For most Mac owners, GeForce NOW is the best place to start if you already own supported PC games on Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox PC, or another compatible storefront. Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming through Game Pass if you want an included subscription library instead. If you need a complete Windows desktop for manually installing games and software, look at Shadow PC.
Cloud gaming can let an older MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, or Mac Studio play demanding games without a local gaming GPU—but it cannot overcome an unstable network, an unsupported game, or a subscription model that does not match your library.

What cloud gaming means on a Mac
With cloud gaming, the game runs on a remote computer in a data center. Your Mac receives an interactive video stream, while your controller, keyboard, and mouse inputs travel back to the server. The Mac therefore does not need to render the game locally, but it still needs to decode video, maintain a stable connection, and send input quickly.

This is different from:
- A cloud PC: You rent a remote Windows computer and manage installations, launchers, updates, and settings yourself.
- Remote play: You stream from your own physical gaming PC or console.
- Native Mac gaming: The game runs directly in macOS.
Cloud gaming reduces the importance of local GPU power. It does not eliminate the need for low latency, low packet loss, suitable bandwidth, and a service that supports the exact game, launcher, edition, and region.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
What you need before starting
- A supported Mac and current-enough version of macOS.
- A stable broadband connection. Download speed alone is not enough; latency, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi congestion, and ISP routing also matter.
- Preferably Ethernet, or at least 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a newer Wi-Fi standard.
- A compatible controller for console-style games, or a physical keyboard and mouse for PC games.
- Either ownership of the game through a supported store or an eligible game subscription.
- Availability in your country and support for your chosen device, browser, and title.
GeForce NOW’s published Mac requirements
NVIDIA currently lists macOS 10.15 or later and Macs introduced in 2009 or later for GeForce NOW. Its published bandwidth guidance is 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 fps, 25 Mbps for 1080p up to 60 fps, 35 Mbps for QHD or ultrawide QHD up to 120 fps, 45 Mbps for 4K up to 120 fps, and 65 Mbps for 5K up to 120 fps. NVIDIA also recommends latency below 80 ms to its data center and Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. See the official GeForce NOW system requirements.
These are service requirements, not a performance guarantee. An older Intel Mac may technically qualify but struggle with high-resolution video decoding, heat, battery drain, or display limitations. 4K, 5K, HDR, and high frame rates may also require a paid membership and a suitable Mac and display.

| Shadow PC | A full remote Windows PC | macOS app or browser availability should be checked | Install and manage compatible software yourself | Verify current US configuration and checkout price | More setup, maintenance, and usually higher cost |
| Amazon Luna | Amazon’s supported subscription-channel ecosystem | Browser-based access should be checked by country | Luna channels and supported linked libraries | Verify current channels and price | Not a broad equivalent to bring-your-own-library services |
Provider-advertised resolution, frame rate, and catalog counts are ceilings or snapshots—not guarantees of what every Mac, game, region, or network will deliver.
GeForce NOW: the best starting point for owned PC games
Choose GeForce NOW when you already have a PC-game library and want a native Mac app, a high performance ceiling, or access to demanding games that do not run well on macOS.

Current US membership signals
- Free: Ad-supported, up to 1080p/60 fps, with access to more than 2,000 games shown by NVIDIA.
- Performance: $9.99/month or $99.99/year, with up to 1440p/60 fps shown on the US marketplace.
- Ultimate: $19.99/month or $199.99/year, with up to 5K/360 fps shown on the marketplace.
- Day Passes: Performance from $3.99 and Ultimate from $7.99.
Check NVIDIA’s US marketplace and premium membership page before subscribing because prices, promotions, plan features, and catalog counts can change.
A catalog listing does not mean the games are included in the membership. GeForce NOW traditionally streams supported games that you own or claim through a linked PC storefront. Publisher participation, region, launcher, edition, licensing, and technical compatibility all matter. Paid members may also see NVIDIA’s newer Install-to-Play offering, but its availability should be confirmed for the specific title.
Set up GeForce NOW in about 10–15 minutes
- Check macOS: Confirm that the Mac runs macOS 10.15 or later. Update macOS if practical.
- Test where you will play: Run a speed test near the Mac’s normal location, not only beside the router. Prefer Ethernet; otherwise use 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Install the official client: Download GeForce NOW from NVIDIA’s official site, sign in, or create an NVIDIA account.
- Start with Free: This is the least expensive way to test image quality, queue behavior, and input response before committing.
- Link stores: Connect Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox, or another supported account as needed.
- Verify the game: Search for the exact game inside GeForce NOW. Ownership alone is not proof of support.
- Connect input: Pair or plug in an Xbox, PlayStation, or other supported controller before launching the stream. Keep a physical keyboard and mouse available for PC interfaces.
- Launch at 1080p/60: Increase resolution only after latency and stability are acceptable.
- Check statistics if needed: NVIDIA documents a streaming-statistics overlay. The macOS shortcut described in its release notes is Command-N in the browser experience; verify the current shortcut and UI label in the live client because controls can change.
NVIDIA lists Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers, and Amazon Luna controllers among supported GeForce NOW gamepads. Other controllers may work but can require updates or additional software. NVIDIA also recommends a USB gaming mouse for Mac and PC use. See its Mac setup guidance.

Catalog size and availability vary by plan, country, device, and date. A PC-downloadable title is not automatically cloud-enabled. Microsoft has also stated that future Call of Duty titles will not join Game Pass at launch, while existing titles in the library remain available under their stated terms. Set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on Mac
- Open the official Xbox Cloud Gaming page.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Subscribe to an eligible Game Pass plan.
- Use Safari, Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or another currently supported browser.
- Connect a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller before starting a game.
- Select a title marked for cloud play.
- If the stream stutters, try a smaller browser window or lower the effective display resolution.
If a game does not appear, check the country, plan, device, current catalog, and cloud-play eligibility. Do not assume that an Xbox console entitlement, PC entitlement, or subscription includes every version on every platform.
Boosteroid, Shadow PC, and Amazon Luna
Boosteroid: check it for one specific title
Boosteroid is best treated as a catalog-specific alternative rather than an automatic upgrade over GeForce NOW. Before subscribing, confirm the exact game, edition, launcher, account requirement, supported country, nearby data center, Mac client or browser behavior, session limits, resolution caps, queue policy, and refund terms. Use the official Boosteroid site for current pricing and availability; no reliable current price is asserted here.

That flexibility can help with Windows-only software, custom launchers, mods, or games unavailable on catalog services. The trade-off is more maintenance, separate game purchases, possible storage or GPU-tier limits, and usually a higher total cost. Check the US configuration and checkout flow for current hardware and pricing.
Amazon Luna: useful for the supported ecosystem
Luna can make sense if your desired games are in its current channels, you already use Amazon services, or you want to use a Luna controller. Verify current US availability, subscription channels, linked-account requirements, Prime benefits, browser requirements, and controller support at Amazon Luna. It is not a general-purpose replacement for a large bring-your-own-PC-library service.
How to choose without wasting money
Start with game ownership
- Own Steam, Epic, or Ubisoft PC games? Search GeForce NOW first.
- Want one subscription with many included games? Check Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Need manual Windows installs, mods, or software? Consider Shadow PC.
- Care about one title missing elsewhere? Search that title on Boosteroid, Luna, and other services before buying it or subscribing.
Use a title checklist
- Is the exact game listed?
- Is the correct edition supported?
- Which launcher and account are required?
- Are cloud saves supported and transferable?
- Does cross-play work as expected?
- Are mods, anti-cheat, or third-party launchers compatible?
- Is the title available in your country and on your plan?
Compare the total cost
Include the subscription, game purchases, controller, Ethernet adapter, router upgrade, display, cloud-PC storage, and cancellation or refund terms. A $9.99 plan may be excellent for a game you already own, but poor value if your target title is unsupported. Conversely, a free-to-play game on a free tier may cost nothing beyond your existing Mac and internet connection.
How to get better image quality and lower input delay
- Use Ethernet whenever possible.
- If using Wi-Fi, connect to 5 GHz or a newer Wi-Fi network and reduce distance and obstructions between the Mac and router.
- Pause downloads, backups, video streams, and other heavy traffic.
- Disable a VPN temporarily when troubleshooting; corporate networks may also add routing or filtering problems.
- Start with 1080p/60 and match the stream to the display you actually use.
- Use the native app when a browser lacks a feature or handles keyboard, mouse, display, or fullscreen behavior poorly.
- Try playing at a different time if congestion or queueing is clearly peak-hour related.
- Plug in the Mac, close unnecessary applications, and use a stand for airflow.
A high-resolution Mac display can make a lower-resolution stream look soft. Adaptive compression can also make a stable stream temporarily blurry when the network cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Confirm that your membership supports the resolution you selected; advertised 4K, 5K, or high-frame-rate output is not guaranteed in every game or setup.

Common problems and first fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Long queue | Free-tier demand, peak hours, or regional capacity | Try off-peak hours or a paid tier; do not assume paid means zero waiting |
| Blurry image | Low bitrate, unstable Wi-Fi, display scaling, or a tier cap | Use Ethernet, close background traffic, then lower resolution |
| Input delay | High latency, Bluetooth interference, or network congestion | Use Ethernet and test a wired controller |
| Game missing | Unsupported title, launcher, edition, region, or publisher opt-out | Search the service catalog before buying or subscribing |
| Controller not detected | Pairing, firmware, browser, or launch order problem | Connect it before launching, re-pair it, update firmware, or try USB |
| Mac fan noise | Video decoding, browser/client load, or high stream settings | Plug in, close apps, improve airflow, and lower resolution |
When a Mac meets the requirements but still lags
- Stop downloads and video streams.
- Disable the VPN temporarily.
- Switch to Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Restart the router.
- Test at another time of day.
- Lower resolution or frame rate.
- Try the native app instead of the browser.
- If possible, try another service or data center.
When the controller connects but the game does not respond
Connect the controller before launching the stream, try USB instead of Bluetooth, update its firmware, remove and re-pair it in macOS Bluetooth settings, and test another supported controller. Browser permissions can also interfere with input. Keyboard and mouse may be preferable for some PC-style games, although competitive titles can remain sensitive to streaming latency and browser behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can any Mac play cloud games?
Many Macs can, including older Intel models, because the game runs remotely. GeForce NOW currently lists macOS 10.15 or later and Macs introduced in 2009 or later, but high resolutions, frame rates, HDR, heat, battery life, and browser or app support can still vary.
Do I need to buy games for GeForce NOW?
Often, yes. GeForce NOW commonly streams supported games that you own through a linked PC storefront. Its catalog count is not an all-inclusive subscription library, and ownership does not guarantee support.
Is Xbox Cloud Gaming available in Safari on Mac?
Xbox Cloud Gaming supports Mac browser access, including Safari, Chrome, and Microsoft Edge, subject to current regional, account, device, and browser requirements.
Will cloud gaming work over Wi-Fi?
It can, especially over a strong 5 GHz or newer Wi-Fi connection, but Ethernet is preferable. Latency, jitter, packet loss, congestion, and routing matter as much as download speed.
The Bottom Line
The simplest decision is: use GeForce NOW for supported PC games you already own, Xbox Cloud Gaming for an included Game Pass library, and Shadow PC when you need a complete Windows desktop. Before paying, verify the exact game, launcher, region, plan, and connection quality—and test at 1080p/60 before upgrading to a premium tier.
