rather than just getting context for a later game.
The PC manual contains historical notes about online accounts, registration, downloadable content, and possible retirement of online features. Those passages do not confirm what accounts, downloads, or servers currently require or support. Verify current requirements with the relevant storefront or platform rather than relying on the old manual.
