The company announced ASUS Republic of Gamers and Lenovo as partners in April 2024, but Meta said in December 2025 it was focusing on first-party hardware and software. The proposed partner headsets are not established as products available to buy, and no restart date has been announced.
What Meta announced in 2024
On April 22, 2024, Meta said it would make the operating system behind Quest devices available to select third-party hardware makers under the name Meta Horizon OS. The proposal extended beyond software: Meta described an ecosystem that included the Horizon Store and its social layer. It was an initiative involving selected partners, not an unrestricted license for any company to make a Quest-compatible headset. Meta’s announcement
ASUS ROG: a performance gaming headset
ASUS Republic of Gamers was named to develop a performance-focused gaming headset using Meta Horizon OS. Meta’s announcement did not provide final specifications, a price, or a launch date.
Lenovo: mixed-reality devices
Lenovo was named for planned mixed-reality devices aimed at productivity, learning, and entertainment. The announcement did not establish final device specifications, pricing, or availability.

Why the planned partner headsets are not currently a buying option
On December 17, 2025, Road to VR reported Meta’s confirmation that it had paused the third-party headset program. An unnamed Meta spokesperson told the publication: “We have paused the program to focus on building the world-class first-party hardware and software needed to advance the VR market.” Road to VR’s report
That statement establishes a pause, not a permanent cancellation. The cited announcement and status report do not give a date for a possible restart. They also do not establish that the ASUS or Lenovo devices reached final design or production.

How the Xbox collaboration differs
Microsoft and Xbox were also part of Meta’s 2024 announcement, but the outcome was a special-edition version of Meta’s own headset—not a separately designed Xbox headset running Meta Horizon OS. Xbox Wire announced the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition on June 24, 2025. Xbox Wire’s announcement
| Device or plan | Intended use | Status established by the cited sources |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Meta Horizon OS headset | Performance gaming | Announced as a plan in April 2024; the third-party program was reported paused in December 2025. No final specifications or launch date are stated. |
| Lenovo Meta Horizon OS devices | Productivity, learning, and entertainment | Announced as a plan in April 2024; the third-party program was reported paused in December 2025. No final specifications or launch date are stated. |
| Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition | Xbox-themed version of a Meta Quest headset | Announced by Xbox Wire in June 2025 as a special-edition Meta Quest product, not an independent Xbox-designed headset. |
What this means for buyers and developers
For buyers, the ASUS and Lenovo announcements are not a basis for comparing prices, displays, comfort, or performance: the cited sources do not establish those details or confirm a shipping product. The Quest 3S Xbox Edition is a distinct Meta headset announcement, not evidence that the partner-headset program continued. For developers, Meta’s 2024 announcement described a possible expansion of the Horizon OS ecosystem, while the December 2025 pause means the cited sources do not establish a current path or timetable for third-party headset launches.
