How to Get Started With RuneScape: Dragonwilds (Full-Release Beginner Guide)

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a survival-crafting adventure set in the RuneScape universe, not the long-running RuneScape MMORPG. The full release arrived on 15 September 2026 for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. To begin, choose where you want to own the game, confirm that your PC meets the Windows requirements if applicable, install the correct version, and then learn the cycle of exploring Ashenfall, gathering resources, building shelter, crafting equipment, developing skills and magic, completing quests, and preparing for dragon encounters.

You can play alone or in a group of up to four. Jagex has announced crossplay for the full release, so friends can coordinate across the listed platforms, although the exact world or server-selection screens can change with updates.

What Dragonwilds is—and what it is not

Dragonwilds uses the RuneScape setting, names and lore, but its structure is different from the traditional RuneScape and Old School RuneScape massively multiplayer online games. You enter Ashenfall, a dangerous wilderness designed around survival, crafting and expeditions rather than a persistent MMORPG economy and broad shared world.

Your early decisions revolve around staying supplied and establishing a safe foothold. You explore for materials, use those materials to build and craft, improve skills, learn and use skill spells, follow quests and prepare for increasingly dangerous creatures and dragon-related encounters. Combat matters, but the practical value of a skill or spell is often whether it helps you survive, travel, gather or prepare for the next fight.

The game reached full release on 15 September 2026. That date supersedes the older Early Access status still visible in some historical announcements. When reading an older guide, check whether it describes an Early Access build; recipes, balance, regions, interfaces and progression can change between updates.

Choose where you will play and buy the right version

Start by deciding both your platform and the storefront account that will own the license. The choice matters because the PC versions are separate installs and purchases.

Windows PC storefronts

Jagex identifies Steam and the Jagex Launcher as separate PC routes, and its full-release announcement also names the Epic Games Store. Buying or installing through one PC route does not automatically grant ownership of another. Before paying, confirm that the store shown in your browser or client is the one you intend to use for future updates and launches.

  • Steam: Buy and install from your Steam account. The Steam listing says Epic Online Services is required and supports linking to a Steam account.
  • Jagex Launcher: Sign in with a Jagex Account and install the Jagex Launcher version. This is a separate purchase and installation from Steam.
  • Epic Games Store: Jagex lists it as a PC storefront for the full release. Check its current regional listing and account requirements before purchase because detailed installation steps were not specified in the official material summarized here.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S

The full-release platform list includes PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Use the store built into your console and verify the current product page for regional availability, download size and any platform online-service requirement. The official announcement confirms the platforms and crossplay, but it does not establish a universal console installation sequence or current subscription requirement.

Solo or a party of four

Jagex describes Dragonwilds as playable solo or in teams of up to four. Solo play lets you set the pace and make every building and equipment decision yourself. A party can divide gathering, construction, exploration and combat responsibilities, but everyone still needs to coordinate supplies and the world or server they join.

Crossplay was announced for the full launch. If your group uses different platforms, agree on the platform accounts each person will use, the storefront or console version they own and the same available world or server setting. Interface labels and the exact invitation flow can change, so use the current in-game multiplayer screen rather than relying on an old video.

Check the Windows PC requirements before downloading

These specifications come from Jagex Support and are for Windows PC. They are not descriptions of console hardware. The support page and Steam listing reported the same figures when checked for the full-release guide; recheck the current support page before buying because requirements can change.

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, 6 GB; AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT; or Intel Arc A750, 8 GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070, 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, 8 GB
DirectX Version 12 Version 12
Storage 25 GB available 25 GB available
Network Not stated in the minimum column Broadband internet connection

How to interpret the two tiers

  • The minimum column is the baseline Jagex lists for running the PC version; it is not a promise of a particular frame rate or graphics preset.
  • The recommended column is the safer target if you want more headroom for a demanding survival world, larger scenes or future updates.
  • Leave more free space than the stated 25 GB when possible. Updates and temporary installation files may need working room even though the published requirement is 25 GB.
  • Use a 64-bit Windows installation and DirectX 12 support. If a system only reports a 32-bit operating system, it does not meet the listed requirement.
  • On a laptop, compare the dedicated GPU model—not only the CPU name—and make sure the game is using the high-performance GPU when the machine has both integrated and discrete graphics.

Install the PC version step by step

Steam installation

  1. Open the Steam client and sign in to the account that will own Dragonwilds.
  2. Open the Store tab and search for RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
  3. Purchase the Steam version, checking the displayed region and edition before confirming.
  4. Open Library, select Dragonwilds and choose Install.
  5. Choose an installation drive with at least the published 25 GB available, preferably with additional free space for updates.
  6. Allow Steam to finish downloading. The Steam listing indicates that Epic Online Services is required; follow the first-run prompt if the client asks you to link or authorize an account.
  7. Launch from Steam and complete any current sign-in or update prompts before inviting friends.

Steam ownership does not include the Jagex Launcher version. If you later decide to use the Jagex Launcher, treat it as a separate install and purchase rather than assuming your Steam license transfers.

Jagex Launcher installation

  1. Install and open the Jagex Launcher, then sign in with your Jagex Account credentials.
  2. In the launcher, open the Dragonwilds tab.
  3. Select Install.
  4. Choose the destination folder and confirm that the drive has sufficient free space.
  5. Select Download & Install and wait for the launcher to complete the download.
  6. Start the game from the Dragonwilds tab and apply any update shown by the launcher.

The Jagex Launcher route and Steam route are separate versions and purchases. Sign in to the account that owns the version you selected; having a Jagex Account or a Steam Account by itself does not grant access to both.

Console installation

  1. Open the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 5 or the Microsoft Store on Xbox Series X|S.
  2. Search for the full-release listing of RuneScape: Dragonwilds and verify the platform and region.
  3. Purchase or redeem the listing with the console account that will play it.
  4. Choose the console’s download or install command and wait for the game and any launch updates to finish.
  5. Launch the game, sign in to any account prompt shown and use the current multiplayer menu when joining friends.

Current console subscription, online-service and exact menu requirements are not stated in the official material covered here, so check the store and platform support pages for your region rather than assuming that PC account rules apply.

Set up your first session

Decide whether you are starting alone or with friends

If you are learning the systems, a solo world gives you time to read descriptions and experiment without delaying teammates. A group of two to four can gather faster and cover more tasks, but establish who is collecting, building, crafting or scouting before splitting up. For cross-platform groups, make sure each person has the full-release version on a supported platform and agrees on the same world or server setting.

Use the opening period to learn the loop

The official beginner material describes the loop at a systems level rather than specifying one fixed first quest, first recipe or tutorial menu path. Do not assume that an old walkthrough’s opening route is still current. Instead, use the first session to identify the game’s current prompts and observe how each activity feeds the next:

  1. Explore: Move through Ashenfall and note useful locations, hazards and routes back to your foothold.
  2. Gather: Collect the materials the environment makes available. Keep enough on hand for immediate survival and construction instead of spending every resource as soon as you find it.
  3. Build: Establish a practical base or foothold where you can return, organize materials and prepare for another expedition.
  4. Craft: Turn gathered resources into equipment and other tools shown by the current crafting interface. Prioritize what solves your next obstacle rather than trying to unlock everything immediately.
  5. Develop skills: Progress skills as you play. Skills are presented as practical survival tools, not merely combat statistics.
  6. Use skill spells: Treat magic as part of exploration and survival. A spell may change how you approach a task or threat, so read its current description and test it when the situation is safe.
  7. Complete quests: Follow the objectives available in your current version. Quests provide direction, but the exact first objective and menu wording may change with patches.
  8. Prepare for threats: Before pushing into a more dangerous area or confronting a dragon-related encounter, replenish supplies, improve equipment and return to a secure preparation point.

How to make early progress without a fixed walkthrough

Build for return trips

A useful early foothold is less about appearance than reducing the cost of every expedition. Put it where you can return reliably, keep your materials organized and make it the place where you prepare equipment and supplies. The game’s high-level design rewards repeated cycles of leaving prepared, gathering, returning and improving.

Spend resources according to the next decision

When you find a new material, ask what it enables in your current situation: a safer route, a stronger tool, a defensive improvement, a building component or preparation for a quest. This avoids exhausting a rare resource on an upgrade that does not help your immediate objective. In a team, say what you are reserving so another player does not unknowingly consume it.

RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg
  • Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
  • Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.

Treat skills and magic as utility

Dragonwilds presents skills and skill spells as ways to survive and solve problems. Read the descriptions when you unlock or improve them and consider whether they help with movement, gathering, building, preparation or combat. A player who only raises direct damage options can miss tools that make the next expedition safer or more efficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare before escalating danger

Progression eventually points toward tougher threats and dragon encounters. Do not treat a new region or objective as a signal to rush in with whatever you currently carry. Use your foothold to repair or replace equipment, restock the supplies your current build requires and make sure the group knows the objective. If an encounter is beyond your preparation, retreat, gather what is missing and return with a better plan rather than repeatedly losing time to the same attempt.

Playing with friends across platforms

Jagex announced crossplay for the full release, so a PC player and console players can potentially share a session. Crossplay availability does not remove the need for compatible ownership, current patches and the same multiplayer destination.

Pre-session checklist

  • Everyone has the full-release game installed on a supported platform.
  • PC players know whether they own the Steam or Jagex Launcher version; those licenses are not interchangeable.
  • All players have updated to the same current build.
  • The group has agreed on the world or server setting displayed by the current game.
  • Each player knows which account or platform identity the game will use for invitations and linking.
  • Voice or text coordination is ready before the group separates to gather or explore.

The official information confirms the four-player framing and crossplay announcement but does not document a permanent button-by-button invitation path. If a menu label differs from an older guide, follow the current in-game multiplayer and account prompts.

Common starting mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing Dragonwilds with RuneScape MMORPG onboarding

Do not begin with a guide written for RuneScape or Old School RuneScape. Those games have different worlds, interfaces, progression structures and account expectations. Dragonwilds is the survival-crafting title set on Ashenfall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying the wrong PC version

Check the store name before purchase. Steam and the Jagex Launcher are separate installs and purchases; access to one does not transfer to the other. If you intended to use Steam, do not buy the Jagex Launcher version expecting it to appear in your Steam Library.

Checking the wrong hardware requirement

Use the Windows table above for a Windows PC. Console players should not try to map a console model to the listed CPU and GPU names. PC players should also check RAM, DirectX 12 support and available storage, not only the processor.

Following an obsolete opening route

Full release followed an Early Access period, and the game can continue to receive patches. The official material supports the broad survival loop but does not establish a permanently fixed first quest, first recipe or tutorial route. Use current in-game objectives and descriptions.

Assuming crossplay means identical menus

Crossplay lets supported platforms play together, but account-linking prompts, store ownership and menu labels can differ by platform. Confirm each player’s version and use the current world or server controls when forming the group.

Troubleshooting your first launch

The game will not install on PC

  • Confirm that the Windows installation is 64-bit and meets the listed operating-system requirement.
  • Check that the CPU, GPU, RAM and DirectX 12 support meet at least the minimum specification.
  • Free more than the stated 25 GB if the installer needs temporary update space.
  • Verify that you are installing from the store where you purchased the game.
  • Restart the relevant client and retry the download after it has applied pending updates.

You cannot find the game after purchase

Check the account and client first. A Steam purchase appears in Steam Library; a Jagex Launcher purchase is accessed through the Dragonwilds tab after signing in to the owning Jagex Account. One route does not automatically populate the other.

A Steam launch asks for an additional service

The Steam listing states that Epic Online Services is required. Follow the current authorization or linking prompt shown by Steam and the game. If the prompt has changed, use the current support instructions rather than installing an unrelated version.

A friend cannot join

  • Confirm that everyone is on the same current game update.
  • Verify that each player owns a supported full-release version.
  • Check that PC players have not accidentally bought different launcher versions when the group expected one specific route.
  • Confirm the selected world or server setting and repeat the invitation from the current multiplayer screen.
  • For console players, check the platform’s current online-service status and regional restrictions.

Which starting route is right for you?

Your situation Practical choice Reason
You already use Steam and want one library for your PC games Steam version Purchase and launch through Steam, with the Epic Online Services requirement noted on the listing.
You prefer Jagex’s account and launcher ecosystem Jagex Launcher version Sign in with a Jagex Account and install from the Dragonwilds tab.
Your friends are on consoles and you are on PC Any supported PC route, coordinated with the group Crossplay is announced, but everyone must own a compatible version and use the same current multiplayer destination.
Your Windows PC is close to the minimum specification Check every component before buying The minimum requires 8 GB RAM, specific CPU and GPU classes, DirectX 12 and 25 GB available storage; a single component below the baseline can prevent a satisfactory start.
You want to play from a television or console-only setup PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S Both consoles are listed for the full release; verify the current regional store page and online-service terms.

What to expect after the first session

There is no single “correct” first build supported by the official overview. Your progress comes from connecting the systems: exploration supplies gathering, gathering enables construction and crafting, crafting and skills improve your ability to explore, quests provide objectives, and preparation allows you to tackle stronger threats. The most reliable habit is to leave your foothold with a purpose, bring back materials that support the next upgrade or quest and spend time preparing before entering a more dangerous area.

Solo players can make that loop deliberately and pause to learn each system. Groups can specialize temporarily, but should keep enough shared supplies and communicate before committing to a difficult encounter. Because the game is now in full release, use current patch notes, support pages and in-game descriptions for details that are likely to change rather than treating Early Access walkthroughs as permanent instructions.

Quick-start checklist

  1. Choose Windows PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  2. On PC, choose Steam, the Jagex Launcher or the listed Epic Games Store route, knowing that Steam and Jagex Launcher purchases are separate.
  3. On Windows, compare your system with the minimum and recommended table and confirm DirectX 12 and at least 25 GB available storage.
  4. Install through the store or launcher where you bought the game.
  5. Decide whether you will play solo or with up to three other players.
  6. If using crossplay, coordinate platform versions, current updates and the same world or server setting.
  7. Begin the Ashenfall loop: explore, gather, build a foothold, craft, develop skills, use skill spells, complete current quests and prepare before escalating threats.
  8. Ignore fixed first-quest or first-recipe claims unless they match the current in-game version or a current official walkthrough.
