Recommended Gothic play order
- Gothic (2001), or Gothic 1 Remake if you want the rebuilt version of the first story.
- Gothic II, with the Night of the Raven expansion included.
- Gothic 3, the third numbered game in the main series.
This order follows the story’s progression. THQ Nordic presents Gothic II as a continuation of the Nameless Hero’s story, while the remake retells the opening game rather than adding a new chapter. THQ Nordic’s Gothic 1 Remake page describes it as rebuilt while remaining faithful to the original’s story and atmosphere.
Which first game should you choose?
Play the original Gothic for the classic version
Choose Gothic (2001) if you want to experience the original release and its presentation before moving to the sequel. It is the start of the main storyline.
Choose Gothic 1 Remake for a rebuilt version of that story
Gothic 1 Remake is an alternative way to play the opening story, not a separate sequel to place between the original and Gothic II. THQ Nordic lists the remake for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and says it launched June 5, 2026. Platform, language, and edition availability can vary by territory, so check the actual store listing before buying. The publisher page also lists purchase options: Gothic 1 Remake.

How to buy Gothic II and Night of the Raven
For a newcomer, the straightforward choice is Gothic II Complete Classic, which bundles the base game with Night of the Raven. Treat the expansion as part of your Gothic II playthrough, not as a separate numbered sequel. The Complete Classic edition launched on PlayStation and Xbox on September 29, 2026, according to THQ Nordic’s launch announcement. Check your platform’s listing to confirm the edition and included content; availability and language options may differ by region.
What carries over between Gothic games?
From Gothic to Gothic II
Do not plan on importing your Gothic save, character build, or choices into Gothic II. A GOG community response says that nothing carries over and that Gothic II accounts for starting over at its opening. That is practical guidance rather than a platform-by-platform technical guarantee: the original Gothic manual documents saving and loading within the game, but does not document a cross-game import system. From Gothic II to Gothic 3, or from the remake to a classic game
Whether Gothic II progress transfers to Gothic 3, or whether remake saves can be imported into classic games, is not established by the available official information. Do not assume those transfers are supported; check documentation for the exact platform and edition you plan to play.

Continue to Gothic 3 after Gothic II if you want the third numbered entry. THQ Nordic announced console releases of the classic trilogy in 2026, including Gothic 3 Classic for Switch 2.
